VRAM is the fast memory on a graphics card that holds data the GPU needs to render images. There is no universal VRAM minimum for streaming with OBS: the amount you need depends chiefly on whether you are gaming on the streaming PC, plus the game, resolution, graphics settings, OBS scenes and other GPU workloads. A hardware encoder can handle video encoding, but OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite its scenes.
What VRAM does
Video RAM, or VRAM, is high-speed memory on or associated with a graphics card. It gives the GPU quick access to graphics data used to render and display images. That data can include textures, shaders and other assets. NVIDIA and AMD describe VRAM in these terms.
Capacity is only one part of a graphics card’s capabilities. More VRAM does not, by itself, mean a faster GPU or guarantee a smooth stream. GPU rendering performance, the workload and available headroom matter too.
How much VRAM do you need to stream?
OBS does not publish a minimum VRAM capacity in its basic system requirements. The requirements identify operating-system and graphics-API compatibility, and OBS cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. There is therefore no evidence-based, one-size-fits-all VRAM number for OBS streaming.

If you stream a camera or video
For a stream built around camera or video sources, the relevant GPU workload depends on the output resolution, capture sources, effects and scene composition. A simpler scene may demand less rendering work than one with multiple sources and filters, but OBS still has to render and composite its scenes.
If you stream games from the same PC
The game is usually the more demanding part of the VRAM decision. The game and OBS need GPU resources at the same time; higher resolutions, detailed textures and demanding graphics settings can increase the game’s memory use. OBS says GPU overload can affect performance and recommends reducing GPU workload as a troubleshooting measure. That supports evaluating the whole workload, not assigning a fixed streaming threshold.

AMD provides one example of why workload and conditions matter: its page lists the Radeon RX 7700 XT with 12 GB of video memory for a 1440p gaming target. Separately, AMD reports peak VRAM use of 11.7 GB in its Far Cry 6 test on a 12 GB Radeon RX 6750 XT at native 1440p, maximum settings and high ray tracing. These are AMD gaming guidance and a vendor test under stated conditions—not OBS recommendations or universal requirements for games or streams.
Why a hardware encoder does not remove the GPU workload
Hardware encoding moves video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized hardware component when the encoder is supported. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide covers NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync Video, with compatibility conditions that vary by hardware and software.

Encoding is not the same job as rendering and compositing OBS scenes. Using a hardware encoder can offload encoding, but it does not make OBS stop using GPU resources for scene rendering. A game can still leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to render reliably.
Codec and platform compatibility also matter when choosing an encoder. NVIDIA’s guide, dated January 30, 2025, recommends H.264 NVENC for Twitch and suggests AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs, or HEVC otherwise. Those are NVIDIA’s recommendations at that date, not permanent rules; check current platform support and your GPU’s compatibility before choosing a codec.

How to choose a GPU for gaming and streaming
Compare the whole system workload rather than buying on VRAM capacity alone. Use these factors to narrow your options:
- Game, resolution and settings: Decide which games, resolution and detail levels you want to run. Texture and ray-tracing demands can affect memory use.
- GPU performance and VRAM together: Capacity does not describe rendering speed. Consider whether the GPU can handle the game while leaving resources for OBS.
- OBS workload: Count the scene’s capture sources and filters, and account for other applications using the GPU.
- Encoder and codec support: Check which hardware encoder your GPU supports and whether the destination platform supports the codec you plan to use.
- Headroom: Avoid planning for a GPU that is fully occupied by the game; OBS and other active applications need capacity too.
A 12 GB graphics card is not an OBS requirement. AMD’s RX 7700 XT example is guidance for a 1440p gaming target, while the Far Cry 6 figure is one test with defined settings. Neither establishes how much VRAM every streamer needs.

Troubleshoot GPU overload in OBS
If OBS struggles while a game is running, its encoding performance troubleshooting guide identifies GPU overload as a possible cause: OBS needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes, and the game can consume too much of the available capacity.
- Reduce the game’s GPU workload: Lower graphics settings or the game’s frame rate to leave more capacity for OBS.
- Review the OBS scene: Simplify the scene or reduce GPU-intensive sources and filters if they are not essential.
- Check concurrent applications: Close or limit other applications that are using the GPU while you stream.
- Reassess the full workload: If the problem persists, reconsider the game settings, output resolution, GPU performance and available VRAM together. Switching to a hardware encoder alone does not eliminate OBS scene rendering.
