To keep a 4K 60fps YouTube Live broadcast from being interrupted by Windows maintenance, schedule restarts outside your broadcast window, then run a representative stream test after each update. If a problem starts after updating, diagnose whether it is network-related, encoder overload, or a device-driver regression before changing Windows settings or uninstalling an update.
Plan Windows updates around the broadcast
Windows offers ways to schedule or temporarily pause maintenance, not a supported way to stop updates permanently. Microsoft recommends keeping Windows current for security. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and set active hours so automatic restarts are less likely during your usual streaming time. When Windows offers a restart schedule, choose a maintenance window that leaves time to restart and validate the stream before the next event. A temporary pause can help around a specific broadcast, but updates must eventually be installed before pausing again. Microsoft explains update pause options and limits.
Before accepting a large feature update or optional driver change on a dedicated streaming PC, review what it changes and plan a window when an interrupted test would not affect viewers. There is no universally safe update day or delay period that guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Confirm the 4K 60fps encoder settings
YouTube normally detects encoder settings automatically, but confirm the output profile after maintenance. The current YouTube Help guidance for 2160p (4K) at 60 fps recommends different ingestion bitrates by codec:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain the bitrate. Use a codec your encoder supports and test the actual route to YouTube; a speed-test result alone does not prove stable delivery. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance also specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS transport, with RTMPS recommended. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and frame rates up to 60 fps. Low-latency mode is not available at 4K; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. Check YouTube’s current guidance when configuring an encoder because specifications can change.
Run a post-update preflight before going live
- Check the encoder: Open OBS or your encoder and confirm the intended video and audio devices are present, the encoder choice and output settings are intact, and the correct YouTube event is selected.
- Test privately or unlisted where appropriate: Start a test stream using the planned resolution, frame rate, audio, scenes, and representative movement. Check the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Give the test enough lead time: YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. YouTube’s live-stream tips include monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.
- Verify fallbacks: If configured, test backup-encoder failover before the event by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player switches over. Check that local archive files exist and grow while recording; neither a backup nor an archive helps unless it is configured and tested.
Diagnose what changed before changing settings
OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Review YouTube stream-health messages and OBS logs, then compare the bitrate with upload capacity that is stable over time. OBS suggests lowering bitrate, testing a different ingest server or service as a diagnostic, and reviewing network configuration. Network faults are often outside OBS itself. OBS connection troubleshooting also notes outdated network drivers and third-party networking software as possible factors.

If local Wi-Fi reliability is in question, test on wired Ethernet before buying anything. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be useful for that controlled test, but it will not fix an ISP fault, graphics-driver regression, encoder overload, or Windows restart. OBS also documents optional Windows network optimizations and TCP pacing under Settings > Advanced > Network; leave Bind to IP at Default unless your network setup specifically requires another choice. These are troubleshooting options, not universal required settings.
The video stutters or the encoder overloads
Separate network-dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag using the encoder’s statistics and logs. If the PC is overloaded, reduce scene or game load and review the encoder and output settings before blaming the connection. There is no universal hardware specification established here for every 4K/60 workload; check the actual system, workload, and relevant hardware documentation rather than assuming a particular CPU or GPU will suffice.

One specific Windows incident is worth recognizing without generalizing it: Microsoft documented severe stuttering, lag, and choppy audio/video in streaming apps including OBS and NDI Tools after the August 2025 security update KB5063709 when NDI was used to move audio/video between PCs, especially with Display Capture on the source PC. Microsoft says the September 9, 2025 update KB5065429 and later updates resolved that issue. This report concerns that NDI scenario, not all OBS or YouTube streams. Microsoft’s Windows 10 22H2 release-health notes describe the incident.
A display or network adapter behaves differently after updating
Windows Update can deliver drivers for devices such as video cards and network adapters. If the problem began immediately after an update, identify the affected device and inspect its driver before uninstalling a Windows update. In Device Manager, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Administrator permission may be required; restart if prompted. Microsoft says reinstalling the previous driver often resolves problems that appear after Windows Update. If rollback is unavailable or does not help, identify the exact adapter and Windows version and obtain a compatible driver from the device manufacturer’s official site, not an unfamiliar download site. Consider removing an update only as a targeted last resort
Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history to identify what was installed and when. If symptoms strongly track a particular update and narrower checks have not resolved them, review Microsoft’s removal options. Not all updates can be uninstalled, and Microsoft recommends removing updates only when necessary. Microsoft’s update removal guidance explains the available route.

A stream-key mismatch can prevent the encoder from sending to the intended live event. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If you think the key has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, then replace it in the encoder. Never include a stream key in a screenshot, log, or public troubleshooting post. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder connections.

A local recording and a tested backup encoder can reduce the impact of some failures, but neither prevents Windows from restarting the primary streaming PC. Check that local recordings are being written and test failover before relying on either.
