YouTube Stream Health Warning After Switching from RTMP to RTMPS: Fixes

An RTMPS switch does not automatically require a new video format. Check the RTMPS endpoint first, then follow Live Control Room’s exact health warning to diagnose encoding or bandwidth issues.

Switching a YouTube encoder from RTMP to RTMPS does not, by itself, require a new video format. First check whether the encoder can use RTMPS and that you copied YouTube’s RTMPS server URL—not the default RTMP URL. If the connection succeeds but Live Control Room still shows a health warning, troubleshoot the specific warning: it may concern bitrate, codec, keyframes, audio, video, resolution, or bandwidth rather than transport.

Read the warning before changing settings

In YouTube Live Control Room, the Health Indicator displays messages with timestamps. An unresolved message can remain visible. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. Use the actual message to choose what to check instead of assuming every warning is an RTMPS problem. See YouTube’s stream-health error guidance.

What you see What it may indicate Start here
SSL or certificate error, or connection timeout RTMPS URL, port, or encoder compatibility problem Check the RTMPS URL and server. For an SSL error, try port 443. For a timeout, confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
The stream connects, but health warnings remain An encoding, ingestion setting, or bandwidth problem Follow the named error category and check codec, bitrate, keyframes, audio/video settings, resolution, and upload capacity.

YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” It carries RTMP over TLS/SSL to encrypt the stream in transit. A change of transport is not, on its own, evidence that the video format must change. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the connection setup.

Check the RTMPS URL, key, and encoder support

  1. Open the stream settings. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab or the scheduled stream. Under Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show an RTMP URL by default, so confirm that the URL you copy is specifically the RTMPS version.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Use the actual server URL displayed for your stream, along with its stream key. Do not substitute an example host from documentation.
  3. Use the encoder’s YouTube RTMPS preset if available. Otherwise, enter the RTMPS server URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Check the encoder’s documentation or update it if RTMPS is not offered.
  4. If you see an SSL or certificate error, verify the protocol and server. YouTube says both should use rtmps, not just rtmp. If the URL appears correct and the certificate error persists, try port 443 in the URL or the encoder’s port setting.
  5. If the connection times out, check RTMPS support. Recheck the server URL, then confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that an encoder may not support RTMPS if the timeout continues.

If the stream connects, diagnose the health category

A connected encoder can still send a stream YouTube considers unhealthy. YouTube’s error categories cover format and codecs, bitrate, audio streams and channels, video streams and interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency or GOP, resolution, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Change the setting named in the Live Control Room message rather than altering unrelated settings.

Match codec, resolution, and frame rate

Use YouTube’s current recommended live encoder settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the matching row instead of reusing a number from a different configuration.

For example, YouTube’s page lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not evidence that either value is right for another resolution, frame rate, codec, or available connection.

Check bitrate mode and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Check the encoder’s bitrate mode and keyframe or GOP setting against those recommendations. A keyframe interval set too long can trigger a warning even when the RTMPS connection itself is working.

Check audio and video stream settings

If the warning names audio, verify the audio stream and channel configuration in the encoder. If it names video, check the video stream, interlacing, frame rate, and resolution settings. For a primary/backup mismatch, compare the two streams’ settings and correct the reported difference.

Make sure the connection has enough upload capacity

The stream bitrate must fit the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Network sharing and disruptions can reduce available capacity; a stream that fits the connection only under ideal conditions may still encounter health problems. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder guidance.

If you send both a primary stream and a backup for failover, account for the combined primary and backup bitrate, then allow the recommended headroom. Do not assess capacity against only one stream when both are being sent.

Test the setup before the scheduled event

  1. Set up the stream at least two hours before the event, as YouTube’s streaming tips suggest.
  2. Use representative video motion and audio so the test reflects the content you plan to broadcast.
  3. Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
  4. Preview the stream in Live Control Room, watch the Health Indicator and its timestamped messages, and correct any remaining error.
  5. Verify that the event is reachable before relying on it for viewers.

Common causes and practical fixes

  • The encoder still points to RTMP: Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in the stream settings; a protocol change requires the corresponding endpoint, not merely a different label in the encoder.
  • An SSL or certificate error persists: Check that both the protocol and server use RTMPS, then try port 443 if the URL otherwise looks correct.
  • The connection times out: Recheck the server URL and verify that the encoder supports RTMPS; use an updated encoder or built-in YouTube RTMPS preset if available.
  • The encoder connects but health is poor: Follow the exact Live Control Room error category and check the named encoding or stream setting.
  • Bitrate-related warnings appear intermittently: Check that the bitrate fits available upload capacity with about 20% headroom, including the backup bitrate if dual-streaming.
  • Warnings concern keyframes or GOP: Compare the encoder setting with YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum.
