Then confirm FFmpeg maps it and encodes audio for the YouTube ingestion protocol you use. A missing track, wrong mapping, disabled audio, incompatible output settings, or unavailable capture device can all produce the same symptom; without your command, media probe, protocol, and YouTube warning, there is no confirmed single cause.
Start by identifying where the audio disappears
For an “OVHcloud VPS YouTube stream has no audio” problem, separate the source, FFmpeg output, and YouTube ingest stages before changing settings. Keep a copy of the current command, but redact the stream key anywhere you share it.
- Inspect the source: Does the file or input have an audio stream, and is it audible?
- Inspect FFmpeg selection: Is the intended audio stream mapped to the output, and is audio enabled?
- Inspect encoding and protocol: Does the output audio codec and packaging match RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
- Inspect YouTube: Check the Live Control Room stream-health messages while testing.
This sequence helps distinguish “no audio stream exists” from “a track exists but is silent,” and from audio that is lost in output selection or encoding.
Check whether the input actually has audio
Run ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.ext, replacing input.ext with your file, or inspect the input stream summary printed when FFmpeg starts. Look for a stream identified as audio. If there is no audio stream, output options cannot recover speech or music that is not present in the source.
If an audio stream is listed but the output is silent, listen to the source or extract a short sample to verify that the track itself contains audible material. A listed stream can still be silent, contain the wrong language or track, or be the wrong audio source. The right next step depends on what the source is supposed to contain.

Check FFmpeg stream mapping and audio options
When an input has multiple streams, explicitly map the intended video and audio rather than relying on automatic selection. For a simple file with one video and one audio stream, -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? makes the selection explicit. The ? means FFmpeg may continue if that audio stream is absent; it does not create an audio track. Adjust the stream indices to match your input.
- Check that the command does not include
-an, which disables audio recording. - Confirm the intended audio stream is mapped to the output. Mapping matters especially when an input has multiple tracks.
- Set an output audio codec, such as AAC for a first RTMP/RTMPS test.
- Review output-specific options later in the command to ensure they do not disable or replace audio.
FFmpeg documents stream mapping in its ffmpeg Documentation. Stream indices and options depend on the actual input and command, so do not copy a mapping blindly.
Use audio settings that match YouTube RTMP or RTMPS
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its general stereo guidance recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. AAC is a practical first test. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; use the endpoint and stream key configured for your YouTube broadcast.

This illustrative output fragment assumes an input file that already has audio and an RTMPS destination. It is a starting template, not a tested command or a guarantee for every FFmpeg build, input, or stream-key configuration:

-f flv 'rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY'Replace the placeholder with your configured destination privately; never publish a real stream key. Confirm that the endpoint, protocol, and key match your YouTube broadcast, then check stream health during a representative test.
If the stream is stereo
Use YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS stereo recommendations: 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a source or command is configured correctly.

If the stream is 5.1 surround
YouTube’s RTMP guidance supports 5.1 only with AAC and recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for that layout. Those figures are for 5.1, not ordinary stereo. YouTube warns that channel configurations other than mono, stereo, or 5.1 may convert unreliably to stereo. See its 5.1 streaming guidance.
If you use HLS instead of RTMP/RTMPS
Do not apply the RTMP/RTMPS recipe without checking HLS requirements. YouTube Help lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 for HLS audio and specifies HLS packaging and delivery requirements, including TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and the linked developer ingestion documentation for the selected protocol and encoder.
If the source is intentionally silent
If the video is meant to have no speech or music but your workflow needs an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate silence with an anullsrc input. For example:

-f lavfi -i anullsrc=channel_layout=stereo:sample_rate=44100Map that generated input’s audio stream in the output and encode it as AAC. For example, if the silence input is input 1, the relevant options could include -map 1:a:0 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k. The input number depends on the full command. Check that your installed FFmpeg build has the needed filter and test the result. Generated silence is not a fix for missing audio that should contain speech or music.
If audio should come from a microphone or device
Device capture is a separate problem from streaming audio already present in a media file. First confirm Linux exposes the intended audio device. FFmpeg’s device documentation points to /proc/asound/cards and /proc/asound/devices for recognized ALSA devices and describes identifiers such as hw:CARD[,DEV[,SUBDEV]]. PulseAudio capture also depends on the FFmpeg build having the required support and on access to the appropriate server.

Test before going live and read YouTube’s health messages
Send a representative test stream and confirm that the test includes audible audio as well as video. YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Watch the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room while it runs; they can help distinguish an ingest or encoding problem from a silent source.
