Short answer: In YouTube’s documented creator workflow, you use the stream URL and key provided in Live Control Room; the reviewed public guidance does not describe a creator-facing geographic region selector or a rule to choose the nearest server. For fewer interruptions, start by checking your upload capacity, encoder settings, and connection to the supplied endpoint. If YouTube or your workflow gives you more than one valid endpoint, compare them under consistent test conditions rather than assuming the geographically closest one will work best.
Does YouTube let you choose an RTMP server region?
YouTube Help’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” instructs creators to copy the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room and enter them in their encoder. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes primary and backup ingestion addresses, including RTMPS address fields. The reviewed public materials do not document a creator-selected geographic region or a published “choose the nearest region” rule. That is a statement about the documentation reviewed, not about YouTube’s undocumented internal routing.
Use the URL supplied for your stream rather than an ingest hostname copied from an old tutorial. If your workflow exposes multiple valid addresses, treat testing them as a troubleshooting experiment—not as a guaranteed way to reduce interruptions.
What to check before changing endpoints
Confirm the connection has enough upload capacity
Measure outbound upload capacity while the network is under conditions similar to the live event. YouTube Help’s “Streaming tips” says total streaming bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% extra capacity. Other people or devices sharing a household or office connection can consume that headroom. YouTube also warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a streaming bitrate that fits the capacity actually available to the encoder. A higher bitrate does not make an unstable uplink more reliable. If Wi-Fi appears to be the local weak point, test over wired Ethernet; a cable cannot fix congestion farther along the ISP route or select an ingest region.
Match protocol and URL
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. If you select RTMPS in the encoder, use the RTMPS URL provided for the stream. Google’s “Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS” specifies port 443 and correct ingestion-hostname SNI handling. A mismatch in protocol, host name, port, or TLS configuration can cause SSL errors or timeouts; check these before attributing a connection failure to geography.

Set bitrate and encoding for the real network
YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” lists recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. Use those recommendations as a starting point, then make sure the selected bitrate remains within your measured upload capacity with headroom. Resolution and frame rate affect the bandwidth required; selecting a higher setting solely to improve picture quality can make an already constrained connection less dependable.
Test the complete stream before going live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or open the stream and copy its current Stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Do not assume an address from a previous event or an old guide is still the right one.
- Use the intended encoder settings. Match the encoder protocol to the supplied URL, then set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate for the content and available upload capacity. Keep those settings consistent when comparing endpoints.
- Run an event-like test. Send content with similar motion and audio to what you plan to stream. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and monitor the encoder while it is transmitting.
- Keep the test conditions comparable. If there are multiple valid endpoint options, test each with the same encoder configuration and similar network load. Compare packet loss, latency variation, disconnects or resets, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health feedback over representative sessions.
- Test backup failover if you rely on it. YouTube’s “Streaming tips” recommends confirming player rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Do this before an event, not during one. A backup address is useful only if the complete backup path has been configured and tested.
How to compare valid endpoints
There is no universal best YouTube ingest region established by the reviewed public documentation. A geographically nearer endpoint might not produce a better route from your ISP, and a lower latency measurement alone does not prove fewer interruptions. Evaluate the result for your location, ISP, time of day, and route.

- Record packet loss and latency variation, not just a single latency reading.
- Note connection resets, encoder dropped frames, and Live Control Room health messages.
- Repeat tests under similar network load and for long enough to reveal intermittent trouble.
- Prefer the endpoint that performs consistently in your tests; do not treat one short successful run as a guarantee.
When RTMPS or HLS is the issue
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted RTMP option. If it fails to connect, verify the URL, protocol, port 443, ingestion host name/SNI, and TLS configuration before changing bitrate or trying unrelated addresses.
HLS is a separate ingest option, not a way to select a geographic region. YouTube’s “Set up an HLS stream” describes an HTTPS-based segmented workflow and notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends media segments. Consider it only when its capabilities fit your use case and the latency tradeoff is acceptable.

Troubleshoot interruptions in a useful order
- Encoder cannot connect or reports SSL/TLS errors: Re-copy the current URL from Live Control Room. Confirm the encoder protocol matches it, and for RTMPS check port 443 and hostname/SNI handling.
- Stream starts, then drops or buffers: Check upload capacity during the failure, competing network traffic, and whether the bitrate exceeds available capacity. Reduce bitrate or other bandwidth demand if needed, then retest.
- Encoder reports dropped frames: Check the local network path and encoder load, then run another test using the same settings and a more stable connection. Compare stream-health messages rather than assuming an endpoint region is responsible.
- Only Wi-Fi tests are unstable: Try wired Ethernet to determine whether the local wireless link is contributing. This will not correct ISP-side congestion or guarantee a better route.
- Backup does not take over: Verify the backup encoder or ingestion address is actually configured and repeat the failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
