Cloud GPU vs CPU VPS Cost for Encoding a Prerecorded YouTube Stream

A GPU can encode faster without costing less overall. Compare the exact workload, output quality, runtime and full cloud bill before choosing a GPU instance or CPU VPS.

There is no universal cost winner. A GPU instance may encode more quickly, but the meaningful comparison is the total cost to send the exact stream you need—not the server’s hourly rate alone. Test the same source video, output settings and FFmpeg workflow on each candidate, then include storage, network transfer and idle runtime in the bill.

First, decide what the server actually needs to do

For a prerecorded YouTube stream, the server reads a video file and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. That is separate from YouTube’s processing after it receives the feed: YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers. Unless your production specifically needs to create multiple renditions before ingest, do not price a server on the assumption that it must generate a full resolution ladder.

This distinction changes the comparison. An instance that can encode several simultaneous renditions may be valuable for a multi-output workflow, but that benchmark does not establish its value for sending one live feed from one prerecorded file.

What the published AWS benchmark does—and does not—show

AWS’s January 4, 2024 Compute Blog comparison used FFmpeg 6.0 and compared CPU x264/x265 encoding with NVIDIA NVENC for H.264 and H.265. In its live-streaming scenario, AWS tested outputs at 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p and 160p. AWS reported that a g4dn.xlarge sustained up to four parallel encodings from 4K to that output set, while CPU instances sustained at most one parallel stream in the tested configuration. Those results describe AWS’s benchmark workload and settings; they are not a performance estimate for your file or for one simple YouTube feed. Read the AWS benchmark.

The same article gave example hourly figures of $0.587 for g4dn.xlarge and $2.1888 for c6i.12xlarge. Those are benchmark-era examples published in 2024, not current quotes, and the CPU instance in that comparison could nearly sustain three simultaneous streams. Do not use either figure as a current regional rate or as the cost of completing a particular video.

When a GPU may be worth paying for

  • You need multiple concurrent encodes or renditions, and the GPU’s added throughput reduces total runtime enough to offset its instance cost.
  • Your particular FFmpeg pipeline can use the available GPU encoder and decoder effectively.
  • The GPU output meets your required visual quality at the chosen codec and bitrate.

When a CPU VPS may be the better fit

  • You need only one outgoing feed and the CPU can sustain it at real-time pace.
  • You prefer software encoding for the quality or file-size characteristics required by the production.
  • GPU support, drivers or accelerated FFmpeg setup would add effort or failure points without reducing your total bill.

Hardware encoding is not automatically a quality-equivalent replacement for software encoding. AWS itself frames the choice as workload-dependent and notes that CPU encoding can suit cases where output file size is critical. For a GPU path, NVIDIA documents using NVENC to encode and NVDEC to decode, including GPU-side scaling examples; compatible hardware, drivers and an FFmpeg build with NVIDIA acceleration enabled are prerequisites. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guidance.

Calculate cost per streamed hour, not just instance-hour price

  1. Choose the exact workload. Use the same source file and duration, codec, resolution, frame rate, target quality or bitrate, audio, FFmpeg version and filters on each candidate.
  2. Record current rates for your region. Check the intended instance type, operating system and pricing model at the time you will run it. Cloud rates vary with region and configuration; AWS notes that some charges, such as EBS optimization or data transfer, can be additional. Check AWS EC2 pricing details.
  3. Measure runtime and real-time headroom. Record how long it takes to produce the required output, or verify that an ongoing encode stays ahead of the live playback clock. If the task is continuous streaming, include all hours the machine must remain on, not only the time spent actively encoding.
  4. Compute comparable totals. For a completed encode, calculate hourly instance price × encode runtime. Normalize to the cost per completed source-video hour. For a live feed, calculate the full compute cost for the scheduled streamed hours and express it per streamed hour.
  5. Add the rest of the bill. Include storage for source media and outputs, network transfer, any relevant attached-storage charges, and idle time. A short scheduled encode and a 24/7 machine can have very different economics even at the same nominal hourly rate.
  6. Compare acceptable outputs, not merely speed. Check that both machines meet the same visual-quality target and stability requirement. A fast encode that fails your quality standard is not a saving.

AWS also offers VT1 video-transcoding instances. Its product page advertises up to 30% lower cost per stream than selected G4dn instances and up to 60% lower than selected C5 instances for its stated live video-encoding scenarios. Those are AWS vendor claims for the scenarios it describes, not guaranteed savings for a single prerecorded YouTube stream. Treat VT1 as another candidate to evaluate when the workload is video-heavy, not as an assumed winner. See AWS VT1 instance details.

Run a fair test before choosing

  1. Use representative footage. Select a movement-rich portion of the source as well as a typical section; motion can expose quality or throughput differences that a static scene hides.
  2. Hold settings constant. Keep codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, target quality or bitrate, filters and FFmpeg version the same wherever the hardware permits.
  3. Check hardware acceleration actually works. For NVIDIA, confirm the instance, drivers and FFmpeg build support the intended NVENC/NVDEC path. If the job silently falls back to software, the measured result is not a GPU-encoding comparison.
  4. Verify live pacing and stability. Confirm the outgoing feed can run at real-time pace without dropped frames, then monitor stream health during a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event and allowing upload-bitrate headroom.
  5. Compare the complete schedule cost. Apply current regional rates and include storage, transfer and the hours the machine must stay available. Recalculate if you change the region, instance, price model or schedule.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. Check the current settings for the chosen output rather than assuming your source file’s properties are the required ingest settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Configure the YouTube feed and account for platform rules

In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then configure the encoder to send the feed to that destination. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings for protocol and output parameters, and watch the stream-health indicators during the test.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your planned prerecorded broadcast runs longer, do not assume it will be archived in full; plan your own recording or split the schedule if an archive matters. A prerecorded file still has to comply with YouTube’s copyright and other platform rules. Possessing a copy of music or video does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it, and repetitive or reused material can raise separate channel-monetization concerns. Check rights for every audio and video element and YouTube’s applicable policies before scheduling a long loop.

YouTube’s verified-encoder listing describes AJA’s PlayToStream function as supporting scheduled prerecorded media sent directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That demonstrates another possible workflow; it does not establish that the hardware is an economical choice for a cloud-versus-VPS comparison. See YouTube’s verified encoder information.

Common cost and setup mistakes

  • Choosing by hourly price alone: a cheaper machine may take longer, while a faster machine may spend more time idle. Compare total scheduled cost per streamed hour or completed source-video hour.
  • Comparing unlike encodes: different codecs, quality targets, filters or frame rates can make one output faster or smaller without making it equivalent. Align the settings and inspect output quality.
  • Assuming one multi-rendition benchmark predicts one-feed performance: the AWS result was for a particular parallel live-encoding workload. Test your own one-feed workflow.
  • Forgetting downstream transcoding: YouTube transcodes the received live stream for viewers. Add server-side rendition encoding only if the production requires it.
  • Ignoring ancillary charges or uptime: storage, transfer and always-on hours may outweigh encode time. Check the provider’s current pricing for your region and configuration.
  • Misconfiguring ingest: an incorrect stream URL/key, unsupported encoder settings, or inadequate upload headroom can prevent a stable feed. Recheck the Live Control Room destination, current YouTube settings and stream-health status.
  • Assuming accelerated encoding is active: missing drivers or an incompatible FFmpeg build can prevent use of NVENC/NVDEC. Validate the actual encoder path before treating a run as GPU performance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining your own GPU instance or CPU VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer can stay off. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
