Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First determine which playlist is skipping: a local playlist in OBS’s VLC Video source, or a YouTube playlist embedded in an OBS browser source. They have different causes. If the problem is in a local VLC playlist, check VLC installation, source settings, and the affected file; if it is an embedded YouTube playlist, check whether that video can be embedded, viewed by the audience, and shared with them. Also compare OBS’s preview with YouTube playback before changing settings.
First, locate where the skip happens
Ask: “Does the skip also appear in the OBS preview or a local recording, or only in the YouTube live playback?” If OBS preview or a recording already omits the item, investigate the OBS source or media file. If OBS appears continuous but the YouTube viewer playback skips or stalls, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, event accessibility, and stream quality before blaming the local playlist. YouTube advises streamers to verify that an encoder-based event is accessible and to monitor audio and video quality; it also notes network congestion can cause live playback problems. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guide.
If OBS is playing local files with VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed to play multiple media items as a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The source settings offer playlist order, shuffle, looping, visibility behavior, network caching, audio track, and subtitle controls. The documented defaults include Loop Playlist on, Shuffle Playlist off, and network caching at 400 ms; these are settings, not evidence that any one setting caused a skip. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Check the source and its playlist
- Confirm that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source and inspect its playlist. Confirm the missing item is listed and that the list order is what you expect.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. If you expect files in a fixed order, turn shuffle off.
- Check Loop Playlist if you expect playback to restart after the last item. Looping controls the end of the list; it does not establish why an individual file is skipped.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. This setting controls what happens to playback while the source is hidden, which can matter if the source is shown and hidden during a scene change.
- Compare other relevant source settings, such as audio track and subtitles, if the apparent skip is limited to sound or captions rather than the video item.
Test a file that fails
If just one local file is skipped, compare it with a file that plays. Check that the file is present, that its path is correct, and that its format is among those listed in the OBS guide. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. A listed extension does not prove that every file using it will work in a particular setup; use the OBS log and file details to investigate an individual failure rather than guessing at a codec problem.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Try the affected item by itself in a separate VLC Video source or a temporary test scene.
- Compare its behavior with a known-good file using the same source settings.
- Review the OBS log for source or media errors after reproducing the problem.
- Record the OBS version, operating system, file type, and whether the file fails in OBS preview, a local recording, or both. Those details help distinguish a source problem from a YouTube playback problem.
If OBS is displaying an embedded YouTube playlist
A browser-based playlist follows YouTube’s video access and embedding rules; it is not the same as an OBS VLC playlist. YouTube Help identifies three relevant reasons a playlist item may not appear: the uploader disabled embedding, the video is age-restricted, or the video is private and has not been shared with the viewer. YouTube recommends using public videos with embedding enabled for embedded playlists. Check the affected video’s status and sharing settings, and confirm that the intended viewers can access it. See YouTube Help: Videos not appearing in embedded playlist and YouTube Help: Share playlists.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
| What you observe | Where to investigate | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| The item is absent in OBS preview or a local recording. | OBS source or local media file. | Check VLC installation and bitness, playlist order and shuffle, visibility behavior, file path, supported format, and OBS log. |
| The item plays in OBS, but viewers do not see it in an embedded YouTube playlist. | YouTube video permissions and audience access. | Check embedding, age restriction, and whether a private video was shared with the viewer. |
| OBS looks continuous, but YouTube playback skips or stalls. | YouTube event accessibility, stream quality, or network conditions. | Compare with the Live Control Room preview and check stream quality before changing the OBS playlist. |
| The video item plays, but its audio seems late or cut off. | Audio playback or monitoring behavior, which may be distinct from a skipped file. | Compare the OBS preview with a local recording and investigate the specific audio symptom. |
Audio symptoms are not necessarily skipped-file bugs
OBS issue reports describe specific VLC playlist audio symptoms, but they do not diagnose another setup. One report opened on 2023-07-31 describes approximately one second missing at the beginning and end of MP3 files in a VLC playlist: OBS issue 9345. A separate issue, opened on 2022-01-28 and closed as completed on 2023-07-23, concerned delayed audio monitoring; a project member said the delay was limited to monitoring and recordings captured playback correctly: OBS issue 7552. These are examples of different symptoms, not proof of a cause in your case.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing stream settings before checking the source: If the OBS preview itself skips a local item, start with the source and file rather than assuming the YouTube stream caused it.
- Treating embedded and local playlists as the same feature: Local VLC files depend on the OBS source and local media; embedded YouTube items depend on YouTube permissions and viewer access.
- Assuming a setting value is a fix: OBS’s documented 400 ms network-caching default is not evidence that changing caching will correct a skipped item.
- Assuming an extension proves compatibility: A format appearing in OBS’s supported list does not establish why a particular file fails; check the actual source behavior and log.
- Applying an issue report to an unrelated setup: The reports above describe defined audio symptoms, not a confirmed general OBS playlist-skipping bug.
