FFmpeg can loop a video file and encode it with Intel Quick Sync, then publish it to YouTube over RTMPS. The core input option is -stream_loop -1; the encoder is typically h264_qsv. But looping is not the same as reliable 24/7 operation: your Intel graphics, FFmpeg build, drivers, network, host supervision and YouTube stream health all matter.
What you need before you start
Quick Sync is Intel’s hardware video media capability. FFmpeg exposes it through QSV encoders such as h264_qsv. It is not enough to have a processor with “Intel” in its name: the system needs a supported Intel graphics path, processor graphics enabled, compatible drivers and runtime, and an FFmpeg build that includes the relevant support. Intel describes oneVPL as the forward path for newer Intel GPU media features; the dispatcher chooses an implementation appropriate to newer or legacy hardware. Check your actual system rather than assuming support from a processor family name. Intel’s FFmpeg and oneVPL overview
- A computer with Quick Sync-capable Intel graphics enabled. Intel says disabling integrated graphics can disable Quick Sync, including on systems that also have a non-Intel discrete GPU. Check firmware settings and confirm the operating system can see the iGPU. Intel support article, last reviewed September 4, 2024
- An FFmpeg installation whose build and runtime expose QSV. On Linux, the graphics media stack can involve the media driver, libva, Media SDK and oneVPL; package and driver versions vary. Intel Graphics Media Stack overview
- A video file with the audio and video streams you intend to broadcast, and enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
- A YouTube live stream set up in YouTube Studio, with its ingest server and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a published command, share it, or expose it in logs or screenshots.
Before relying on a particular PC or mini PC, verify its exact codec, resolution and frame-rate support, operating system, driver and firmware. No specific retail model can be assumed to provide identical QSV capabilities.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube currently lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video ingest choices, at frame rates up to 60 fps. Its live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to and through Google’s servers. YouTube live encoder settings

For a broadly compatible starting point, H.264 is a practical choice: YouTube publishes H.264 bitrate recommendations and FFmpeg documents the h264_qsv encoder. That is a compatibility-oriented starting point, not a claim that H.264 produces better quality than other codecs on your hardware.
| Output target | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | Approximate keyframe interval at the target frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | 60 frames for two seconds at 30 fps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | 60 frames for two seconds at 30 fps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | 120 frames for two seconds at 60 fps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended | 120 frames for two seconds at 60 fps |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommendations on its live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026; they are not measured results for a particular Quick Sync device, connection or video. Pick a rate your sustained upload connection can support reliably, and test with media containing representative motion and audio. The keyframe frame counts above translate YouTube’s two-second interval into frames at the named frame rate; if you change frame rate, recalculate the count. YouTube also lists ordinary SDR settings including Rec. 709, 8-bit, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Use only settings supported by your encoder and appropriate to your content.

Build and test the FFmpeg command
This is an illustrative command template, not a tested command or a guarantee that every FFmpeg build, QSV runtime, source file and YouTube endpoint will work unchanged. Replace each angle-bracketed value, use the RTMPS server shown for your YouTube stream, and keep the actual stream key private.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v h264_qsv -b:v <chosen-bitrate> -g <keyframe-interval-in-frames>
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<youtube-ingest-server>/<stream-key>"
- Confirm QSV is available. Check that your installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder you plan to use, and confirm the operating system, driver and runtime can access Intel graphics. If FFmpeg reports that
h264_qsvis unknown, the installed build does not expose that encoder; resolve the build or runtime issue before configuring the stream. - Set up YouTube ingest. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio and copy the displayed RTMPS ingest server and stream key into your local command or a protected configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Do not reuse a key in a public example.
- Set the input and looping options. Replace
input.mp4with your file.-stream_loop -1is an input option and belongs before-i; it asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely.-repaces file playout in real time rather than sending the file as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents these command-line options in its CLI documentation. - Map the streams deliberately.
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if one exists; the trailing?makes that map optional, so a silent video does not fail just because it has no audio stream. If the file has multiple audio tracks, choose the one you have the rights and intention to broadcast. - Choose a bitrate and keyframe interval. Replace
<chosen-bitrate>with a value appropriate to the selected resolution, frame rate and sustainable upload capacity. Set-gto the number of frames in roughly two seconds at the output frame rate—for example, 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. These examples depend on actually outputting at those frame rates. Configure CBR where supported by your QSV encoder and build; QSV options and accepted values can vary, so check the installed encoder’s help and validate the resulting stream. - Confirm audio and output compatibility. The template encodes audio as AAC at 128 Kbps, matching YouTube’s listed stereo audio rate, but it does not explicitly force a channel layout or sample rate. Verify the produced audio settings and set supported options if your source or target requires adjustment. The output muxer is FLV, with the RTMPS ingest address supplied for the stream.
