Your live show is part of a wider video channel
YouTube makes sense when you want a live broadcast to coexist with regular uploads and potentially become a replay or highlight video. That gives you a documented way to reuse a broadcast on the same channel; it does not guarantee that the replay will reach more people.
You want YouTube’s mix of live monetization features
Eligible creators may monetize live streams through ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. When Twitch is the better fit
You want to build around live community
Twitch’s Affiliate tools center on subscriptions, Bits and Cheering, emotes and community settings. That can suit a creator whose main product is the live session and its recurring interaction with viewers. The feature list alone does not show that Twitch will deliver a larger audience.
You want a stated activity-based Affiliate route
Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ lists these achievements: 25 followers, four hours streamed, four different stream days, and an average of three viewers on four stream days during the last 30 days. You must also complete onboarding, and two-factor authentication is required. These are program requirements—not a prediction of how quickly you will qualify or earn money. Twitch says its Creator Profile is available globally to Partners and Affiliates and lets creators present channel, audience and sponsorship-interest information to brands and agencies. Compare monetization without treating it as a paycheck forecast
YouTube Partner Program eligibility
The reviewed YouTube Partner Program overview lists a route of 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance: policy and account requirements apply, and YouTube reviews the channel. The page notes updates beginning February 1, 2027, so check the current page and YouTube Studio before relying on these thresholds. Ad revenue is conditional on both platforms
YouTube says eligible, monetized live streams can use pre-roll, display and mid-roll ads, but a slot is not guaranteed to serve. Twitch says Affiliates can earn up to 55% net ad revenue when they run at least three minutes of ads per hour. That is a conditional maximum, not a general rate or a promise of earnings. There is no like-for-like income comparison here
The platform documentation describes different programs, eligibility rules and monetization tools; it does not provide a comparable estimate of typical creator income, audience reach, growth rate or time to success. Treat revenue as uncertain and dependent on eligibility, audience, content and viewer behavior—not a reason to assume one platform will pay more.

How to choose for your channel
- Start with your content format. If a stream is one part of a channel built around uploads and replayable videos, lean toward YouTube. If the live session and ongoing community interaction are the core, consider Twitch.
- Follow your audience. Ask where the people you want to reach already watch. The published feature lists do not settle which service will help a new channel grow faster.
- Check eligibility before planning income. Review the current setup, regional availability and monetization requirements in each platform’s dashboard and help pages. Do not equate YouTube’s review-based thresholds with Twitch’s Affiliate activity achievements.
- Pick a schedule you can sustain. Twitch’s listed Affiliate achievements include hours and different stream days within a 30-day period. Regardless of platform, choose a schedule you can keep rather than one that assumes rapid growth.
- Run a fair trial. If you are undecided, stream a consistent format on one platform long enough to assess your own workflow and audience response. Track practical measures that matter to you—such as repeat chatters, returning viewers and whether you can produce follow-up content—without treating a short test as proof of platform-wide reach.
Keep a YouTube channel live around the clock
If your decision is YouTube and the goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 stream, there are two distinct approaches: run the stream yourself or use a cloud service.
