How to Use Xbox Overlays for Live Streaming

Xbox can’t load browser-source overlays directly. Use a supported cloud studio or route gameplay through a capture card to OBS, with steps and troubleshooting for both.

You can’t add a browser-source overlay directly on an Xbox. To put alerts, chat, a webcam, or graphics on an Xbox stream, either send the broadcast through a cloud streaming studio that adds the overlay or route the Xbox’s HDMI output through a capture card to a PC running OBS or similar software. You do not need a capture card for every overlay setup; it is the PC-production route.

Choose how to add the overlay

Route Best for What you need to know
Cloud studio, such as Streamlabs or Lightstream Starting without a capture card or streaming PC Set up the scene in a browser, then connect the Xbox broadcast through a console route supported by that service. Product names, destinations, features, and eligibility can change, so check the current instructions.
Capture card plus OBS or similar PC software Controlling scenes and sources on a PC Requires a compatible capture card, PC, HDMI connections, and software setup. Confirm compatibility and the resolution, refresh rate, and passthrough you want before buying hardware.
Xbox-to-PC Companion app route Trying PC broadcast software without a capture card Uses the Windows Companion app window as a capture source. Compatibility depends on your Xbox, Windows version, game, and setup.

The steps below reflect product documentation, not hands-on testing; they do not establish comparative latency, image quality, or reliability. The cloud-studio and Xbox menu paths can also differ between Streamlabs products, so do not assume one set of steps applies to every Streamlabs route.

Use a cloud studio without a capture card

Set up the overlay scene

  1. On a phone, tablet, or computer, open the chosen service’s web studio and create a project or scene.
  2. Choose a theme, then add and position the components you want, such as text, alerts, chat, or a webcam. Preview the composition before going live.
  3. Check that the service supports the console-to-service connection and broadcast destination you intend to use. Lightstream is another cloud-studio option described in Xsolla’s documentation; confirm current console destination availability and any plan requirements before following its account steps.

Connect Xbox to Streamlabs

Streamlabs has published different routes for different products. Its April 25, 2025 Streamlabs Studio guide describes connecting through the Twitch app on Xbox: install or open the app, authenticate your Twitch account, and use its Broadcast option. Use the Studio site on a second device to confirm the stream and control scenes. Streamlabs’ June 13, 2026 Console update instead describes enabling cloud broadcasting and selecting Streamlabs at Capture and Share > Live streaming > More options. Check the current Xbox menu and the guide for the exact Streamlabs product you are using; do not combine the two workflows as if they were one route.

For the documented Studio workflow, keep a phone or computer nearby for chat and controls: alerts and chat do not appear on the television screen.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a capture card and OBS

  1. Connect the Xbox’s HDMI output to a compatible capture card, then connect the card to your PC. Follow the card maker’s connection instructions, particularly if you want passthrough to a separate display.
  2. Open OBS or other broadcasting software and add the capture card as a video-capture device.
  3. Add your overlay. For a hosted overlay, copy its URL and add it as an OBS Browser source. Alternatively, add the image, video, text, or alert sources supported by your chosen software.
  4. Arrange gameplay and overlay sources in the scene, then preview the result. Adjust source size and placement so the overlay is visible without obscuring important gameplay.
  5. Start the broadcast from the PC software and check the live output. Choose your destination and verify its current streaming requirements in the relevant service’s instructions.

Xsolla’s overlay documentation gives its editor a default canvas of 1920 x 1080 pixels and instructs users to match the OBS Browser-source width and height to the overlay. That is an editor default, not a required Xbox broadcast resolution.

Try the Companion app as a separate no-card route

Streamlabs also documents connecting Xbox to a PC with the Windows Companion app and selecting the app window as a Game Capture source. Treat this as a compatibility-dependent alternative, not a guarantee that every console, Windows version, or game will work. If it does not capture the gameplay you need, use a supported cloud route or a capture card.

Pick a capture card carefully

A capture card is optional, not a requirement for all Xbox overlays. If you choose the PC route, confirm the card supports your Xbox and PC setup and the resolution, refresh rate, and passthrough you want. The documentation supports the general capture-card workflow but does not validate particular models, so use the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming a card will meet your needs.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different job—keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel 24/7—StreamNeo is a cloud service, not an Xbox overlay studio. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from an Xbox camera or add overlays to an Xbox gameplay broadcast.

Check copyright and platform rules before going live

An overlay does not grant permission to use music, video, or other copyrighted material in the broadcast. Check the rights for gameplay audio, background music, and any clips or images you add; consult the relevant platform’s current rules and the rights holder’s terms. A cloud studio or capture card changes how you compose the stream, not whether you have permission to broadcast its content.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The Xbox stream has no overlay: Xbox does not support browser sources on the console itself. Confirm you are sending the broadcast through the cloud studio’s supported route or composing it in PC software.
  • The Streamlabs instructions do not match your menus: The published Studio and Console workflows use different routes. Confirm which product you are using and follow its current guide; on the Console route documented in June 2026, Streamlabs is under Capture and Share > Live streaming > More options.
  • Chat or alerts are missing from the TV: In the documented Streamlabs Studio workflow, those controls and elements are handled on a second device, not displayed on the television.
  • The OBS scene shows no gameplay: Check that the capture card is connected from Xbox HDMI to the card and from the card to the PC, and that OBS has the card selected as a video-capture device. If using the Companion app route, verify that your setup and game are compatible.
  • The overlay is cropped or misaligned: Check the overlay’s canvas dimensions and the Browser-source width and height. Xsolla’s editor default is 1920 x 1080 pixels; match the source to the overlay rather than treating that default as a required stream resolution.
  • The card does not deliver the display mode you want: Recheck its compatibility, passthrough, resolution, and refresh-rate specifications against your console and display before purchase.
