YouTube recommends promoting memberships in video descriptions and says a channel URL ending in /join takes viewers to the membership window. The pitch is optional; it is not a YouTube requirement.
How to add the membership pitch
- Check the offer. Confirm channel memberships are enabled and that every perk you plan to mention is currently available to members. Memberships involve monthly payments in exchange for creator-provided perks. YouTube’s channel memberships guide describes the feature.
- Make the direct link. Copy your channel URL and append
/join. Use your actual channel address; do not substitute a guessed URL. YouTube recommends this link as a route to the membership window. YouTube’s promotion guidance explains the link. - Edit the livestream details. In YouTube Studio, open the livestream’s details and add the invitation and link to its description. Description placement is one of YouTube’s suggested ways to promote memberships.
- Save and check the public page. Review the stream’s watch page to confirm that the copy is readable and the link works as intended. For a scheduled stream, check the public page for that specific stream rather than assuming its saved details display identically in every context.
Write a pitch that tells viewers what they get
Keep the invitation short and specific: explain that membership supports the channel, name one or two real benefits, and provide the direct link. YouTube’s examples of possible perks include badges, emoji, early access, and members-only content; availability depends on the channel’s actual offer. Its membership tips recommend explaining what memberships are, why you offer them, and what members receive.
For example: “Enjoying the stream? Join the channel to support it and get [specific perk]. See the membership options: [your channel URL]/join.” Replace the bracketed text with a benefit you actually provide and your real channel URL. A 24/7 broadcast by itself does not mean members receive extra access or personal support.
Place the pitch after essential stream identification or viewing information, so returning viewers can find the stream details first. Avoid promises such as guaranteed personal replies or exclusive access unless those are genuinely included in your membership offer.

Account for horizontal and vertical live formats
YouTube’s live-format feature table distinguishes horizontal streams from the vertical live feed. It lists clickable links in chat and the channel description for horizontal streams, but not for the vertical live feed; it lists channel memberships for both. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide for the format comparison.
That table describes format features generally, not how a particular account, stream setup, or viewer app will render a specific description. Keep the description link as a direct route, and check your stream’s public watch page rather than relying on a chat link being clickable in every format.

Why a viewer may not see Join
The Join button is not shown to every viewer in every context. YouTube lists possible reasons including memberships being disabled, a viewer being in a region where memberships are unavailable, a video being made for kids, or Join not being available on a particular platform or eligible watch page. YouTube suggests the channel homepage or a /join link in the description as alternatives for some platform-related cases. These options cannot override membership eligibility or regional availability.
Do not put a fixed tier price in evergreen livestream copy unless you can keep it accurate for the intended audience. YouTube cautions that membership prices can vary by platform and country or region. A direct link lets viewers check the offer available to them without relying on a static figure.
