There is no universal winner: compare a VPS’s monthly bill with your desktop’s measured electricity use at your local power rate, then check whether either option can sustain the stream settings and stay connected. Akamai’s North America pricing page lists a 1 GB Nanode at $5 per month, but that price alone does not show that the plan can encode your workload. A desktop’s electricity cost cannot be calculated honestly without its wall-power draw and your tariff.
How to compare the monthly cost
Use the same operating period for both options. The example below uses a 30-day month, or 720 hours, of continuous operation. It compares recurring costs only; add any incremental internet, hardware, storage, or monitoring costs that actually apply to your setup.

Akamai’s North America pricing page lists its Nanode 1 GB at $5 per month or $0.0075 per hour, with 1 GB RAM, one CPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. Prices and plan availability can differ by region, so check the current price for the region you would select. The listed transfer allowance is not a guarantee that every traffic pattern is free of additional charges; confirm current billing terms and any services beyond the instance. Desktop electricity cost
Measure the desktop at the wall while it runs the intended stream, rather than estimating from its power supply’s rating or component specifications. If the draw varies, use a representative average that includes the encoder, media playback, and other equipment included in the measurement. Then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour. U.S. readers can consult the EIA’s state and sector price tables, but should use the rate applicable to their own account; readers elsewhere should use their local tariff. For a 30-day month, the formula is: monthly kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720; electricity cost = monthly kWh × local price per kWh. A plug-in electricity monitor can help establish wall draw, but it is a measurement aid, not a required purchase.
Calculate your break-even draw
To find the desktop power draw at which electricity alone equals a particular VPS bill, use: break-even watts = VPS monthly price ÷ (720 × electricity price per kWh) × 1,000. Insert the VPS price for your chosen region and your own electricity rate. This compares electricity with the instance bill only; it does not price your time, internet service, backup equipment, or reliability needs.

Is a low-cost VPS suitable for continuous encoding?
Not necessarily. The North America Nanode listing establishes its price and specifications, not its ability to encode a particular stream smoothly. Akamai describes shared CPU as burstable and says sustained average CPU use should stay below 80%, including virtualization overhead; it also notes that other customers’ workloads can affect performance. Benchmark the actual stream at its intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate before depending on a small shared-CPU instance. Akamai TechDocs: Choose a compute plan
A pre-rendered, mostly static feed may demand less encoding work than live motion, but actual resource use depends on the encoder and settings. If CPU use stays high, the stream drops frames, or the VPS struggles to maintain its bitrate, test a more capable instance or a hardware encoder rather than assuming the lowest price is adequate.

Check the stream settings and network before deciding
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates vary with resolution and frame rate. Its current encoder guidance also lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, and CBR among supported settings. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams, and advises using a reliable connection. That requirement applies to the connection sending the stream: compare a VPS’s available networking and transfer allowance with the desktop’s home upload capacity and reliability, not just their compute costs. Reliability, recovery, and archive planning
A desktop depends on household power, the home internet connection, and the computer remaining operational. A VPS avoids the household connection and power supply as the stream’s hosting environment, but still requires monitoring and a way to restart or supervise the streaming process if it fails. Plan for reconnect behavior, process supervision, monitoring, and backup media; neither choice should be treated as self-recovering unless you have configured and verified that behavior.
YouTube warns that a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and recommends keeping a local archive backup. If the recording matters, plan separate sessions or a recording workflow rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive. Which option makes sense?
- Choose a VPS when the stream workload fits the instance, its network and transfer terms meet your needs, and avoiding reliance on a home computer or connection is worth the recurring bill.
- Choose the spare desktop when it can encode reliably, your measured electricity cost is favorable, and its home power and upload connection meet YouTube’s requirements. Count incremental costs only if the stream causes them.
- Test before committing when encoding settings are demanding or the stream must remain available. A short representative run can reveal CPU pressure, upload limitations, and reconnect problems that a price comparison cannot.
