An old laptop can cost less if its measured power use is modest, your electricity is affordable, and your home power and internet are dependable. A VPS moves the sending machine off-site, but its rent is only part of the cost: you also need enough outbound data, suitable capacity, and time to administer it. Compare your actual laptop draw and tariff with the full terms of a specific VPS plan before deciding.
How to compare the real monthly cost
Use the same streaming hours and stream profile for both options. For the laptop, calculate electricity from its measured average draw while running the intended stream:
Electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity tariff per kWh.
For a monthly estimate, use the hours in the billing period you are evaluating and your actual tariff. A plug-in watt meter can help measure the laptop under the intended workload. Do not substitute a guessed wattage: power use varies by laptop, condition, settings, and workload.

For a VPS, add the recurring plan price to any outbound-transfer overage and optional charges such as storage, backups, monitoring, or software. Check whether the provider throttles or suspends service when you exceed a quota. An advertised entry price alone does not show that a plan can carry your continuous stream.
What each option depends on

Neither setup guarantees a continuous stream. The laptop may have a low incremental cost if it is already owned and draws little power, but a dependable connection and someone able to respond to failures still matter. A VPS avoids relying on your home connection, while adding server administration and possible transfer charges.

Choose a YouTube stream profile before pricing data
Bitrate and operating time determine how much data the sender transmits, so estimate transfer needs using the profile you actually plan to stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for your available upload connection, testing upload bitrate, testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitoring stream health. It recommends RTMPS.
For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as a recommended bitrate for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 720p30. These are profile-specific recommendations, not a requirement that every music stream use either setting; YouTube lists different values for other profiles and codecs. Test the intended setup rather than assuming your home connection or VPS quota will be sufficient.

A practical decision process
- Measure the laptop. Run the intended streaming setup and measure its average draw, ideally with a plug-in watt meter. Use the result in watts, not the laptop’s power-adapter rating.
- Calculate home electricity. Multiply watts ÷ 1,000 by the hours in your billing period and your local price per kWh.
- Set the stream profile. Choose a YouTube-supported quality and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. Test with representative audio and movement, then check stream health.
- Get the VPS terms in writing. Check the actual plan’s rent, outbound-transfer quota, overage charges, throttling or suspension rules, server capability, and fees for storage, backup, monitoring, or software.
- Compare operational effort and risk. Decide whether you prefer home equipment and broadband dependencies or server administration and provider-plan limits. Include the time and ability needed to monitor and recover the stream.
- Confirm rights and archive expectations. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the music, and do not assume a single continuous stream will produce a complete replay.
Music rights and YouTube archiving apply to both
Changing the encoder from a laptop to a VPS does not change the rights required. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Confirm that your rights cover the intended use and territories before streaming.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its archive guidance warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat a 24/7 stream as a live broadcast, not as a guaranteed complete archived replay; make a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
