How to Match FFmpeg Output Frame Rate to a YouTube Playlist Source

Inspect the actual source cadence before choosing an FFmpeg frame rate. Learn when to preserve it, convert with the fps filter, or avoid using -r as a metadata fix.

Use the frame rate at which the source was recorded or produced—not a rate guessed from a YouTube playlist entry. Check the actual source file first. If you need constant-frame-rate output, FFmpeg’s fps filter converts the cadence by duplicating or dropping frames; output -r is not a universal way to change frame rate, especially when streamcopying.

Which frame rate should you use?

YouTube recommends encoding and uploading recorded content at the same frame rate it was recorded. Common upload rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates are acceptable too. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also lists 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps as less common examples. These are examples, not a requirement to convert every video to one of them. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings provide the matching-rate guidance.

A playlist listing alone cannot tell you the original recording cadence. YouTube may transcode uploads, so a copy obtained from YouTube is not guaranteed to preserve every property of the original. When possible, inspect the original file or production master and use its recording context alongside the file’s timestamps.

Inspect the source file with ffprobe

Run this against the actual file you intend to process:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=avg_frame_rate,r_frame_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4

The output reports two rate fields. They may differ, particularly for variable-frame-rate material, because container and stream metadata do not always summarize timestamp behavior in the same way. Do not choose one blindly if the values conflict. Consider the source’s recording or export settings and whether its presentation timestamps show a variable cadence.

  • Recorded/source rate: the cadence at which images were captured or produced. When known, this is YouTube’s recommended upload target.
  • Reported nominal or average rate: metadata values that can help describe a stream but may not fully characterize variable-rate timing.
  • Timestamp behavior: the actual timing attached to frames. It matters when deciding whether a file is variable frame rate or whether a reported rate is a safe basis for conversion.

Decide whether conversion is necessary

If your source already has the intended cadence and your edit preserves its timing, avoid gratuitous frame-rate conversion. Matching the source means preserving the cadence established by the recording and timestamps—not setting an arbitrary customary value such as 30 fps or rewriting a rate label.

Convert only when your delivery workflow calls for a particular constant cadence, or when you have a clear compatibility or editing reason. Changing cadence resamples motion: frames may be repeated or removed, and the visual result depends on the source rate, target rate, and content. Review motion for judder or repeated frames rather than assuming a new rate is visually neutral.

Convert to a constant frame rate with the fps filter

For example, to produce constant-rate output at 30000/1001 fps:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30000/1001" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a copy output.mp4

Replace 30000/1001 with the measured or deliberately selected rational target rate. This command is an example, not a universal encoding preset: choose video codec, quality, audio handling, and container for your project. The fps filter uses presentation timestamps to copy, duplicate, or drop frames and creates new output timestamps to establish a constant cadence. See the FFmpeg fps filter documentation.

If the source is variable frame rate, a constant-rate conversion necessarily samples its motion onto a regular cadence. Check the start and end of the result, as well as sections with fast movement, for unwanted judder, freezes, or repeated frames.

Why -r is not the same as the fps filter

The effect of output -r depends on whether FFmpeg is encoding video or streamcopying it. During encoding, it can duplicate or drop frames to reach a constant output rate. During streamcopy, it signals a frame rate to the muxer; it does not change the frame data. If the signaled rate conflicts with the rate implied by packet timestamps, the result can be invalid or misleading. FFmpeg documents this distinction in its documentation change for -r.

Workflow What happens Use when
Encode with output -r Frames may be duplicated or dropped to achieve a constant output rate. You intend to encode at a chosen constant rate and understand the resulting resampling.
Streamcopy with output -r The muxer is signaled with a rate; frame data is not resampled. Only when the rate signal is appropriate for the timestamps. Do not use it as a metadata-only fix for a mismatch.
Encode with -vf fps=... The filter resamples frames based on presentation timestamps and creates output timestamps for the chosen cadence. You explicitly need constant-frame-rate output.

Use those reported values as a check, not the only test. Confirm that the duration remains sensible and watch motion near the beginning, end, and any demanding scene. If the output’s timing or visible cadence is wrong, revisit the chosen target and conversion method rather than merely changing a reported rate.
