Not reliably if the YouTube encoder runs on that VM. A Windows guest update may require a restart, which stops the encoder process and interrupts its feed to YouTube. Scheduling updates can move planned patching outside a broadcast, but it does not guarantee that a reboot will not occur. For continuity during a restart, you need a separate, independently running backup path—and you should test how it behaves with your encoder and YouTube setup.
First identify what is being updated
“Windows updates” can mean updates inside the VM’s guest operating system or maintenance to the Azure physical host. They are different events, with different controls.
Windows guest updates
Guest updates are applied to the operating system inside your VM. Microsoft’s Guest updates and host maintenance overview says Azure does not push Windows Update updates to Windows VMs because customers manage those machines. Windows automatic updates can restart a VM after patches are applied. If the encoder runs as a process in that guest, a restart interrupts it and its outgoing video feed. How quickly the VM recovers varies with circumstances, including host memory size and the recovery methods used.
Azure host maintenance
Host maintenance updates the underlying physical infrastructure, not Windows inside the VM. Microsoft says Azure uses the least disruptive mechanism available for a particular update; depending on the event, a VM may briefly freeze, reboot, or live-migrate to another host. Maintenance notifications and scheduled events can help you learn about platform-initiated events, but they do not keep a guest workload running through a reboot.

What update scheduling can—and cannot—do
Azure Update Manager can schedule recurring updates and configure reboot behavior. Use it to place planned guest patching in a quiet period before or after a broadcast, leaving time to confirm the VM, encoder, and YouTube feed are working before the next live window.
A schedule is a timing control, not a continuous-availability guarantee. Microsoft’s scheduled-patching documentation warns that Windows Update registry settings can cause a reboot even when the schedule specifies Never Reboot. Review the VM’s applicable update and reboot configuration rather than treating that label as proof that the guest cannot restart.

Could hotpatching avoid the interruption?
Sometimes, for a supported configuration and update—but it is not a general setting for every Azure Windows VM. Microsoft describes hotpatching as a way to install updates on new Windows Server Azure Edition VMs without a reboot after installation. Update Manager’s documentation scopes it to supported Windows Server Datacenter: Azure Edition VMs and security updates that do not require a reboot.
Before depending on it, verify that your VM image and configuration are eligible and that the particular update is supported for hotpatching. It does not establish that every update will avoid a restart, so it should not be the only continuity measure for a stream that cannot tolerate interruption.

Why YouTube stream settings do not solve a VM reboot
YouTube’s Live Control Room provides a stream key and stream URL for the encoder. The key lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed; it does not keep the Azure VM or encoder process running when Windows restarts.
YouTube also supports optional auto-start and auto-stop behavior. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation says that when both are enabled, YouTube starts the broadcast when video arrives and ends it about a minute after transmission stops. That describes the broadcast lifecycle; it is not a promise that a particular encoder will reconnect after a reboot, resume the same live event, or give viewers uninterrupted playback.

Plan continuity around the encoder, not just the patch window
- Classify the interruption. Determine whether the risk is guest Windows patching or Azure host maintenance. Use update scheduling for planned guest patching; follow Azure maintenance notifications and scheduled events for platform events.
- Move planned guest updates out of the live window. Schedule patching for a quiet period and allow time to check the VM and stream afterward. Do not assume that a reboot setting or schedule removes all restart risk.
- Decide what interruption you can accept. If a temporary loss of the feed is acceptable, document the recovery steps and test them before relying on them. If the stream must continue during a guest reboot, a single encoder process on that VM is not enough.
- Design a separate backup path if required. Use an independently operating encoder or other separately configured path, and test the chosen encoder and YouTube workflow. Confirm what happens when the primary VM stops, how the backup takes over, and what viewers see. Do not assume automatic failover or seamless playback without verifying it in your actual setup.
Test the failure you are trying to prevent
Before a high-stakes broadcast, rehearse a planned restart outside the live window. Check whether the encoder launches again, whether it reconnects to the intended YouTube live event, whether YouTube starts or ends the broadcast as expected, and how long viewers see an interruption. The official documentation does not establish those recovery details for a specific third-party encoder, so treat them as configuration-specific until tested.
