Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallNeither Oracle Cloud nor Google Cloud is the universal winner for an always-on YouTube stream. Google Cloud documents free VM data transfer to YouTube for qualifying traffic, while Oracle Cloud’s Always Free resources include a monthly outbound-data allowance. But neither fact alone establishes the cheaper or more reliable setup: the VM, disk, region, sustained network capacity, encoder workload, and free-tier conditions all matter.
If you want to manage your own encoder, compare specific VM configurations and test them on your route to YouTube. If you want an always-on stream without keeping a computer or VM running yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube, with one flat price per slot for quality up to 4K 60fps and a free first day. Oracle Cloud vs Google Cloud at a glance
| What matters | Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) | Google Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to YouTube | Always Free resources include 10 TB per month of outbound data. This allowance is not proof that a particular VM can sustain a stream. | VM data transfer to specified Google products, including YouTube, is uncharged under the documented rule, whether the VM uses an internal or external IP address. Other transfer categories have separate pricing; this is not a blanket free-egress policy. |
| Free compute | Always Free includes up to two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances, or the VM.Standard.A1.Flex allowance totaling two OCPUs and 12 GB of memory equivalent. Free compute must be created in the tenancy’s home region; availability and allocation limits apply. | No directly comparable free-compute allowance is established here. Check the current pricing and account terms for the region and machine type you intend to use. |
| Published network figures | The Always Free page lists up to 50 Mbps internet bandwidth for E2.1.Micro. OCI’s first-instance tutorial shows 1 Gbps for a sample one-OCPU A1 setup; this is a sample, not a guarantee for every account, region, or route. | Maximum VM egress depends on machine type and conditions. Published standard maxima range from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps, with applicable Tier_1 cases up to 200 Gbps. These are machine-specific limits, not sustained-throughput promises. |
| What you operate | A general-purpose VM can run your chosen encoder; you manage the VM, software, stream source, and recovery process. | A general-purpose VM can also run your chosen encoder. Google’s Live Stream API is a separate managed encoding service, not simply a VM, and has its own active-channel and resolution-based charges. |
| Key free-tier caveat | OCI may reclaim idle Always Free compute when its documented seven-day utilization conditions are met. Review those conditions and check current tenancy limits and capacity in the console. | The cited YouTube transfer exception does not settle VM, disk, or other network costs. Review the selected machine type’s limits and current regional pricing. |
Provider documentation supports these distinctions, but does not establish a like-for-like paid monthly total or an independent Oracle-versus-Google throughput benchmark. Don’t read a published bandwidth maximum as a measured result for your stream.
Which cloud should you choose?
Choose Google Cloud when YouTube transfer billing is central
Google Cloud’s documented VM-to-YouTube transfer rule can make it attractive when most of the VM’s outgoing stream traffic goes to a qualifying YouTube destination. Confirm that your actual traffic qualifies and calculate compute and disk costs for your region. The exception does not make all VM egress free.

Consider OCI when its free resources fit your design
OCI’s Always Free allowance includes outbound data and specified compute resources, which may suit a small stream if the selected shape can encode and deliver it reliably. Check whether the instance is available in your home region, whether you can allocate it, and whether its network capacity meets your needs. For E2.1.Micro, the published internet-bandwidth figure is up to 50 Mbps. A1 bandwidth scales with OCPUs; a tutorial’s sample setting should not be treated as a general service guarantee.
Don’t choose from egress pricing alone
For a fair comparison, price the complete setup in the regions you would actually use: VM shape, disk, expected transfer categories, and any applicable discounts. Then account for whether the source and encoder can run on the VM, the stream’s sustained network and processing needs, free-tier eligibility, quotas, and idle-resource policies. Without those inputs, a precise monthly total or a universal cheapest-provider claim would be misleading.

What an always-on YouTube VM has to do
A self-managed setup keeps a video source and encoder running on the VM and sends the encoded feed to YouTube. You are responsible for provisioning the VM, installing and configuring the software, keeping the source available, protecting credentials, monitoring the stream, and recovering it when either the VM or YouTube connection fails.
- Encoding capacity: confirm the chosen VM can encode your video at the intended resolution and frame rate, or that your workflow can send a suitably encoded source without overloading it.
- Network capacity: allow for the stream’s bitrate and verify sustained performance on the actual route. Provider maxima describe limits for applicable configurations, not a guaranteed YouTube ingest rate.
- Persistence and recovery: plan what happens if the process stops, the VM restarts, the source ends, or YouTube drops the connection. A VM does not by itself ensure the stream restarts.
- Storage: include disk costs and capacity for any local recordings, media, or software your workflow requires.
- Access security: treat the YouTube stream key as a credential. Limit who can read it and avoid exposing it in logs, public code, or shared configuration.
Configure YouTube’s encoder connection
YouTube accepts live encoder feeds over RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed four seconds. Use settings compatible with your specific encoder and the stream you intend to send.

- Create or open the YouTube live stream: in YouTube’s live-stream setup flow, obtain the live server URL and stream key for the event or persistent stream.
- Configure your encoder: enter the server URL and stream key, choose RTMPS where supported, and set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the target resolution rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
- Run a representative preflight: test with the actual source, including representative audio and motion. Check that the encoder is sending and that YouTube reports healthy stream reception before relying on it.
- Monitor while live: watch YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder or VM for interruptions, resource pressure, or a stopped source. Keep a recovery plan for a dropped connection or process.
YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder and note that streams can be archived. Archiving does not replace your own source and storage plan; decide what you need to retain and where.
Google’s managed Live Stream API is a different option
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed encoding and streaming product, not the same cost model as renting a general-purpose VM and running your own encoder. Its pricing is based on active-channel duration and configured input and output resolution; a channel can be active even when no input stream is arriving. Consider it only if managed live encoding fits the workflow, and price it separately from VM hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a YouTube live stream from an Oracle or Google Cloud VM?
Yes. A VM can run an encoder that sends a feed to YouTube using its server URL and stream key. You remain responsible for the source, encoder, VM operations, monitoring, and recovery.
Does Google Cloud make all outgoing VM traffic free?
No. The documented no-charge rule applies to VM data transfer to specified Google products including YouTube; other transfer categories have separate pricing.
Is OCI’s 10 TB outbound allowance enough to prove an always-on setup will work?
No. It is a transfer allowance, not a guarantee of a VM’s sustained network capacity, encoding performance, eligibility, or availability.
