The concat demuxer treats compatible files as one continuous input; it does not convert mismatched clips or build a changing schedule for you. Test the transitions and YouTube’s current ingest settings before leaving the stream unattended.
What a concat playlist does—and what it does not
An FFmpeg concat file is a plain-text list that specifies the order of media files. The concat demuxer presents those files as a virtual input, so FFmpeg can process them sequentially. With -stream_loop -1, it repeats that finite input indefinitely.
This is a fixed playlist: it will not automatically discover new files, reorder items, or provide a live scheduling interface. If you change the playlist, edit the text file and restart or otherwise reconfigure the FFmpeg process.
Prepare and check the video files
Check compatibility before concatenating
For concat demuxing, the files need matching stream layouts: the same streams, with compatible codecs and time bases. Compare the number and types of audio and video streams as well as their codecs and time bases. A command that works for one set of files may fail or produce rough transitions with another.

The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one. Incorrect duration metadata can therefore cause timing artifacts at transitions. Inspect the files and their reported durations first; use a playlist duration directive only when you know a sound duration value. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose demuxing or filtering

When the clips differ materially, standardize them first or use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the concat filter for concatenation where re-encoding is required. Pre-transcoding a static playlist to matching properties can help, but it is not a guarantee that every source file will concatenate cleanly.
Create the concat file

Add one
filedirective per video, in the order you want it to play. For example, with all files in the same directory:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'segment-01.mp4' file 'segment-02.mp4' file 'segment-03.mp4' -
Save the file as plain text, not as a word-processing document. Confirm that each path resolves from the playlist’s location.
By default, the concat demuxer’s safe-path mode is enabled. Relative paths made from portable characters are the simplest option. If a trusted playlist genuinely needs paths that the default rejects, -safe 0 permits arbitrary filenames; use it only for a playlist you control because it relaxes checks on paths and directives. Loop the playlist into YouTube Live
Configure the YouTube broadcast first
Create or select the intended live broadcast in YouTube Studio and obtain its stream key and ingest details from the live control room. Use the current settings shown for your account rather than copying a codec or bitrate recipe from an old forum post. The exact appropriate video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio parameters, and ingest endpoint depend on the current platform guidance and your intended output.

The official YouTube Live recommendations were not available in the source set for this article, so this command deliberately does not prescribe fixed ingest values. Check current YouTube Help and the live console before choosing output parameters. Community examples of FFmpeg sending FLV to an RTMP endpoint are examples, not a universal specification.
Run FFmpeg
For compatible input files, this is the command shape:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://INGEST_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY'Replace the endpoint and stream key with the values for your broadcast, and replace or confirm the output encoding settings against current YouTube guidance and the capabilities of your installed FFmpeg build. This is a template, not a tested, universally valid recipe.
-reand-stream_loop -1are input options, so they appear before the corresponding-i playlist.ffconcat.-f concatselects the concat demuxer. The list is repeated indefinitely by-stream_loop -1.- The example maps the first available video and audio streams by default. If your files have unusual or multiple streams, explicitly select the intended streams and verify that the output includes the audio and video you expect.
-f flvis an output format used in community RTMP examples, not a substitute for checking YouTube’s current account-specific ingest settings.
-re can be useful when a file input would otherwise be read faster than real time. Validate the behavior with your actual source files and FFmpeg version. Keep the stream key secret: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or a public repository.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

Start with a short run and watch FFmpeg’s console output for input, timestamp, or encoding errors.

Check YouTube Studio’s live console to confirm it receives a usable stream and that the selected broadcast is receiving the expected audio and video.

Watch at least one transition between files. Check for a pause, black frames, audio gaps, or a timing jump, then inspect stream compatibility and duration metadata if a transition is irregular.

Confirm that the playlist returns to its first item after the final file and continues as expected. Do not assume a successful start proves that the loop or every transition is clean.

Common problems and fixes

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
FFmpeg only sends the media you provide; it does not grant permission to use it. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other material, including any third-party elements. Repeatedly broadcasting a playlist also does not by itself establish that the channel complies with YouTube’s policies or is eligible for monetization. Review the current rules that apply to your channel and content in YouTube Help; do not treat a technically successful stream as a policy approval.
