You can run a separate FFmpeg process for each YouTube channel on one Linux VPS, with each process looping its own server-side playlist and sending video to that channel’s YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key. Keep the media lists, credentials, and services separate. A YouTube playlist is not the same thing as FFmpeg’s local playlist file: changing the order of videos on YouTube does not change what an encoder is sending to a live stream.
Choose what you mean by “playlist rotation”
There are two different workflows that can both be called playlist rotation:
- Rotate files in a live broadcast: FFmpeg reads media stored on the VPS and sends it continuously to YouTube Live. This is the method covered below.
- Reorder a YouTube playlist: the YouTube Data API manages playlist items, which represent videos included in a YouTube playlist. It does not start an encoder or direct a live broadcast.
If you need to update a YouTube playlist itself, the API supports listing, inserting, updating, and deleting playlist items. Insert and update require authorized OAuth access. To set an item’s position, the playlist’s ordering must be set to Manual; otherwise, the API can return manualSortRequired. The documented quota cost is 50 units for each insert or update method call. This API workflow is separate from the live-stream setup.
Plan one independent live setup per channel
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says that multiple channels require a different stream for each channel. For each channel, create or select its live stream in YouTube, then use that stream’s server URL and stream key in its own VPS configuration. Do not reuse one channel’s key as a shared endpoint for every channel.

On the VPS, give each channel its own media directory, playlist file, protected credentials file, and systemd service. The example below uses two channels as placeholders; repeat the same pattern for additional channels. Use channel names that make it difficult to mix up files or keys.
Prepare the VPS and media
Check the workload before choosing a plan
For a Linux VPS in India, compare sustained CPU capacity if you will encode in software, storage for the media, outbound transfer allowance and overage charges, network route to YouTube, region, rules for long-running processes, logging and monitoring, and provider support. The VPS must have enough resources for all channels running at the same time. Multiple software encoders can compete for CPU even when each channel works on its own.
No particular Indian provider, plan, or price is established here, so check current terms directly before renting. Confirm that the provider permits your intended continuous workload and that its outbound-transfer terms cover the amount of video you expect to send.
Install FFmpeg and organize files
Install FFmpeg using the package method supported by your Linux distribution, then check that it is available with ffmpeg -version. Create separate directories, for example /srv/youtube/channel-a and /srv/youtube/channel-b. Put each channel’s licensed video files in its own directory.

Create a concat-demuxer list for each channel. A file at /srv/youtube/channel-a/playlist.txt could contain:

file '/srv/youtube/channel-a/video-03.mp4'Use absolute paths. If a filename contains an apostrophe, escape it correctly for FFmpeg’s concat file syntax or rename the file to avoid ambiguity. Keep the media files in a consistent format: the concat demuxer works best when the files have matching stream layouts and compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio properties. Test the whole list before enabling an unattended loop.
To change the rotation order, edit that channel’s local list and restart its service when you are ready for the new order to take effect. This changes the encoder’s input order only; it does not reorder a YouTube playlist. Avoid replacing or editing a list while FFmpeg is reading it unless you have tested how your chosen setup handles that change.
Create a separate YouTube Live connection for each channel
- In YouTube Studio, configure a live stream for the channel. Use the stream settings provided for that channel and obtain its YouTube Live server URL and stream key. The exact interface can change, so use the current stream settings shown for the channel you are configuring.
- Keep credentials out of the playlist and service file. Store the server URL and key in a root-readable environment file, not in a public repository, shared script, screenshot, or ordinary log. Restrict its permissions; for example, use
chmod 600on the file and ensure it is owned by the account that should read it. - Repeat for each channel. Label each credentials file clearly, and verify that channel A’s service points only to channel A’s stream and channel B’s service only to channel B’s stream.
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to send to the Live server URL with the stream key. Stopping the encoder’s output stops transmission to the live stream. Treat stream keys like passwords: if one is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the matching VPS configuration.

Run one FFmpeg service per channel
Test a channel manually first
Before creating the systemd service, test the playlist and connection interactively. The following is a command template, not a guaranteed configuration for every source file or FFmpeg build. Replace the paths and environment variable names with your own. It copies the source video and audio streams without re-encoding, which avoids a software-encoding load but works only when the streams are compatible with the live ingest requirements.

Do not paste a real key into shell history or include it in a command saved to a public location. Inspect FFmpeg’s output and confirm that YouTube receives the stream. If the files do not have compatible codecs or stream layouts, stream-copy may fail; choose an encoding configuration appropriate to your media and YouTube’s current ingest requirements, then test it before relying on the service. Re-encoding also increases CPU demand.
The -re option reads input at its natural playback rate; -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of the input. These options do not guarantee uninterrupted playback. A broken file, incompatible media, a network failure, or a YouTube-side interruption can still stop or stall a broadcast.
Protect per-channel environment files
For example, put channel A’s values in /etc/youtube/channel-a.env and channel B’s in /etc/youtube/channel-b.env. Keep each file readable only by the service account or root, and do not copy credentials into a unit’s ExecStart line. Anyone who can read a stream key may be able to broadcast to that channel’s stream.

Create a systemd unit for each channel
A unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-channel-a.service can use this pattern. Replace streamuser with a non-root account that can read the channel’s media, playlist, and environment file.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetCheck your installed FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg and use that path in ExecStart. Create a separate unit and environment file for channel B, changing the description, paths, and credentials. Then reload systemd and enable each unit:

sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-channel-b.serviceSystemd’s restart policy can restart a process that exits, but it does not prove that a stream is healthy or guarantee uninterrupted playback. A process can remain running while its output is stalled, and restarting an encoder can interrupt the live transmission. This FFmpeg/systemd arrangement is a self-managed implementation pattern, not a YouTube-endorsed recipe or an uptime guarantee.

sudo journalctl -u youtube-channel-a.service -fUse the equivalent commands for channel B. Also inspect the live stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the encoder is producing output, that the stream is visible to YouTube, and that playback has the expected picture and sound.
- If FFmpeg exits: read the service journal for the first error, check the playlist paths and file permissions, and test the listed media manually.
- If FFmpeg runs but the live feed is absent or stalled: verify that the correct channel’s server URL and key are loaded, check outbound network connectivity, and inspect YouTube Studio’s stream status.
- If the stream fails after a playlist edit: restore the last known-good list, verify every filename and media file, and restart only the affected channel’s service.
- If a restart does not restore playback: check whether the stream key or YouTube stream settings changed, review FFmpeg and systemd logs, then test the connection manually before enabling the service again.
- If the VPS struggles when channels overlap: check CPU, memory, disk, and outbound traffic while all streams are active. Reduce encoding load or increase suitable resources only after identifying the bottleneck.
For unattended operation, alert on both service failure and loss of expected stream output. A restart rule alone cannot detect every network or ingest problem. Back up playlist files and unit configuration without exposing stream keys, and keep a recovery procedure for replacing a compromised key.
Protect copyright and channel eligibility
Only stream videos you have the rights and permissions to broadcast on YouTube. Owning a copy of a video does not by itself establish streaming rights for its footage, music, or other included material. Repeatedly broadcasting content also does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization: YouTube can evaluate originality and reused content under its channel policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before scheduling a loop, and do not treat a technically successful stream as evidence that the content is permitted or eligible.

A VPS gives you direct control over the files and FFmpeg process, but you are responsible for operations and the costs and limits of rented compute and outbound traffic.
