For a simple playlist of prerecorded videos, OBS is generally easier to set up because its VLC video source offers visible playlist, loop, and shuffle controls. FFmpeg suits people comfortable with command-line options who want scripting and repeatable configuration. Neither tool schedules the YouTube event: create and schedule that in YouTube Studio, then connect the encoder. “Schedule” can mean either arranging playlist playback or setting the event’s date and time, so this guide covers both.
Playlist rotation and event scheduling are separate jobs
An encoder sends audio and video to YouTube. YouTube Studio is where you create a live event, set its title and privacy, choose its date and time, and obtain the stream URL and key for the encoder. YouTube’s instructions describe scheduling a stream in Studio and connecting an encoder with those details: Create a live stream with an encoder.
For a recurring event, YouTube’s Live Streaming API also distinguishes the live stream carrying audio and video from the broadcast resource representing the event. That distinction matters if you automate event creation: managing a video feed and managing its scheduled broadcast are not the same task. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
OBS vs FFmpeg for playlist rotation
| Need | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Build a basic local playlist | Visual setup using a VLC video source; playlist order, loop, and shuffle controls are available. | Configure input and looping with command-line options; more hands-on setup. |
| Best fit | Operators who prefer a graphical interface and want to see and adjust the playlist. | Operators already comfortable with command-line media tools or who want scripts. |
| Automation | Suitable for a straightforward GUI workflow; custom automation may need additional configuration. | Options can be incorporated into scripts, but event scheduling and process supervision still need to be handled. |
| Continuous-operation responsibility | The host, network, OBS process, and recovery plan remain your responsibility. | The host, network, FFmpeg process, and recovery plan remain your responsibility. |
This is a comparison of documented workflows, not a hands-on test or reliability benchmark. Neither application is established here as more stable.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up playlist rotation in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s documented playlist method uses its VLC video source, which is available only when VLC is installed. Check the OBS media sources guide for the current workflow.
- Add a source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Load the media playlist. Add the local video files in the desired order using the source’s playlist controls. Confirm that the files are accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Choose rotation behavior. Enable looping for repeated playback. Use shuffle if you want randomized order rather than a fixed sequence.
- Check the scene before going live. Preview playback and confirm that video and audio behave as intended. The YouTube ingest settings should match the options shown for the scheduled stream; do not assume all protocols or encoder modes are interchangeable.
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Create the live stream, set its event details and date/time, and copy the stream URL and key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel’s stream.
- Start the encoder at the appropriate time. Scheduling the event in Studio does not itself keep the computer or OBS running. For a 24/7 rotation, the host and network must remain available.
Set up looping with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s documented -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely. Its -re option reads input at native frame rate and is equivalent to -readrate 1. These are building blocks, not a complete 24/7 scheduler or an uninterrupted-operation guarantee. Consult the documentation matching your installed FFmpeg version: FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Prepare the media and stream settings. Confirm that your input files can be read by your FFmpeg build and decide how they will be supplied to the process. The exact encoding and output settings depend on the media and the ingest settings YouTube gives your event.
- Configure looping and real-time pacing. Apply
-stream_loop -1to loop the input and-re(or-readrate 1) to pace file input at real-time speed. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option placement and compatibility with your chosen input and output. - Configure the YouTube output. Use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio as the output destination and set the audio/video encoding to match the event’s ingest requirements. Do not expose the key in a public script or log.
- Run and monitor the process. Verify that playback reaches YouTube as expected. For unattended operation, plan how the process will be supervised and restarted if it exits, and how you will detect a failed network connection or an interrupted feed.
- Schedule the broadcast separately. Create the event in YouTube Studio and manage its title, privacy, date/time, and promotion there. FFmpeg’s input loop does not create or schedule the YouTube event.
Which one is easier to schedule?
If “schedule” means arranging the rotation
Choose OBS for a basic playlist: its VLC source exposes playlist order, loop, and shuffle as visible controls. Choose FFmpeg if command-line configuration is already comfortable or you specifically want the setup expressed in scripts. FFmpeg’s flexibility does not remove the need to plan process supervision and recovery.

If “schedule” means setting the YouTube event time
Use YouTube Studio with either encoder. The event’s title, privacy, date and time belong to Studio; OBS or FFmpeg supplies the media feed using the stream URL and key. Follow the current Studio interface and ingest settings for your event.
Plan for long streams, archives, and reliability
A 24/7 stream depends on more than playlist settings: the computer or host must stay available, the process must keep running, and the network must continue carrying the feed. The official documentation describes encoder features but does not establish that either OBS or FFmpeg guarantees uninterrupted service. Arrange monitoring and a recovery plan appropriate to your setup.

YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume a stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived as one video. If a complete archive matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and plan separate recordings or shorter broadcasts accordingly. YouTube’s encoder help page is the source for the stated archive threshold.
YouTube supports multiple ingest approaches. Its HLS ingest guidance lists OBS among compatible encoders and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use the ingest options shown for your scheduled stream rather than assuming every protocol works identically with every encoder configuration.
