Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a systemd .timer to start a matching .service on a calendar, then have that service run a script that edits the playlist through the OAuth-authorized YouTube Data API. The timer handles when the job runs; the script handles what changes. This guide covers the unit files, API operations, credentials, testing, and common failure points.
Plan the change before scheduling it
Decide whether the job will add a video, move an existing item, or remove an item, and whether it should run at a wall-clock time or after an elapsed interval. YouTube edits playlist items, not videos directly: an item’s playlist-item ID is distinct from the video’s ID. Writes require OAuth authorization; an API key alone is not the documented authorization for these operations. See Google’s playlist implementation guide and OAuth 2.0 guide.
- Insert: provide the playlist ID and the video resource ID. A chosen insertion position requires the playlist to use manual ordering.
- Update position: find the playlist item and retain its playlist-item ID, then update its position and relevant resource details. Positions are zero-based.
- Delete: pass the playlist-item ID, not the video ID.
Some system playlists, including the uploaded-videos playlist, do not support these operations. For updates, preserve every mutable value in the parts you submit: omitted existing values may be deleted. Check the relevant update reference, insert reference, and YouTube Data API reference for current request details and restrictions.
Separate the timer from the playlist script
Keep the API work in a script that you can run and diagnose independently. The service unit invokes that script; the timer activates the service. By default, a timer activates a same-named service, though its Unit= setting can name a different unit explicitly.

Timer unit
[Unit]
Description=Schedule YouTube playlist change
[Timer]
OnCalendar=Mon..Fri 09:00
Persistent=true
Unit=youtube-playlist-change.service
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
This example requests activation on weekdays at 09:00 according to the host’s local calendar interpretation. Confirm the expression and timezone on the machine that will run it. Persistent=true is useful for calendar timers: if the host was inactive when an event was due, systemd triggers the missed event when the timer becomes active again. It does not replay every missed occurrence as a backlog.
Calendar timers are appropriate for a specified day and time. For elapsed-interval jobs, use a monotonic timer directive instead; check the installed systemd.timer(5) manual for exact syntax and behavior. The upstream manual documents timer triggers, persistence, and randomized delay; it is a moving document, and available directives can vary by systemd release. Randomized delay can spread similar jobs across an interval but also delays the next determined elapse.

Choose the correct YouTube API operation
Add a video
Call playlistItems.insert with a snippet containing the target playlistId and a resourceId that identifies the YouTube video. The request requires OAuth authorization. If you supply a position, the playlist must use manual ordering; omit it if the playlist’s ordering mode does not permit a chosen position. The official method page currently documents a quota cost of 50 units for an insert call; verify current quota documentation before relying on that figure for a high-frequency job.
Move an existing item
- List the playlist’s items and find the intended entry. Keep its playlist-item
id; do not substitute the video’s ID. - Call
playlistItems.update, supplying the playlist ID, the resource ID identifying the video, and the desiredsnippet.position. Positions start at zero. - Include the mutable fields needed in the selected
part. An update can remove existing values omitted from the part being written, so do not send a partial resource without checking the API’s update semantics.
The update requires OAuth authorization. Its method page currently documents a 50-unit quota cost per call; check current guidance if the job will run frequently.

Remove an item
Call playlistItems.delete using the playlist-item ID. First confirm that the item still exists in the intended playlist; IDs identify different things, and using a video ID where the API expects a playlist-item ID will not target the item correctly.
Configure and enable the schedule
- Prepare the script and OAuth access. Make the script executable, and arrange for the service’s user to access valid OAuth credentials at runtime. The official documentation establishes the OAuth requirement, but it does not prescribe a Linux token-storage or unattended refresh strategy. Choose and protect a method suitable for your host and account.
- Install both units. Put the service and timer in the appropriate system or user unit location. Make sure the service can access its script, configuration, and credentials.
- Validate the calendar expression. Use the installed systemd calendar verification facility, such as
systemd-analyze calendar 'Mon..Fri 09:00', where available. Confirm the reported next elapse matches the intended schedule and timezone. - Reload unit definitions. For a system-level setup, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. For a user-level setup, usesystemctl --user daemon-reload. - Run the service once manually. Start the service directly before enabling the timer. Verify the API result and the playlist itself; a successful process exit should mean the intended change actually succeeded.
- Enable and inspect the timer. For a system-level timer, run
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist-change.timer. For a user-level timer, usesystemctl --user enable --now youtube-playlist-change.timer. Inspect its state and next activation with the matchingsystemctl list-timerscommand.
Scheduled services should not be assumed to inherit an interactive shell’s working directory, PATH, or environment. Set the working directory and executable paths explicitly, and define only the environment the job requires. The timer and service syntax and semantics are described in the systemd.timer manual; consult the local systemd.timer(5) page when the host’s release may differ from the upstream document.

Make repeated runs safe and observable
A recurring job can encounter a playlist that has changed since its last run. Before inserting, check whether the intended video is already present. Before moving or deleting, confirm the target item still exists and belongs to the expected playlist. These checks are implementation safeguards, not API guarantees of idempotence.
Have the script log what it attempted and check the API response. Exit unsuccessfully on authorization, quota, network, or API errors so systemd records a failed service run instead of a misleading success. Review service logs with the relevant system journal command, for example journalctl -u youtube-playlist-change.service for a system service or journalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-change.service for a user service.
Troubleshoot missed or incorrect changes
- The timer is active but the playlist did not change: inspect the service result and logs. A timer only activates the unit; it does not validate the script’s API request.
- The script works in a terminal but fails on schedule: check the service’s user, working directory, executable path, environment, and access to OAuth credentials. A scheduled job may not have the same shell environment.
- Authorization fails: confirm the runtime credentials authorize the YouTube account and write operation. An API key by itself is not the documented authorization for playlist writes.
- Insertion at a position is rejected: check that the target playlist uses manual ordering. Also verify it is not a special playlist, such as the uploaded-videos playlist, that disallows the operation.
- An update removes data or fails unexpectedly: inspect the selected
partand include the mutable values that must remain. Do not assume omitted fields are preserved. - Removal or reordering targets nothing: retrieve the playlist item again and use its playlist-item ID rather than the video’s ID. For reordering, verify the item is still present and that the position is zero-based.
- The event runs at the wrong time or not after downtime: verify the calendar expression and host timezone, check the installed systemd version’s semantics, and confirm the timer is enabled.
Persistent=trueapplies to calendar timers and catches up a missed event after the timer becomes active.
Or let it run in the cloud
For scheduled playlist edits, the systemd method above gives you control over API operations and host-side timing. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps looping uploaded videos without a computer running at home, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera capture or automated YouTube playlist editing. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
