Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11First identify what is failing: a playlist of files played inside OBS, a video being uploaded to YouTube, or a YouTube video playing in an OBS browser source. These are different workflows and do not share one codec fix. For a local playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and verify each file and its actual audio and video codecs. For an upload problem, check the file against YouTube’s upload recommendations. A browser-source playback error needs its own diagnosis; the available guidance does not establish that it is a codec error.
Identify which workflow is failing
Before changing a file or installing a codec pack, record the full error wording and establish where it appears. A filename extension such as .mp4 identifies a container, not necessarily the codecs of the video and audio streams inside it.
- Local playlist in OBS: OBS is opening files from your computer as a source. Playlist support and the installed VLC dependency matter.
- YouTube upload: YouTube is processing a file you submitted. Its recommended upload encoding settings are relevant here.
- YouTube video in an OBS browser source: OBS is displaying web content. Do not assume that a message in this workflow means the local file has an unsupported codec.
For a useful diagnosis, note the full error, file name and extension, actual video and audio codecs, OBS version, operating system, and whether the file plays in another media player. If only one item in a playlist fails, start with that item rather than changing every file.
Fix a playlist made from local video files
Use the playlist-capable OBS source
OBS’s VLC Video source is similar to Media Source but supports playlists and uses VLC libraries for extended media support over the built-in Media Source. If you need OBS to play a sequence of local files, add a VLC Video source rather than assuming Media Source provides playlist behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install VLC for your operating system if it is not already installed. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- Match the VLC architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s documentation states, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.”
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, then configure its playlist with the local files you want to play.
- Test playback. If OBS reports an error or skips a file, test each playlist item individually so you can identify whether the issue is isolated to one file.
Installing VLC enables the source; it does not guarantee that every arbitrary video and audio codec will play correctly. A recognized extension is not proof that the streams inside a file are supported.
Inspect the file before converting it
Use a media-inspection tool to identify the container and the actual video and audio codecs for each failing file. Check whether the file plays in another player, and compare a working playlist item with the failing one. This can help distinguish a damaged or unusual file from a playlist setup or dependency problem.

If conversion is necessary, keep a copy of the original and choose the output format and settings for the source file, intended use, and available hardware. Do not assume that changing only the container will fix an unsupported codec: the container and codecs are separate properties. No single conversion command or bitrate is appropriate for every source and use case.
If the problem is a YouTube upload
YouTube’s upload recommendations apply to files being uploaded for YouTube to process. They are not a direct fix for a local OBS source error. YouTube lists MP4 as a recommended container and H.264 as a recommended video codec. For audio, it recommends AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, with a 48 kHz sample rate, and recommends uploading at the same frame rate as the recording.

When an upload needs re-encoding, first inspect its streams, then use an appropriate conversion workflow and preserve the original. YouTube’s published recommendations include 1080p SDR video at 8 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). These are upload recommendations, not universal OBS playback settings or guarantees that a particular source file will work.
Do not confuse recording containers with upload encoding
OBS describes MKV as flexible and resilient for recording. MP4 and MOV can offer broader compatibility with downstream editing and upload workflows, but regular MP4 and MOV recordings need finalization. Container choice involves a trade-off; it does not by itself establish which codecs a file contains or whether a particular OBS source can decode them.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is unavailable in OBS | Whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check for the source again. |
| The playlist opens, but one item fails | The failing file’s actual audio and video codecs, whether it plays in another player, and whether other playlist files work. | Inspect that file’s streams individually. If conversion is needed, retain the original and choose settings for the intended output. |
| OBS plays the local file, but a YouTube upload is rejected or mishandled | The upload’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and whether it follows YouTube’s upload recommendations. | Use YouTube’s recommended upload profile as a guide; do not treat it as an OBS local-playback fix. |
| A video in an OBS browser source shows an error | The complete wording, whether the page or video works outside OBS, and whether the failing source is actually a local media file. | Diagnose the browser-source playback separately. The error alone does not establish a local codec problem. |
| Changing an extension or container does not help | The codecs inside the container. Renaming a file or changing its container does not necessarily change its encoded streams. | Inspect the streams first; convert only if needed and select a suitable output profile. |
