What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a live show with remote guests, start with a browser-based live studio such as StreamYard or Restream—not a general-purpose video-call app. These tools are built around a host bringing guests and shared material into a broadcast. Consider Riverside if separate participant recordings for later editing matter as much as going live. There is no evidence here establishing one platform as objectively best, so choose by guest experience, production needs, and recording workflow.
What a live-stream guest tool needs to do
Replacing Skype for a broadcast is not just about finding another way to make a call. The guest needs a simple way to join, while the host needs to decide when that guest—and any screen share or presentation—appears in the live production.
- Joining: Can guests enter through a link and browser, or must they install an app or create an account?
- Show control: Can the host keep a guest backstage until ready and choose when shared content goes on air?
- Capacity: What is the on-screen limit, and does it depend on the plan?
- Distribution: Does the studio support the destinations and graphics your show needs?
- Recording: Does it capture separate files for editing, or only the live program?
- Setup: Can guests use their existing devices, and are the host and guests prepared for network and audio issues?
The options below are assessed from product documentation and vendor materials, not independent hands-on testing. Features and plan limits can change; check the linked product documentation before settling on a workflow.
Best options for adding remote guests
StreamYard: straightforward browser-based guest entry
StreamYard’s documented workflow starts with a link the host provides. A guest opens it in a supported browser, grants camera and microphone access, and enters a display name. The host—not the guest—decides when to add that person to the broadcast. Mobile joining is also described in the StreamYard Help Center guest instructions. This backstage-to-broadcast handoff is useful when you want to check a guest before putting them on screen.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
StreamYard’s paid-plan documentation lists up to 10 on-screen participants total, with additional backstage participants depending on plan. It also lists a guest greenroom, separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants, and custom RTMP destinations. These are plan-dependent capabilities; verify the current limits and availability in the StreamYard Help Center plan documentation.
One separate feature, Guest Destinations, is available on paid plans. A guest must sign into a StreamYard account to add destinations; each guest can add up to two, with six guest destinations total for a broadcast. The feature applies to live studio streams, according to the StreamYard Guest Destinations documentation.

For audio, StreamYard’s Help Center says: “We recommend wearing earbuds or headphones to prevent audio echoes.” That is the vendor’s setup guidance, not an independent test result.
Restream: guest controls for screen shares and presentations
Restream’s guest documentation describes controls for a guest’s camera and microphone, screen sharing, presentations, an extra camera input, and private chat. The host can choose whether to show shared screens, presentations, or the extra camera input on the stream. These controls can suit interviews or game-related shows where a guest needs to present a screen or visual material. See Restream’s guest feature guide for its current joining and device directions.

Riverside says guests can join from iOS or Android using its live-streaming app, and describes screen sharing, presentations, and audience engagement. Its guidance recommends good-quality equipment, including a suitable camera and microphone. That is optional equipment advice; the guest workflow itself is provided by the software.
OBS: deep scene control, but not a turnkey guest link
OBS may fit a producer who wants detailed control over scenes and is willing to assemble a separate remote-guest workflow. StreamYard’s vendor-authored comparison describes OBS as free and offering deep scene customization, while noting that it lacks a native guest-link workflow and typically requires third-party tools for remote guests. Treat that as a workflow comparison from StreamYard, not a neutral benchmark; see its OBS comparison.

In practice, do not choose OBS alone expecting a Skype-like invitation flow. Decide how guests will connect, how their audio and video will reach the production, and how you will manage permissions and scene changes before the show.

| Tool | Best fit | Guest and production notes | Recording notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamYard | A host-led studio where guests should join through a link and wait until brought on air | Browser link workflow; mobile joining is described. Paid-plan documentation lists up to 10 on-screen participants total; verify plan limits. | Paid-plan documentation lists separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants. |
| Restream | Shows where guests need screen sharing, presentations, extra camera input, or private chat | Guest documentation describes these controls and lets the host choose what shared material appears on stream. | Not stated in the cited guest feature documentation. |
| Riverside | Live shows where individual participant files and post-production are also priorities | Product page advertises up to seven guests and mobile app joining; confirm current details on the product page. | Advertises separate participant audio/video files and recording up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio. |
| OBS with a separate guest workflow | Producers who prioritize scene customization and can set up additional guest tools | StreamYard’s comparison says OBS has no native guest-link workflow and typically needs third-party tools for remote guests. | Not stated in the cited comparison. |
Use the table as a workflow guide, not a performance ranking. If fast guest entry and host control matter most, compare StreamYard and Restream first. If separate recordings are central to your editing process, evaluate Riverside’s advertised recording workflow. If scene-level customization is the priority, consider OBS only with a guest-connection plan alongside it.
Prepare guests before going live
Send the joining instructions early
Tell guests which browser or app to use, which device they should join from, and whether they will share a screen or presentation. Ask them to join early enough to test camera, microphone, and any content. For StreamYard, send the studio link and explain that they will enter with a display name and will not appear in the broadcast until the host adds them.
Prevent echo and connection problems
- Ask guests to use earbuds or headphones and avoid joining the same room on multiple devices with audio enabled.
- Use a strong internet connection, as StreamYard’s guest instructions recommend.
- Close unnecessary applications or browser tabs that may compete for network or device resources.
- Agree on a backup contact method in case the guest drops from the studio.
- Have the host check screen sharing or presentation visibility before bringing that material on air.
Plan the on-air handoff
Decide who introduces the guest, when the host will bring them into the show, and who controls shared content. Keep guests backstage while resolving camera, microphone, or presentation issues. For a panel, check the on-screen participant limit for the specific plan before inviting everyone.
