Possibly—but you cannot tell from Airtel’s advertised speeds or a single speed test. YouTube recommends an upload bitrate of 35 Mbps for 4K60 using AV1 or H.265, and 50 Mbps using H.264. Airtel 5G averaged 49.75 Mbps upload at hotspots in a February 2026 TRAI assessment in Kottayam, Kerala. That is useful context, not a promise that a connection at your address can hold a live stream steadily.
How much upload speed does 4K60 need?
Match the upload test to the codec selected in your encoder. YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives these recommended bitrates for 2160p at 60 frames per second:
| Codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are encoder bitrate settings, not a claim that any connection measuring the same number will be stable. The minimum is not a prudent target for a stream expected to withstand changing mobile-network conditions. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate, then testing with audio and movement like the real stream and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube’s live encoder settings and guidance also specify constant bitrate encoding (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
For 2160p streams, YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable; they use normal latency. That affects how quickly viewers see the stream, not whether your mobile upload can sustain it.

What Airtel 5G measurements tell you—and what they don’t
A recent Kottayam sample
A Press Information Bureau summary of a TRAI assessment, published on 24 March 2026, reports that Airtel 5G averaged 49.75 Mbps upload at assessed hotspots in Kottayam, Kerala. Tests covered city, highway, coastal, walk-test and hotspot settings. The detailed dates given for the tests are 10–13 February 2026. That hotspot average is above YouTube’s 35 Mbps AV1/H.265 recommendation and close to its 50 Mbps H.264 recommendation, but it is an average from sampled hotspots—not a continuous-rate guarantee for a different location or device.
The same assessment reports 25.56 Mbps as Airtel’s overall average upload in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). It also found poor Airtel data signal strength on 17.63% of the tested Kottayam city route and 61.16% of the tested coastal route in auto-selection mode. These figures describe the assessment’s routes and modes; they are not estimates for all of India. The release has an internal date inconsistency: its introduction refers to routes during February 2025, while its detailed test dates say 10–13 February 2026. The publication date is March 2026, so the detailed dates are the clearest account of the test period.

Coverage and marketing claims are not a stability test
Airtel describes 5G Plus as capable of “up to 30x” speeds compared with existing technologies and advertises 4K video viewing. These are Airtel’s promotional claims, not a measured upload guarantee for a 4K60 live stream. Airtel says existing Airtel SIMs are 5G-enabled; a 5G smartphone is needed. Airtel’s 5G information does not establish sustained upload at your specific address.
You can use the TRAI 5G coverage-map information to check coverage in your area, selecting the relevant generation of network. Treat a map as a first check, not a performance guarantee: TRAI cautions that actual experience can vary from map coverage, including indoors, because conditions are dynamic.

How to test whether your connection can hold the loop
A useful test should resemble the actual stream, not just produce a high peak reading. Run it where the device will stream, with the equipment and settings you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real event, and watching stream health and messages during the event.
- Check the local connection. Confirm the phone or hotspot is connected to Airtel 5G at the precise indoor or outdoor streaming position. Check the coverage map, but do not treat it as proof of usable upload performance.
- Identify the encoder’s codec and bitrate. Compare measured upload with the matching YouTube recommendation: 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 50 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60. Do not compare download speed with an upload target.
- Repeat upload tests at representative times. A single result is a snapshot. Test more than once at the intended location, including times when you expect network use to be busy. These repeated tests are a practical way to check local variation, not a published Airtel guarantee.
- Run the actual stream setup. Use the intended device, encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and stream format. Include representative audio and movement. If appropriate, use an unlisted or private test stream, and check YouTube’s stream-health status and event messages.
- Test for a duration close to the planned loop. A connection that briefly reaches the target may still fluctuate during a longer session. Observe whether the stream remains healthy over a representative period before relying on it for an always-on loop.
Airtel’s Kottayam results show that high 5G uploads are possible in some tested conditions; the route results also illustrate why location and signal matter. Only a representative test at your own streaming site can show whether your particular link is suitable.

Common reasons a 5G speed test can mislead
- The result is download speed, not upload. YouTube’s encoder sends video out; compare upload performance with the codec-specific target.
- The result is a brief peak. A single measurement does not demonstrate continuity. Repeat tests and observe the real stream over a representative duration.
- The test location differs from the streaming location. Indoor signal, device position and local conditions can change performance. Test where the equipment will actually run.
- The test uses a different codec or bitrate. H.264’s 50 Mbps recommendation is higher than AV1/H.265’s 35 Mbps recommendation. Verify the encoder setting before interpreting the number.
- Signal or network conditions change during the stream. A coverage map or hotspot average cannot predict every fluctuation; watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while testing.