- Run a private preflight before depending on it. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and bitrate; inspect YouTube’s stream-health information; and test the actual video, including motion and sound. Change settings only after confirming which part of the chain is failing.
FFmpeg’s hardware-acceleration documentation notes that the QSV accelerated transcode path requires decoder and encoder support and no filters. If you need scaling, overlays or other filters, do not assume the no-copy path still applies. Configure a suitable hardware device and hardware-frame flow, or use a supported conversion path, and validate it with your installed FFmpeg and driver. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Make the stream operate continuously
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input; it does not keep FFmpeg, the host, the network or YouTube available indefinitely. A 24/7 deployment needs separate process and host supervision, useful logs, alerts or regular health checks, and a recovery plan for encoder errors, network interruptions, reboots and source-file problems. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it. The cited guidance does not establish a quantified uptime, CPU reduction, quality advantage or failure rate for this exact Quick Sync-to-YouTube workflow.
- Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager that can report failures and restart the process. Decide how you will avoid endless restart loops if the input, key or encoder configuration is invalid.
- Keep logs accessible and check both the FFmpeg process and YouTube stream health. A process that is still running does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Test recovery deliberately: stop and restart the process, interrupt the network in a controlled test, and confirm what the host and YouTube do afterward. Do not infer that a successful initial connection proves automatic publishing reconnection.
- FFmpeg documents reconnection options for particular network-input situations, including network errors and streamed inputs. Those options do not establish automatic reconnection for an RTMP publishing output. Build and test output recovery separately. FFmpeg protocol options
- Check that the source remains readable and loops cleanly, and that its audio and video do not drift or fail at the loop boundary.
Rights and channel suitability matter too
A technically valid stream is not permission to rebroadcast its contents. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check that your permission covers continuous public live broadcasting. Music, game footage, cutscenes, commentary and other material can have rights holders beyond the person who uploaded a file. Do not assume that crediting a creator or labeling a stream as a loop grants permission. YouTube’s live encoder settings explain ingest configuration, not whether a particular video is lawful to use or eligible for monetization; check the rights and YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content before going live.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg says h264_qsv is unavailable |
The installed build does not expose the QSV encoder, or the expected runtime path is missing. | Verify the FFmpeg build, driver and media runtime; confirm the operating system sees enabled Intel graphics. Do not assume a CPU family name proves QSV support. |
| Encoder initialization fails | The iGPU may be disabled or inaccessible, or the source format, dimensions, encoder options or driver/runtime combination may not be supported. | Check firmware and device visibility, inspect the actual input properties, and validate the installed encoder’s accepted options. Test a simpler source/configuration before adding filters. |
| YouTube reports a poor connection or unstable stream | The chosen bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the network may be losing service. | Choose a lower supported output target or bitrate, test using the same connection and representative media, and monitor YouTube stream health. A speed result alone does not establish sustained reliability. |
| YouTube rejects the stream or reports ingest trouble | The server, key, protocol or encoder settings may not match the configured stream. | Recheck the ingest details in YouTube Studio, use its RTMPS endpoint, confirm the key is current and private, and verify codec, frame rate, keyframe interval and bitrate. |
| Audio is missing or the file has no audio stream | The source may be silent, use a different audio track, or lack the first audio stream. | The optional audio map lets a video-only file continue without audio. For files with multiple tracks, select the intended track explicitly and confirm it is included in the output. |
| Stream stops after a disconnect or host restart | Infinite input looping does not supervise the process or guarantee reconnection after an output failure. | Use host-level supervision and logging, then test a restart and network interruption. Verify actual recovery through YouTube rather than assuming input-loop or network-input options reconnect a publishing output. |
| Adding a filter breaks or slows the QSV path | Filters may require a different hardware-frame or conversion flow than the no-filter accelerated path. | Configure a supported device and frame flow or a supported conversion route, then test the complete filtered pipeline with the installed FFmpeg and drivers. |
Or let it run in the cloud
