Recovery is possible only if relevant configuration, media, or a backup still exists. YouTube or OBS cannot recreate a playlist whose only copy and source data are gone. If the stream is still running, preserve its current state before changing anything.
Identify what is missing
“Playlist” can refer to different things, and each has a different recovery path. Start by locating where the missing item was created and used.

YouTube’s playlist help notes that after deletion, a playlist’s URL and title stop appearing or being searchable in Analytics, although it may still appear in viewers’ watch histories. That history is not a documented restore mechanism.
Protect the stream and configuration before editing
If the live stream is still running, avoid reloading, stopping, or changing its active source until you have recorded what is currently working. This is cautious troubleshooting practice, not a recovery step promised by YouTube or OBS.

- Record the active YouTube stream details and the source or scene currently feeding it.
- Export or otherwise preserve any surviving OBS scene collection before making edits. OBS describes collections as saving scenes and sources and supporting import and export: OBS Scene Collections.
- Preserve the OBS profile or other output settings separately. Scene collections do not include those settings.
- Keep an untouched copy of any remaining playlist file, configuration export, or media folder before attempting repairs.
Inspect OBS sources and search for surviving copies
In the scene collection used by the stream, inspect the source type and the paths it references. OBS distinguishes a single-file Media Source from VLC Video, which can contain multiple media items and loop the playlist. Consult the source settings documented by OBS: Media Sources.
- If a VLC Video source remains, inspect its configured entries. They may reveal some or all of the list still held in OBS.
- If the scene collection remains, it may preserve useful source setup, but OBS does not guarantee that it contains the complete contents of a separate playlist file or the media files themselves.
- Search only places where you may already have stored copies: recycle or trash, backups, synced-folder version history, exported scene collections, and older machines.
- If you used a third-party playlist source, its settings may be exposed in scene-collection JSON, depending on the plugin and version. The optional Media Playlist Source plugin is not an official OBS recovery tool and cannot bring back data that no longer exists.
The official documentation does not specify a guaranteed Windows, macOS, or Linux location for a missing external playlist file, nor a universal procedure to restore one. The right search depends on the software, operating system, source type, and whether another copy exists.

Use archives for what they can—and cannot—provide
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube Help recommends, “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” See Archive live streams.
An available archive may give you a recording to consult while rebuilding. The cited YouTube guidance does not say that an archive restores an encoder’s playlist, source configuration, or complete 24-hour history. DVR is not a substitute: YouTube says viewers cannot seek back to before the stream went live, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Rebuild the list and resume carefully
If no playlist copy survives, rebuild it from reliable records or recollection. Use only media you can access and have the rights to stream.
- Gather the available media and make a written inventory of the intended story order and any transitions or breaks.
- Recreate the list in the source type you use. In OBS, a VLC Video source can contain multiple items and loop; check its playlist and loop settings against the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Test playback and loop behavior locally. Check the beginning, end, and transition back to the start, and confirm that every referenced file is present and plays as expected.
- Verify copyright and permissions before returning to continuous streaming. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate a stream. If content is licensed, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel. See Copyright issues with live streams.
- When ready, use the correct YouTube stream settings. YouTube supports reusing previous stream settings and resetting a stream key in Live Control Room: Manage live stream settings. Treat the stream key as secret; YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address.
Prevent the next playlist loss
Keep independent, current copies of the playlist or source configuration and the media it references. A backup is most useful when it is stored separately from the streaming machine and you periodically verify that it opens and the files still resolve. Record what source type and software version the stream uses so you can rebuild it if needed.

- Export and retain OBS scene collections, plus the separate output profile or settings.
- Keep the playlist file and source media in a backed-up location, with another copy apart from the streaming computer.
- Maintain a plain-text source list with filenames, order, and rights or license notes.
- Make a local recording when practical. YouTube specifically recommends a local archive as a backup, but that recording is not a playlist restore feature.
