The strongest choice depends first on the bug’s damage strengths and weaknesses, then on whether you can safely use melee or need range, how the weapon’s attacks flow, and which upgrades you have unlocked. Obsidian’s combat update gives a concrete example: a hammer can deal extra damage to a ladybug compared with a spear. Choose for the matchup, not a universal tier list.
How to choose the right weapon
Start with the creature you are fighting. Obsidian says bugs have innate strengths and weaknesses to damage types, making damage matchup a primary consideration. A weapon that is powerful in one encounter may be a poor pick in another. See Obsidian’s weapon and combat update.
- Match damage to the enemy. Use the game’s creature information and your available weapon options to decide whether a different damage type is worth more than sticking with your most-upgraded weapon.
- Consider the space and danger. Melee requires you to close in; a bow or crossbow lets you attack from a distance, which can be useful when approaching a creature is risky.
- Pick a rhythm you can use reliably. Melee combos, charged bow shots, and crossbow shots ask for different timing. A theoretical damage advantage is less useful if the attack pattern does not suit the fight.
- Account for effects and upgrades. Weapon effects and upgrade paths can change the value of a weapon, so compare the item as you have it built—not just its name or category.
Which weapon type should you use?
The following handling notes come from the community-maintained Grounded Wiki weapons reference, crawled roughly four months before October 3, 2026. Its currency is unclear, so treat the details as a guide to weapon feel rather than a guaranteed description of every current patch.
| Weapon type | Documented handling | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Melee weapons | Most use a three-hit sequence. | Choose one when you can safely stay close and its damage type suits the target. |
| Daggers | Use a two-hit sequence. | Consider one if its matchup and effects fit your build; do not assume its shorter sequence makes it the best overall. |
| Standard bows | Reward charged shots. | Useful when you want ranged attacks and can take time to charge. |
| Crossbows | Cannot be charged. | Consider one if its ranged attack rhythm works better for you than charging bow shots. |
What should you upgrade first?
Upgrade the weapon you can use effectively against the creatures you expect to fight, rather than investing solely because a weapon appears high in a tier list. An upgrade improves the usefulness of a weapon you already rely on, but it does not remove a damage-type mismatch.

Obsidian’s official combat update describes the Smithing Station and an early progression in which Quartzite Shards upgrade weapons up to +5, followed by Upgrade Globs for Mighty or elemental paths. The update’s weapon-system notes explain the system. In its Grounded 1.0 release notes, Obsidian says Quartzite and Marble replaced earlier resource names and are processed into whetstones and armor plating; it also documents Supreme materials for upgrades to +9. These are historical official descriptions, not a complete current upgrade-cost chart. See the Grounded 1.0 release notes.
- Early progression: Improve a weapon that covers a useful matchup and that you are comfortable using.
- When choosing an upgrade path: Consider whether Mighty damage or an elemental augment better serves the targets you face; the available sources do not establish one universally superior path.
- Later progression: Supreme materials make +9 upgrades possible according to the 1.0 notes. That raises the ceiling for upgraded weapons, but does not identify a single weapon as the best investment.
Why a fixed weapon tier list can mislead
Weapon performance is sensitive to game version. Obsidian’s Update 0.12 notes changed the three-hit combo sequence to 50 → 100 → 150, with the finisher dealing the most damage. The notes say, “Overall DPS of a full combo is the same.” That is a statement about the combo change in Update 0.12, not proof of current balance across all weapons. The community reference gives a different general sequence, 100% → 100% → 125%, which illustrates why exact combo figures should not be treated as timeless. Read Obsidian’s Update 0.12 notes in their update context.

The available official notes explain damage matching and upgrade progression, but they do not provide a complete, current head-to-head ranking across every weapon, creature, difficulty, and build. Without that comparison, a numeric “best weapons” ranking would overstate what is established. Use matchup, range, attack rhythm, effects, and upgrade stage to make the choice for the fight in front of you.
