Repeat for every language, then preview and publish each track. For a translated track that is already timed, upload a supported timed caption file; YouTube’s auto-sync option is for a transcript in the language actually spoken, not for translating it.
Replay subtitles and live captions are different workflows
This guide is for the video left on your channel after a YouTube Live broadcast. Add its reviewed multilingual subtitle tracks in YouTube Studio after the stream ends. Captions delivered during an active broadcast use a separate live-caption workflow and should not be confused with replay subtitles.
YouTube’s automatic captions are in the video’s default language only. Live automatic captions are documented as English-only, subject to stream conditions and feature availability, and do not remain on the video after the stream; YouTube generates new automatic captions for the VOD, which may differ. If you need stable, reviewed captions in multiple languages on the replay, prepare those tracks for the replay itself. See YouTube’s guidance on automatic captioning.
Prepare a separate track for each language
- Check the replay’s original language. In YouTube Studio, confirm the video’s language setting before preparing tracks. The setting helps YouTube understand the video. If you change it, future translated-subtitle workflows use the newly selected source language; existing draft and published subtitles are not changed. See YouTube’s instructions for changing an uploaded video’s language.
- Prepare and review each translation. Make a distinct text version for every target language. Check names, game terminology, numbers, jokes, and meaning; auto-sync will not translate the text for you.
- Open the replay’s subtitle controls. In YouTube Studio, go to Subtitles, select the video, add the target language, and add a subtitle track. Repeat the language-and-track step for each translation.
- Choose how to provide the captions. Upload a supported timed file if the translated captions already have timestamps. If you have a transcript that matches the audio’s spoken language, you can provide it for auto-sync when suitable. Or type or paste captions manually while the video plays; Studio assigns timings, which still need review.
- Preview the full replay and correct the track. Check timing, reading breaks, spelling, speaker identification, and translation against the audio. Review any automatically transcribed words rather than assuming they are exact.
- Publish and verify. Publish the track and confirm that its language appears in the video player’s subtitle controls. Repeat the preview and verification for every language.
YouTube describes caption files as containing spoken text and timestamps; some formats can also carry position and style. Supported file types can change, so check the current YouTube instructions for adding subtitles and captions before exporting or uploading a file.

Choose the right method for the material you have
| What you have | Suitable route | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| A translated subtitle track with timing | Upload a supported timed caption file for that language. | Confirm the file type is currently supported, then preview timing and text against the replay. |
| A transcript in the language spoken in the video | Use YouTube’s auto-sync option if the audio and video are suitable. | Auto-sync is not translation. YouTube cautions against this route for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio. |
| Caption text but no timing | Type or paste captions manually while playing the video. | Studio assigns timings; review them across the full video. |
| Text translated into another language, but no timed file | Prepare and time a separate translated track, or use manual entry for that language. | Do not submit translated text as an auto-sync transcript for audio in a different language. |
Keep translated metadata separate from subtitles
Subtitle tracks make the replay’s spoken content available as on-screen text in each added language. If viewers search in other languages, translated titles and descriptions are a separate discovery aid: YouTube says translated metadata may appear in search results for viewers using those languages. It supports, but does not replace, subtitle tracks. See YouTube’s tools to translate content.
Subtitles are also distinct from multi-language audio and dubbing. YouTube documents multi-language audio as a separate video feature, and automatic dubbing has its own scope and eligibility; neither is created by adding subtitle tracks. See multi-language features and automatic dubbing.

If you mean captions during the active broadcast
Live caption delivery is not the same as adding languages to a replay. YouTube documents embedded 608/708 captions and supported software or HTTP caption delivery for live streams. The 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube says its documented live-caption workflow currently supports one caption track. That live-workflow limit does not describe the separate subtitle tracks you can add to a recorded replay. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Common problems and fixes
- The translated text is being auto-synced against the wrong language. Auto-sync is for transcript text that matches the spoken language. Use a timed file or manual entry for a translation in another language.
- Auto-sync gives poor results. Check that the transcript matches the spoken words and that the audio is clear. YouTube cautions against auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio; manually time or correct the track instead.
- A caption file will not upload. Check YouTube’s current supported-file guidance rather than relying on an assumed extension. Make sure the track is being added under the intended language.
- Automatic live captions are missing from the replay. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video. Add reviewed subtitle tracks to the replay itself.
- A language track is not visible in the player. Confirm it was published for the correct replay and language, then check the player’s subtitle controls. Reopen the Studio track to check its status and content.
- Viewers still see untranslated titles or descriptions. Subtitle tracks do not translate metadata. Add translated title and description separately if you want to support discovery in those languages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the replay is part of a YouTube channel you keep live around the clock, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams each upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
