If your YouTube loop stream went offline after you renamed or moved its video, update the file path in the OBS source that plays it. A Media Source points to one local file; a VLC Video source can hold a playlist of local files. After repairing the path, check playback in OBS, then separately confirm the stream connection and preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
Repair the OBS file path
Renaming a file does not update the location already stored in an OBS source. The path diagnosis is an inference from OBS’s documented local-file source design; OBS does not document a special renamed-file recovery dialog. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS version and operating system.
- Find the source that plays the loop. In your scene’s Sources list, identify the Media Source for a single video or VLC Video for a playlist. OBS explains the available source types in its Sources Guide.
- For a single video, repoint Media Source. Select the source, open its Properties, and use the local file picker to choose the video at its current name and location. Leave Loop enabled if the video should repeat when it finishes. OBS documents Media Source and its loop setting in Media Sources.
- For a playlist, repair VLC Video. Open that source’s Properties and update the playlist entry whose path changed, or remove the stale entry and add the file again. Keep Loop Playlist enabled if the sequence should restart at the end. VLC Video requires VLC installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Check local playback before going live. Confirm the intended video appears in the OBS preview and that its audio is present. If it does not, verify that the file exists and opens on the computer, then check the path or playlist entry again.
- Verify the outgoing stream separately. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the encoder connection, stream status and preview. OBS local preview only shows that the source can play on the computer; it does not prove the encoder is connected to YouTube. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality in its live-streaming tips.
Choose the right source and loop setting
| Source | Best for | Loop setting | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video | Loop repeats the file after playback ends. | Uses a local media file. OBS lists supported video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Source: OBS Media Sources. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of local files | Loop Playlist restarts the sequence after the list ends. | Requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Source: OBS Media Sources. |
Loop controls govern media playback only. They do not repair a renamed path, set YouTube’s stream key, or guarantee that an internet connection or live stream will stay up.
If fixing the path does not bring the stream back
The video is missing from OBS preview
- Check that the renamed or moved file still exists and opens locally.
- For Media Source, use the file picker to point to its current location. For VLC Video, inspect the relevant playlist entry and replace the stale path.
OBS preview works, but YouTube says the stream is offline
Stop changing the media path and troubleshoot the encoder-to-ingest connection. Confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key, and check OBS’s connection status. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server; its connection troubleshooting guide covers these symptoms. YouTube provides the stream URL and key through Live Control Room settings; see Manage live stream settings.

The encoder is connected, but playback is delayed or unavailable
Check the Live Control Room preview and stream status, then the public watch page. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality rather than relying on the OBS preview alone: YouTube live-streaming tips.
Keep the path from breaking again
- Keep loop files in a stable folder and avoid renaming or moving them after configuring OBS. If you do change a file’s name or location, update the source or playlist path. This is practical guidance based on how local-file sources work, not an OBS uptime guarantee.
- OBS Profiles save most output and stream settings, while Scene Collections store scenes and sources. Exporting a profile is not a substitute for relinking a moved media file. See OBS Profiles.
