For continuous operation over 30 days, each average watt uses 0.72 kWh: a hypothetical 10 W setup would use 7.2 kWh, but that is an arithmetic example—not a measured or typical Chromebook result. The electricity bill is only one part of the decision: an old Chromebook running Linux may not reliably encode a nonstop stream, and a single 24-hour broadcast raises an archive issue.
Calculate the electricity cost from your own Chromebook
Use this formula:
Electricity cost = average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh
The result of watts × hours ÷ 1,000 is the energy used in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The U.S. Department of Energy explains the calculation and describes measuring consumption with a meter: Energy Efficiency at Home — An Interdisciplinary Module for Energy Education.
Measure the complete setup
For a useful estimate, measure the Chromebook together with its charger and any accessories that will stay on. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure energy use at the outlet; it is optional, but more reliable than estimating from a charger label. A charger’s maximum wattage is not the Chromebook’s actual running draw.

Measure while the Chromebook is doing the kind of streaming work you expect it to do, and use its average watts in the formula. Multiply by your local electricity price per kWh. The result covers electricity only—not internet service, equipment purchase costs, or any service fees.
Convert continuous use to a month or year
| Period | Energy per average watt | Example at a hypothetical 10 W |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days, running 24 hours a day | 0.72 kWh | 7.2 kWh |
| 365 days, running 24 hours a day | 8.76 kWh | 87.6 kWh |
Multiply the energy figure for your measured wattage by your electricity rate to get the cost. For example, the 10 W column is only an illustration of the arithmetic; it does not describe a typical or tested Chromebook.

Can an old Chromebook running Linux stream 24/7?
It depends on the Chromebook, Linux setup, stream settings, and connection. There is no basis for promising that an unspecified old model will encode a stable stream continuously.
Which Linux environment are you using?
Google’s Chromebook Linux development environment is a Debian environment for development tools. Google documents that hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, is not supported in that environment. That limitation may matter for video workloads, and an old Chromebook’s exact capabilities still depend on its model. See Google’s guide to setting up Linux on a Chromebook.

OBS requirements are not a guarantee of streaming performance
OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland among its Linux requirements, but meeting its basic requirements does not establish that a particular device can stream reliably. CPU demand varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The OBS requirements page is dated August 25, 2021: OBS System Requirements.
If you want to try local streaming, test the exact Chromebook, Linux environment, content, and settings before relying on it. A machine that can open OBS or begin a stream has not necessarily demonstrated it can stay stable around the clock.

Choose YouTube settings and test before going live
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265, or AV1 ingest and recommends RTMP/RTMPS with constant bitrate encoding. Its H.264 recommendations include the following examples:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended settings, not proof that an old Chromebook can encode them. Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce the encoding and upload burden, but stability still depends on the device and connection. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance when choosing settings.

Run a representative test
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate you intend to use.
- Test with content that has audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators during the test and check for dropped frames, interruptions, or audio problems.
- Repeat for long enough to reveal heat, performance, or connection problems that a brief start-up check would miss. A short successful test does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
YouTube’s setup and testing guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan separately for a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a broadcast longer than 12 hours, so do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce a complete video-on-demand archive. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions and verify the current behavior in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it. The same YouTube encoder guide covers the archive statement: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Compare local streaming with a cloud option
The right choice depends on what you are streaming. A Chromebook running OBS is a local encoding setup; it may suit a supported workload after testing, but it uses the device and connection at home. A cloud service for prerecorded video is a different approach: YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. The listing does not establish its current price or terms: YouTube’s encoder directory and setup guide.
For a fair cost comparison, include measured local electricity use and your own electricity rate, then compare any verified service charges. Also weigh encoding capability, upload reliability, whether the stream is live camera or screen content versus prerecorded video, and archive needs. Without measured watts, a local tariff, and confirmed service pricing, it is not possible to say which option costs less.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos that you want to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo and its plans. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
