If an FFmpeg YouTube stream stops on a Linux server, first confirm whether the kernel or a service/container memory limit killed FFmpeg. A stopped stream alone does not prove an out-of-memory (OOM) event: FFmpeg may exit on an input or encoding error, lose its network/RTMP connection, or encounter an ended or invalid YouTube broadcast. Check the logs and memory boundary before changing encoding settings or adding RAM.
How to check if Linux OOM killer killed FFmpeg
Preserve logs before restarting
Record when the stream stopped and save FFmpeg’s stderr, service logs and kernel logs before repeated restarts overwrite useful context. On a systemd host, inspect the relevant service and kernel journal around the failure time:
journalctl -u YOUR_SERVICE --since "2026-10-03 12:00:00"
journalctl -k --since "2026-10-03 12:00:00"
Replace YOUR_SERVICE and the example timestamp with the actual service name and failure time. Look for kernel OOM-killer messages naming ffmpeg or a related process, the service’s exit status/result, and any container or cgroup OOM indicators. A restart loop can conceal the first failure, so retain logs from the original stop.
Check the service or container as well as the host
A process can hit its cgroup memory limit while the host still has available RAM. For cgroup v2, find the actual cgroup containing FFmpeg—systemd services and containers usually have their own—and inspect memory.current, memory.peak, memory.high, memory.max, memory.events and, if present, memory.events.local. Paths depend on the host’s cgroup layout and kernel version; read the files for the actual process’s cgroup rather than assuming a universal path.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare event counters before and after a failure when possible. The Linux kernel documents high, max, oom and oom_kill in memory.events. These counters can be hierarchical; memory.events.local, where available, helps establish whether the specific cgroup recorded the event. See the Linux kernel cgroup v2 documentation for the control files and their semantics.
Interpret the cgroup limit correctly
| Control or evidence | What it indicates | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
memory.high |
Crossing this boundary causes throttling and reclaim pressure; it does not itself invoke the OOM killer. | Check whether usage is repeatedly above the threshold and whether reclaim pressure coincides with the stop. |
memory.max |
A hard memory cap. If usage reaches it and cannot be reduced, the cgroup OOM killer is invoked. | Compare the cap with measured peak usage and the relevant oom and oom_kill event counters. |
| Host-wide memory pressure | Available RAM is constrained across the machine, rather than only by FFmpeg’s service/container limit. | Check host memory use and competing processes at the failure time. |
On cgroup v1, paths and controls differ. Do not apply v2 filenames or procedures to a v1 hierarchy without checking its actual configuration; the kernel marks the v1 memory-controller OOM control interface deprecated and points to v2 controls for some corresponding functions. See the Linux kernel cgroup v1 memory-controller documentation.
Measure memory while the FFmpeg stream is running
Monitor FFmpeg’s resident memory (RSS) and the containing cgroup’s usage over enough time to catch a gradual rise and brief peaks, including the minutes around the stop. Record concurrent FFmpeg jobs, filters, input resolution and frame rate, encoder, and other services sharing the same memory limit. A single snapshot taken after a restart may miss the peak that triggered an OOM kill.

FFmpeg offers -benchmark and -benchmark_all for performance/resource reporting, but its documentation warns that maximum-memory reporting is unsupported on some systems and may show zero. Treat operating-system process and cgroup observations as primary evidence; a zero FFmpeg maximum is not proof of low memory use. Check the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

If the service or container hit its hard limit
If measured peak usage reaches memory.max and the cgroup records OOM activity, review the service/container allocation. Increase it only if the host has capacity after accounting for other workloads, and size it from observed demand with appropriate headroom—not from a universal RAM rule. A cgroup can be the bottleneck even when the host appears to have spare memory.

If the whole host is under pressure
Reduce competing memory consumers or concurrent jobs, or provision capacity based on measured peak demand. Raising one service’s cap cannot create physical memory; it may simply shift pressure to the host or other services.
If memory rises over time
Investigate the FFmpeg command, wrapper, input and filter path, process supervision, and installed version using the logs and a minimal reproducible workload. The available documentation does not establish a specific FFmpeg memory leak or a universal defect in YouTube streaming, so diagnose the actual pipeline rather than assuming one.
Simplify only what measurements implicate
Removing unnecessary filters, avoiding needless transcoding, reducing resolution, or lowering concurrency are candidate experiments when measurements point to those parts of the workload. They are not guaranteed fixes. Change one relevant factor at a time and observe process and cgroup peaks again.

Do not routinely disable OOM handling. That does not remove the underlying memory shortage; reduce usage or revise a confirmed undersized limit after checking available host capacity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rule out non-memory causes of a stopped stream
If kernel, service and cgroup evidence does not support an OOM kill, inspect FFmpeg’s final error and exit status, verify that the input is still available, and check the stream key, YouTube broadcast state, and network/RTMP errors. An FFmpeg process running locally does not, by itself, establish that the YouTube stream is healthy. Do not attribute a stop to YouTube without evidence from the logs and broadcast state.
Run FFmpeg as a managed background service
For background runs, prevent FFmpeg from checking interactive console input. The FFmpeg FAQ explains that it normally checks console input and that background jobs can be suspended by terminal behavior. Its remedy is -nostdin; alternatively, redirect standard input from /dev/null. Add the option to your existing command, for example:

ffmpeg -nostdin [your existing input, processing, and output options]
Use a service manager to make boot behavior, logs and restart limits explicit. Bound automatic restarts and alert on repeated exits: a supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg, but repeated OOM kills will continue until the memory pressure or limit is addressed. -nostdin prevents an interactive-input issue; it does not fix OOM, network, input, or YouTube broadcast failures. Read the FFmpeg FAQ for the background-task explanation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than troubleshooting a server you want to keep managing, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
