YouTube Jewels are a viewer’s purchased virtual balance; Gifts are digital items viewers redeem with Jewels during eligible livestreams; and Rubies are the units YouTube uses to calculate a qualifying creator’s revenue. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable—and access depends on YouTube’s age, location, channel, and stream rules.
Jewels, Gifts, and Rubies: what each means
- Jewels: Virtual items viewers buy through YouTube’s website or mobile apps, where available.
- Gifts: Digital items viewers send during eligible livestreams by redeeming Jewels. They can appear over the stream and may include illustrations, interactive effects, limited-time designs, or repeatable gift sequences called combos. The available designs can change.
- Rubies: The units YouTube credits to eligible creators when viewers redeem Jewels for Gifts. Rubies are used in YouTube’s creator revenue calculation; they are not the viewer’s balance.
YouTube’s current creator policy says every 2 Jewels redeemed for Gifts earn 1 Ruby. It says the creator’s net revenue is calculated at $0.01 per Ruby. This is YouTube’s stated calculation, not a promise of typical earnings or a guarantee of a particular payment. Rubies are paid with other YouTube Partner Program earnings. Who can buy Jewels and send Gifts?
Viewers must be signed in, at least 18 years old, and located in a country or territory where Jewels are available. YouTube lists its website and mobile apps as purchase surfaces. Which creators can earn from Gifts?
Creators need to be in an eligible location, participate in the YouTube Partner Program, and accept and meet the requirements of the Virtual Items Module in YouTube Studio. They must also be at least 18 and have verified AdSense identity. Eligible access appears in the Earn hub in YouTube Studio, but meeting these conditions does not mean Gifts will be available for every stream. Which livestreams support Gifts?
YouTube’s help materials describe Gifts on eligible vertical and horizontal livestreams, but format and device support can change as features roll out. A TeamYouTube announcement dated April 21, 2026 said Gifts were expanding to horizontal livestreams on mobile. It also said Gifts would replace Super Stickers on horizontal streams for channels with Gifts enabled, with desktop support planned for later in 2026. What viewers should know before spending
Spending limits and balance
YouTube’s viewer policy, accessed October 3, 2026, states a maximum combined Jewels spend of $2,000 USD per day and $8,000 USD per week, plus a maximum available balance of 120,000 Jewels. Visibility when you send a Gift
YouTube may show the sender’s username and profile photo publicly in the stream, including in chat and the pinned area. Check your account identity and privacy preferences before sending a Gift if you do not want those details displayed. YouTube Virtual items policy for viewers

Gifts are not a direct payment
YouTube’s viewer policy says Jewels are “not intended, and [are] prohibited from being used, as a means to send a payment or monetary value to creators.” The viewer buys Jewels and redeems them for Gifts; the creator’s earnings are handled separately under YouTube’s creator program and Ruby calculation. What to check if you cannot use or enable Gifts
- No Gifts icon as a viewer: Check whether you are signed in, at least 18, in a supported location, and watching an eligible livestream.
- Gifts are missing from a creator’s stream: Check stream visibility and audience settings, age restriction, fundraiser status, and whether live chat or comments are on. Confirm Gifts are enabled for the channel and available in the current format and device.
- Gifts do not appear in streaming software: YouTube says creators can use supported third-party streaming software for vertical streams, but Gifts may not always be visible there. - Creator access is unavailable: Check the channel’s status in the YouTube Studio Earn hub, eligible location, Partner Program participation, Virtual Items Module requirements, age, and AdSense identity verification.
