Start with the OBS log from the session in which the stream failed, then compare its timestamps and clues with OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A log from another session cannot explain the incident, and no specific cause can be named without the affected log and matching platform evidence.
Find the log from the failed session

In OBS, open Help → Log Files. For a completed session, select Upload Last Log File. If the affected session is still open, select Upload Current Log File.

Confirm that the chosen session includes the time the problem occurred. OBS’s support instructions stress that the relevant issue must have happened during the session represented by the log. A log from a later restart or an unaffected session may not contain the evidence you need.

Open the official OBS Log Analyzer and submit the log URL. It checks for common issues and offers suggestions. Treat its flags as leads to verify against the log, the incident time, OBS counters, and YouTube—not as proof of a root cause.

Keep the log URL and note the approximate failure time. You will use that time to compare OBS and YouTube evidence.
Separate a network problem from local rendering or encoding trouble
In OBS, open View → Stats while streaming, or review the Statistics indicators associated with the affected session. Compare dropped frames with rendering and encoding indicators; these point to different parts of the pipeline.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance says this is generally a connection-to-ingest issue and notes that VPN or security software can interfere. OBS’s specific statement is: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That is about dropped frames, not a blanket claim that OBS cannot crash or encounter local performance problems.

A dropped-frame count alone does not identify the failing component. The issue could involve the computer’s network path, available upload capacity, selected ingest server, VPN, or firewall/security software. Check the log around the failure and whether the counter rose at the same time.

Rendering or encoding indicators
If the evidence points to rendering or encoding trouble rather than dropped frames, investigate local performance and the log at the incident time. A network or ingest change will not fix a demonstrated local rendering or encoding bottleneck. The log and system and configuration details are needed to distinguish the possibilities.
Compare OBS with YouTube stream health

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the affected stream and inspect the stream-health messages around the failure. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Compare any warning with the encoder’s actual output settings: protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so match the guidance to the stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

For one specific reference point, YouTube Help recommends a minimum of 6 Mbps and a recommended 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps using H.264. This is guidance for that configuration, not a diagnosis or a universal 24/7 bitrate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Check whether YouTube received the stream, whether its health status changed, and whether the symptom appeared in viewer playback. Those observations help locate the failure: OBS output, YouTube ingest/health, or playback are related but distinct points in the chain.

Use the stream key and destination as evidence
YouTube’s stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If OBS or Live Control Room reports an invalid key or destination, compare the configured server URL and key with the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio rather than continuing to use it.
Check playback and the local archive
A stream can appear to be outputting from OBS while viewers encounter broken playback. Check the YouTube playback page and, if enabled, the local recording or archive. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video and checking that the local archive is growing. A growing archive is useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish that YouTube playback was healthy.

Once the evidence supports a branch, test a single relevant change and reproduce the workload. For a likely network/ingest issue, OBS suggests trying another server or reducing video bitrate. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure the connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends leaving upload headroom: its guidance says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The margin applies to the total bitrate, including primary and backup streams. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

After the test, compare the new OBS log, dropped-frame and rendering/encoding indicators, YouTube stream health, playback, and archive. If several settings or network components change at once, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered.
Troubleshooting by symptom

What can be concluded without the incident log?
Without the affected OBS log, OBS version, operating system, failure time, stream-health message, Statistics counters, and archive result, the specific cause remains unresolved. The useful next evidence is the log from the affected session, the matching YouTube health message, and OBS counters from the same period. Avoid assigning a root cause until those pieces agree.
