In OBS, create a separate holding scene with a child-appropriate still image or short animation, alongside the scene that plays your loop. If playback fails or needs attention, switch the live program to the holding scene while you fix the video. OBS documents looping controls, but not a universal feature that detects every playback failure and switches scenes automatically, so plan to monitor the stream and switch scenes yourself.
Build a holding screen in OBS
1. Make the graphic
Design the image at your stream’s canvas dimensions so it fills the frame without stretching or cropping. Keep the message calm and easy to read, for example, “We’ll be right back,” alongside your channel name and a simple visual. Avoid alarming error language or asking children to leave the stream or take action elsewhere. These are practical design suggestions, not YouTube requirements.
2. Create a separate holding scene
- In OBS, add a new scene for the holding screen.
- Add the still image or local holding animation as a source. Resize and position it to fill the output canvas.
- Check the result in the preview. Make sure important text is readable and not too close to the edges.
- Keep this scene separate from the video scene so you can select it quickly when needed.
3. Configure the loop scene
For one local video file, use OBS Media Source and set its Loop option as needed. For a playlist, OBS VLC Video supports a playlist and a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed, and OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Check the playlist order and test the source with the actual media files. OBS also documents source visibility and playback-ending options; confirm the behavior you want rather than assuming every source handles the end of playback the same way. See the OBS Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022).
A persistent image source placed underneath the video can show through if the video source becomes hidden. It will not cover a frozen frame or a video that remains visible while malfunctioning. A separate holding scene is the more dependable choice when an operator needs to replace the picture viewers see.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Switch scenes safely when playback fails
- Rehearse privately or unlisted. Test a missing file, playback ending, or the failure most likely in your setup. Note what OBS actually displays and practice selecting the holding scene.
- Monitor the program output. When the video stops, shows an error, or needs attention, switch OBS’s active program scene to the holding scene. Do not assume an “show nothing when playback ends” option detects decoder problems, network problems, or every other fault; that setting concerns media playback ending.
- Check YouTube’s preview before going public. In the Live Control Room, inspect the preview before clicking Start Streaming, confirm the event’s accessibility, and keep monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube’s live streaming tips include the instruction: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- Verify any encoder failover. If you use a backup encoder, test the handoff before relying on it. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable during a test, then checking that the player switches to the backup.
Choose the OBS source that fits your video
| Decision | OBS Media Source | OBS VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | One local media file; includes a Loop setting. | A playlist of media items; includes Loop Playlist. |
| Dependency | Built into OBS’s documented source list. | Requires VLC. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| What to test | Loop and playback-ending behavior with the actual file. | Playlist order, looping, and visibility behavior with the actual files. |
Both sources’ controls are documented by the OBS Project. Neither the presence of a holding scene nor a playback-ending option establishes automatic scene switching for every kind of failure.
Set the audience accurately for children’s content
Set the live stream’s audience based on the actual content, not on the holding screen. YouTube asks creators to designate whether a live stream is Made for Kids; Live Control Room is where that audience setting is made. YouTube’s factors include subject matter, intended or actual audience, child actors, characters or toys that appeal to children, language, activities, children’s songs or stories, and other evidence about the audience. A child appearing in a video does not by itself settle the designation.

For streams marked Made for Kids, YouTube restricts features including live chat and personalized advertising. The designation does not automatically place a video in the YouTube Kids app. Review YouTube’s guidance for determining whether content is Made for Kids and its information about features restricted on Made for Kids content. Troubleshoot common failures
- The file ends instead of looping: Check Media Source’s Loop and playback-end settings, or VLC Video’s Loop Playlist setting, depending on the source. Retest with the actual file or playlist.
- The picture or audio is poor: Check encoder status and CPU load. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance identifies encoder errors and CPU load as things to inspect.
- The holding scene appears in OBS but not to viewers: Confirm the active program scene, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- A backup encoder does not take over: Test failover before relying on it. YouTube recommends checking that the player rolls to the backup after the primary encoder is stopped or disconnected.
- The channel has a live-stream restriction: Follow YouTube’s restriction rather than trying to evade it by streaming through another channel. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the broader goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube loop running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.
