If OBS keeps showing the same video, check which source you added. A Media Source plays an individual file, so its Loop setting repeats that file. To rotate several files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and add each intended video to its playlist. YouTube’s Loop control only repeats playback for viewers; it does not change what OBS sends to a live stream.
First check which OBS source you’re using
OBS’s two relevant source types behave differently. The exact cause in your setup depends on the source and its settings, so identify the source before changing anything.

These settings are documented by the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide. The guide was published January 11, 2022; settings may differ in later OBS versions, so compare its descriptions with the controls in your installed version.
Set up a multi-file rotation in OBS
- Make sure VLC Video is available. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In your scene’s Sources panel, add a VLC Video source, then add the distinct media files you want in the rotation to its playlist.
- Check the playlist contents. Confirm that every intended file appears in the list. Loop Playlist repeats the list once playback reaches its end; it cannot rotate files that were never added.
- Choose the order behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or enable it to randomize the order. Shuffle changes the sequence; it does not control whether the playlist repeats.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour determines what happens when the source is not visible. OBS lists “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default. A source that becomes hidden and visible again may therefore start over rather than continue where it left off.
If you are using a single-file Media Source
Open the Media Source’s properties and inspect Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active. Loop repeats the one file when it ends. The restart option starts the file again when the source becomes active; OBS describes this in terms of the source being in the current scene and visible, and lists the option as on by default.

If your goal is a rotation of multiple videos, changing these single-file settings will not create a playlist. Use VLC Video and verify its file list instead.
Why YouTube’s Loop button does not fix the broadcast
YouTube’s Loop control applies to playback in the YouTube player—for example, when a viewer repeats a video or playlist. It is separate from OBS’s source playback. If OBS sends the same clip repeatedly, changing a viewer’s YouTube Loop setting will not make the live broadcast rotate through other files. Troubleshoot a rotation that still repeats or restarts
- The same clip repeats at the end: Check whether it is a Media Source with Loop enabled. For a multi-file rotation, inspect the VLC Video playlist and confirm it contains each distinct file you intended to play.
- The video starts over after a scene change: Check whether the source became hidden and visible again. Inspect the Media Source restart option or VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour, depending on the source type.
- The files play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist. It randomizes order but is separate from Loop Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing from the source list: Install VLC, and make sure its architecture matches OBS—OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The behavior remains unexplained: Record the source type, exact playlist contents, visibility setting, scene transitions, and OBS log before concluding what is causing it. The documented settings alone cannot diagnose an unknown installation.
