How to Schedule a YouTube Playlist Stream by Video Duration

YouTube schedules the live event, while your encoder or playout service controls whether its playlist plays once, repeats, or stops at a chosen time.

YouTube Studio lets you schedule when a live event starts, but its documented workflow does not include a native control that ends a stream when the videos in a playlist finish. To play a playlist once for its total runtime, configure that behavior in your encoder or hosted playout service, then connect it to the scheduled YouTube event with the event’s stream URL and key. For a true 24/7 broadcast, set the playlist to repeat instead—and decide how the stream will be stopped.

What YouTube schedules—and what it does not

YouTube schedules the live event. An encoder or compatible playout service sends the video feed and determines how the playlist plays. In the YouTube Studio instructions reviewed, there is no native setting that totals playlist durations and automatically ends the broadcast when that total has elapsed. A provider may offer that as its own scheduling feature; check the provider’s current documentation before relying on it.

A scheduled event and a 24/7 loop are different plans. A scheduled event has a start time and may be configured to play the playlist once; a 24/7 stream repeats the playlist until you stop it or the service ends it. A playlist’s total runtime is useful for estimating a one-pass duration, but it does not by itself schedule an event’s end in YouTube Studio.

Choose how the playlist should run

Play once, then stop

Use this when you want one session whose expected duration is the sum of the selected videos. Configure the encoder or playout service to play the list once and stop at the end, or set a stop time if the tool supports one. Confirm whether the tool calculates the end time from playlist duration or expects you to enter it. Account for any gaps, transitions, or other playback behavior that could affect when the feed actually ends.

Repeat continuously

Use this for a 24/7 channel. Set the playlist to loop in the encoder or hosted playout service, and confirm whether it will keep repeating until you stop it. Looping does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the source machine, power, network, and streaming service all matter.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect the playlist

  1. Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to create a scheduled stream. You can reuse stream settings or create a new stream. A scheduled stream may appear to viewers as upcoming, and viewers may be able to opt in to reminders.
  2. Set playback in your encoder or playout service. Build or select the playlist, put videos in the intended order, and choose play-once or repeat. If you need the stream to end at the playlist’s total runtime, verify that the tool supports a duration-based end time; do not assume YouTube Studio supplies it.
  3. Connect the scheduled event. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream. Keep it private, and use the correct key for the event.
  4. Start the feed and check it. Start the encoder or hosted playout. In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream health, then complete the go-live step shown for the scheduled broadcast. Confirm that the intended video and audio are reaching YouTube before leaving the setup unattended.
  5. Confirm the stop behavior. For a one-time playlist, check that the encoder or service will stop at the end or at the configured end time. For a loop, confirm how to stop playback and end the live event when you no longer want it running.

Local encoder or hosted playout?

A local encoder plays and sends the playlist from your computer. That means the computer, power, and network it depends on need to remain available for the broadcast. A hosted playout service runs the feed remotely, so it can avoid depending on your home computer staying on. Exact playlist controls, duration-based stop scheduling, recovery, monitoring, stream-key handling, and terms vary by provider; verify them before you schedule an unattended stream. The available documentation does not establish comparative uptime, performance, or prices for these approaches.

YouTube recommends hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started. Choose equipment or a service for the production and continuity needs you actually have, rather than assuming a more elaborate setup is mandatory.

Plan for the replay limit and YouTube rules

If you need an archived replay, plan around YouTube’s archive guidance: streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive caution, not a claim that YouTube automatically stops every stream after 12 hours. A 24/7 loop should not be treated as a reliable way to preserve one complete replay.

Before going live, make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video, including its music, gameplay footage, and other incorporated material. A playlist or scheduled event does not grant those rights. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright policies, and check that the content is appropriate for the audience and monetization settings you intend to use.

Troubleshoot scheduling and playback

  • The event is scheduled, but no video arrives: check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for that event, that the encoder has started, and that Live Control Room shows an incoming preview.
  • The stream starts but ends at the wrong time: check whether the playlist is set to play once or repeat, and whether the encoder or provider supports a duration-based stop. YouTube Studio’s documented setup does not provide playlist-duration end scheduling.
  • The playlist does not repeat: confirm that looping is enabled in the playout tool. A scheduled YouTube event alone does not make the source playlist repeat.
  • The broadcast drops during unattended playback: check the local computer, power, and network if using a local encoder, or the hosted service’s status and recovery controls if using cloud playout. No playlist setting can guarantee an uninterrupted feed.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: compare the stream length with YouTube’s archive guidance. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
