To make a variable frame rate (VFR) video dependable for a YouTube Live loop, re-encode it onto a constant frame-rate timeline, then load the converted file into an encoder that can repeat it. Merely changing the file’s frame-rate label—or copying its video stream—does not convert its frame timing. Pick a rate that suits the source, test the picture, audio, and loop boundary, and check the encoder’s live preview before relying on the stream.
What VFR conversion changes—and what it does not
A VFR file presents frames at intervals that can vary. A constant frame rate (CFR) conversion places frames on a regular timeline. Depending on the selected output rate and the source timestamps, conversion may duplicate or drop frames; it cannot restore motion that the camera or recording did not capture.
FFmpeg’s fps filter uses input presentation timestamps to keep, repeat, or drop frames to form a regular output cadence. FFmpeg’s output -r option can also duplicate or drop frames when encoding. In stream-copy mode, however, setting an output rate does not change the video frames. See the FFmpeg filter documentation and FFmpeg command documentation.
Choose a frame rate for the source and stream
There is no single YouTube-mandated frame rate for converting every VFR file. Choose a rate that fits the source’s intended motion and the live encoder’s profile. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps; that is a ceiling in the cited guidance, not a recommendation to convert every source to 60 fps.

When comparing possible output rates, consider how well each fits the source cadence and whether repeated or dropped frames will be noticeable. Confirm that the encoder can send the selected frame rate, resolution, codec, and audio format to YouTube, and that your upstream connection can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom.
Convert the file with FFmpeg
1. Inspect the source
Use a media probe or video editor to check the file’s dimensions, audio tracks, and frame timing. Do not assume that a displayed average frame rate proves the file is constant frame rate. Identify the cadence you want before converting.

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
2. Re-encode onto a regular timeline
With FFmpeg, use the fps filter to create the chosen output cadence, or use output -r while encoding. For example, a command pattern is:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac output-cfr.mp4

Here, 30 is only an example; choose a rate appropriate to your source and encoder. The example re-encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC. Check the options against your installed FFmpeg version and file, and adjust encoding choices to your needs. Do not use stream copy for the video if the goal is to convert VFR frames to CFR.
3. Check the result before loading it
Play the converted file from beginning to end. Check for judder or unexpectedly repeated frames, confirm that audio remains in sync, and inspect the last-to-first transition if you plan to loop it. Conversion alone cannot guarantee a seamless loop.

Send and loop the converted file on YouTube Live
Configure YouTube and the encoder
A converted file is not itself a live broadcast. An encoder must read the file, repeat it using that encoder’s media-loop feature, and send the resulting live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s live stream settings explain stream setup; loop controls vary by encoder.
Keep the live-ingest settings distinct from advice for uploading a video file. YouTube’s general upload encoding recommendations cover uploaded files, while its live encoder settings cover the outgoing stream. The cited live guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It supports up to 60 fps and provides bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check the current page for the range that matches your settings.

Test the full playback path
- Load the CFR file into your encoder and enable that encoder’s repeat-media or loop option.
- Enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then set the outgoing codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval to compatible values.
- Start a test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Listen and watch through the end of the file and its transition back to the start. Check picture, audio synchronization, and whether the encoder continues sending after the loop.
- Confirm your upload bandwidth can support the selected bitrate with headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend bandwidth margin and testing before going live.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The output still behaves like VFR: Confirm that the video was re-encoded with a frame-rate conversion step. Setting a rate while copying the video stream does not convert its frames.
- Motion looks uneven: The chosen output cadence may cause visible repeats or drops. Try a rate better suited to the source’s intended motion, then review the converted file again.
- Audio drifts or is out of sync: Check playback of the converted file independently before diagnosing the live encoder. If the file plays correctly but the test stream does not, inspect the encoder’s input and output configuration.
- The stream does not restart at the file’s end: Check that the encoder’s media-loop feature is enabled and that it applies to the selected file. Looping behavior is encoder-specific.
- YouTube reports stream or connection trouble: Recheck the stream URL and key, the encoder’s supported ingest settings, and whether the upstream connection has enough capacity and headroom for the configured bitrate.
- The loop has a visible or audible jump: Inspect the file’s end-to-start transition. A CFR conversion does not make the source content’s boundary seamless.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
