If your encoder cannot publish a YouTube live stream from an Indian office network, first check that it is using the exact RTMPS server URL and matching stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and that outbound TCP port 443 is allowed to that destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises trying port 443 when an SSL error occurs. A timeout alone does not prove the firewall is responsible: a wrong URL or an encoder without RTMPS support can cause similar problems.
Which port should your office network allow?
For YouTube RTMPS ingest, ask IT to check outbound TCP 443 to the exact RTMPS hostname shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and says to use port 443 if the encoder allows you to specify a port and reports an SSL error. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guidance and encoder settings guidance.
Use the hostname YouTube supplies for your stream, not a sample hostname copied from a help page. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a complete, stable destination-hostname allowlist, so IT should verify the actual ingest destination rather than opening access to an assumed list.
Check the encoder before blaming the firewall
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and reveal the stream settings. Copy the RTMPS URL and its corresponding stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the URL and key in the encoder.
- In the encoder, select RTMPS—not ordinary RTMP—and enter the exact URL and matching key. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube lists an incorrect server URL and lack of encoder RTMPS support among possible causes of connection timeouts.
- If the encoder reports an SSL error, try specifying port 443 in the RTMPS URL or in the encoder’s port setting, if available, as described in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- Ask your network administrator to review firewall and proxy logs while you make a controlled connection attempt from the encoder computer. Have them check whether the connection to the actual ingest hostname on outbound TCP 443 is allowed, reset, or intercepted. This log check applies YouTube’s URL and port guidance; YouTube does not prescribe a particular diagnostic command.
What IT should check on an Indian office network
YouTube’s cited help pages offer general guidance, not a separate port requirement for Indian offices. They do not establish that Indian office networks commonly block a particular port or need a special India-specific setting. The relevant details are your organization’s own egress policy, proxy configuration, and any TLS inspection in place.

- Whether outbound TCP 443 to the stream’s actual RTMPS hostname is permitted.
- Whether a firewall or proxy resets or intercepts the encoder’s connection.
- Whether TLS inspection or another proxy setting prevents the encoder from completing its secure connection.
- Whether the encoder is using the RTMPS URL and key currently shown in Live Control Room.
If the connection works but the stream is unstable
A permitted connection can still fail to publish reliably if the office connection has insufficient upload capacity or if other users consume available bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to include both primary and backup streams in the bandwidth budget when using them. The backup-stream figure is a sizing consideration for a dual-stream setup, not a requirement that every stream have a backup. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare the encoder’s required upload rate with the capacity actually available to it during streaming, allowing for that headroom and shared office use. If you use a primary and backup stream, account for both in the total.

When to consider YouTube HLS ingest
If RTMPS cannot be used, HLS may be an alternative if your encoder supports it and your YouTube workflow is configured for HLS. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions use an HTTPS URL and require an HLS-capable encoder. HTTPS does not guarantee that your company network will permit the connection: IT still needs to check its egress and proxy rules.
