A YouTube dropped-frames warning does not, by itself, tell you whether the encoder or your internet connection is at fault. First check the stream as your encoder is producing it: if its preview is already poor, investigate the encoder, settings, system load, and local source. If the preview looks and sounds healthy, test the outbound connection.
Read the warning before changing settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, read the exact stream-health message and note its timestamp. YouTube displays health messages beside the Health Indicator; red messages are critical and yellow messages are moderate. Messages can identify issues involving bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency, so use the specific message to guide the next check rather than treating “dropped frames” as a diagnosis. YouTube Help: Fixing encoder issues.
- Open the live stream in Live Control Room and find the Health Indicator message.
- Note when the warning appeared and whether it names a specific setting or issue.
- Correct an explicit configuration error first. Avoid changing unrelated settings before checking the encoder output.
Check the encoder’s local output
Preview the stream in the encoder while the problem is occurring. YouTube recommends checking the stream’s look and sound there. If the encoder preview is already visibly or audibly poor, the problem is present before YouTube receives the stream; focus on local production rather than assuming the internet is responsible. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors.
- Check encoder-reported errors and whether the system is under heavy CPU load.
- Check the local source and routing—for example, whether the intended video and audio are reaching the encoder correctly.
- Review a local recording or archive, if available, for the same audio or video defects.
If the encoder preview looks and sounds healthy, move on to testing the outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if the connection is the source of the issue.

Verify settings for the selected codec and resolution
Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations and with the particular warning shown in Live Control Room. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec and resolution; do not apply a figure for one combination to another. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Configuration | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be free of dropped frames. A stream can still have problems because of local encoding or an unhealthy connection.

Test the outbound connection if local output is healthy
Run a connection speed test and assess the outbound path when the encoder preview is healthy. A speed test can help identify whether the available connection is a concern, but it does not substitute for observing the actual stream’s health. If YouTube’s troubleshooting points to a connection issue, its guidance is to contact your ISP. A wired connection can be one optional way to test a different local network path; it will not fix CPU load, incorrect encoder settings, or poor local rendering.
Reproduce the real workload before an event
YouTube recommends testing before the event with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream health while live. A static test image may not reveal an issue that appears with fast motion or active audio. Choose a quality level that the available connection can sustain reliably. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview is already choppy, distorted, or missing audio | Encoder errors, CPU load, source selection and routing, and the local recording or archive. |
| The encoder preview is healthy, but Live Control Room reports a connection issue | Test the outbound connection; contact your ISP if the connection is unhealthy. |
| The warning names bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency | Compare that named setting with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and resolution, then run a representative test. |
| The problem appears only with motion or active audio | Repeat the pre-event test with workload closer to the real stream and monitor health while live. |
