To restart a multi-file playlist in an OBS-produced YouTube livestream, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. For one file, use an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. These controls repeat what your encoder sends; YouTube’s player Loop button only repeats playback for an individual viewer.
Choose the loop setting for your setup
| What you need to repeat | OBS or YouTube control | What it repeats |
|---|---|---|
| Several local media files in the livestream | OBS VLC Video source → Loop Playlist | Restarts the source after it reaches the end of its media list. |
| One local file in the livestream | OBS Media Source → Loop | Replays that file when playback finishes. |
| A playlist watched in YouTube | YouTube player playlist → Loop | Repeats playback for that viewer; it does not change the files being sent by OBS. |
OBS documents VLC Video as the source for a playlist and says Loop Playlist restarts the source when it runs out of media files. Its documented default is On. YouTube’s Loop control is for watching a video or playlist on repeat in YouTube’s player. OBS Media Sources · YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Match their architectures: OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check OBS’s Media Sources requirements.
- Add a VLC Video source to the broadcast scene. In the scene you plan to stream, add a source and choose VLC Video. Unlike Media Source, which handles one local file, VLC Video accepts a playlist of media items.
- Build and order the media list. Add the local video and audio items to the VLC Video playlist and arrange them in the order you want. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want playback order randomized.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Open the source’s properties and make sure Loop Playlist is on. OBS documents this option as on by default, but verify the setting in the source you are actually using.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS offers behavior choices that continue, pause, or stop playback when the source is not visible. If your broadcast switches scenes and you need the playlist to keep advancing, choose a continue-playing behavior rather than the documented default, Stop when not visible, restart when visible.
- Preview the end of the queue before broadcasting. Confirm that the final item transitions back to the first as intended, and check that the media is visible and audible in the scene.
- Start the encoder and finish the YouTube broadcast steps. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and complete the broadcast flow, including Go Live when prompted. Receiving an encoder preview and making the broadcast live are separate stages in YouTube’s production guidance. YouTube live streaming production guide.
Why the queue can still stop or appear not to loop
- The wrong source type is in use: Media Source is for one file; use VLC Video for several playlist items.
- VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC.
- The items play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off if the list should play in a fixed sequence.
- Playback stops after switching scenes: Review Visibility Behaviour. A source set to stop while hidden will not continue through the queue in the background.
- The playlist repeats locally, but the YouTube broadcast is gone: Loop Playlist controls media playback, not the computer, OBS encoder, network connection, or YouTube broadcast connection. Those delivery stages must remain operational independently.
- You see a preview but viewers do not see a live broadcast: Check the Live Control Room flow and complete the required live-start step; an encoder preview alone is not the same as pressing Go Live.
Check content rights before rebroadcasting
Before using recordings, music, gameplay footage, or other media in a livestream, make sure you have the necessary permissions for the uses involved. YouTube’s production guide advises creators to secure clearances for livestreaming, rebroadcasting, and video on demand, and to check whether performance rights cover live use, archived use, or both. Rights depend on the content and the applicable arrangements; a playlist loop does not change them. YouTube live streaming production guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is not only to repeat a queue but also to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
