Prepare the slideshow as a continuous video first, then send it to YouTube Live with an encoder such as OBS Studio. Use a consistent canvas, review the full sequence and its loop point, and configure the encoder for YouTube’s current recommendations: RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. A 24/7 broadcast also needs a computer and internet connection that remain available—or a cloud service to run the uploaded video for you.

1. Build and check the slideshow video

Set the canvas and image sequence

Choose a single aspect ratio and output size before arranging the images. A 16:9 canvas is a practical target for the YouTube player; the OBS Project guide recommends it to avoid black bars. For standard-definition-range video, YouTube specifies square pixels and Rec. 709 color. These are output targets, not requirements for a particular slideshow editor.

  • Use images you have permission to broadcast.
  • Decide the order, how long each image stays on screen, and whether to use transitions, titles, or other text.
  • Check that important details and text remain readable at the intended viewing size.
  • Choose whether the stream should be silent or include music or narration. Use audio you have permission to broadcast.

The official YouTube encoder guidance covers live ingestion settings, not a required image-to-video editor, local video container, or slideshow duration. Choose an authoring tool and export format that your playback or capture workflow can handle.

Preview the rendered video, including the loop

Review the exported video rather than relying only on how the source images look in an editor. Check for unexpected cropping, letterboxing, scaling artifacts, abrupt transitions, and small text. Play the end directly into the beginning to see whether the loop has a visible jump. If you want silence, confirm the rendered file and encoder do not add unintended audio; if you include sound, test it as part of the actual stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Choose the live encoder settings

Use RTMPS for a routine OBS setup

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. It is RTMP tunneled through SSL; the technical guide specifies YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, protocol, and port 443. In OBS, choose YouTube/YouTube RTMPS as the service and follow the current connection prompts. Interface labels can change, so use the current OBS and YouTube screens if they differ from a guide.

Treat the stream key as a password: enter the current key from YouTube Live Control Room in the encoder, and do not publish or share it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

Match codec, frame rate, keyframes, and color

  • Protocol: RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps. For mostly static images, 30 fps is a reasonable starting choice, not a YouTube requirement.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four.
  • SDR output: Rec. 709 color space and square pixels.
  • Stereo audio, if used: AAC or MP3 is accepted; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.

Pick a bitrate your connection can sustain

The following are YouTube encoder recommendations, not independent performance measurements. YouTube’s page was checked on 2026-10-03; consult its current table because recommendations can change.

Output AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. Do not choose a bitrate solely because it appears in the table: YouTube advises testing the available upload connection and selecting a quality that remains reliable. Its full resolution and frame-rate table is at YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

3. Start the slideshow stream in OBS

  1. Confirm channel access. Check in YouTube Studio that live streaming is enabled and that Live Control Room accepts the intended broadcast configuration. Eligibility and interface steps can change.
  2. Load the video. In OBS, add a media source for the rendered slideshow video, or use the playback/capture method appropriate to your setup. Enable looping for the video source and verify it returns to the first image as expected.
  3. Set the scene and output. Use the selected canvas and frame rate; configure the codec, CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval described above. Ensure the scene contains no desktop elements or controls that should not appear in public playback.
  4. Connect to YouTube. Select the YouTube RTMPS service and enter or select the stream key shown in the current Live Control Room workflow. Keep the key private.
  5. Run a realistic test. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test broadcast if available, and inspect the YouTube preview and status feedback. Test the intended video and audio, not just a blank scene.
  6. Go live and monitor. Start the stream in OBS, then confirm the broadcast is live in YouTube Studio and inspect the public playback at the intended viewer quality. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers.

4. Preflight and 24/7 operations

Before committing to an all-day broadcast

  • Watch the complete slideshow, including the first-to-last loop transition.
  • Verify framing, image quality, titles, and audio in the stream preview.
  • Run a speed test and a realistic preflight with the intended encoder settings; monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • Check for buffering, dropped frames, unintended silence or sound, and incorrect framing.
  • Plan how the computer and internet connection will remain available, and how someone will notice and respond if the encoder or connection fails.

There is no established minimum computer specification for a 24/7 slideshow stream in the sources cited here. The machine needs to handle your chosen output and workflow reliably; test the actual setup rather than assuming a particular computer model is required. A local OBS stream depends on the encoder machine and connection staying available, so unattended operation needs an operational plan.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Service selection, current stream key, and connection workflow Confirm YouTube RTMPS is selected, recheck the key in Live Control Room, and keep it private. Follow the current OBS/YouTube prompts.
Buffering or dropped frames Whether upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate Run a speed test, lower output quality or bitrate if needed, then repeat a realistic test and check YouTube stream health.
Black bars, cropping, or unreadable text Canvas aspect ratio, image scaling, and source framing Review the rendered video and OBS preview; adjust the canvas or image fit and re-export if needed.
The slideshow stops or does not return to its first image Media-source loop setting and the rendered file’s end Enable looping for the source and test the end-to-start transition before relaunching.
Unexpected silence or sound Audio in the rendered file and encoder audio configuration Check the video itself and the live preview; remove unintended audio or correct the intended audio path.

5. Copyright and content checks

Use images, music, and narration that you have permission to broadcast. A stream can run technically while still raising rights or channel-policy issues; an encoder setting does not grant permission to use someone else’s material. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and your rights for every asset before broadcasting. A slideshow’s continuous or repeated format does not by itself establish that the underlying material is permitted or suitable for a channel.

6. RTMPS or HLS?

For a routine slideshow sent from OBS, RTMPS is the simpler documented route. HLS is a separate, more specialized ingest option that YouTube describes for premium content where high quality and resolution matter more than latency. It requires muxed audio/video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, and media playlists with short segments sent to the HLS endpoint. Those requirements matter when configuring an encoder specifically for YouTube HLS ingestion; they are not a local slideshow file format.

Protocol references: YouTube RTMPS ingestion and YouTube HLS ingestion. For the OBS workflow, see the OBS Project’s YouTube setup guide; its community-maintained interface instructions may drift over time.
