To launch OBS at Windows sign-in and start a 4K/60 YouTube broadcast, configure OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 fps, add OBS to your Windows Startup folder, and append --startstreaming to its shortcut. YouTube’s stream auto-start setting also affects whether the encoder can initiate the broadcast. Test the full setup before leaving it unattended: opening OBS does not prove the stream is reaching YouTube at the intended quality.
Before you set OBS to start streaming automatically
Confirm that YouTube Live is ready
If this is your first time going live, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and destination information; treat it as private, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed. Decide whether sign-in should start the broadcast
There are two separate actions: Windows can launch the OBS application, and OBS can begin streaming. If you want OBS merely open at sign-in, omit the launch argument described below. If you want the broadcast to start too, use --startstreaming and check the stream’s auto-start behavior in YouTube Studio. Do not enable unattended streaming until you have confirmed the intended scene, stream key, audio, and broadcast visibility.
Set YouTube Live 4K 60fps OBS settings
Set the video resolution and frame rate
- In OBS, open Settings > Video.
- Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Values to 60.
- Check that the canvas, sources, and scene are composed for 4K. A 4K output setting does not turn lower-resolution source material into genuine 4K detail.
OBS notes that output resolution determines the stream’s output and that 60-fps streaming can place a significant load on the system. Its Quick Start Guide recommends testing the configuration rather than assuming the computer can sustain it.

Select an encoder and match YouTube’s bitrate guidance
In Settings > Output, select an encoder supported by your PC, OBS installation, and graphics drivers. YouTube’s 2160p60 ingest guidance varies by codec:

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a guarantee that your PC or internet connection can sustain a 4K60 stream. Use a stable upload connection with headroom above the target bitrate, then watch YouTube’s stream health during a representative test. The figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; the help page does not state a publication year.
Check transport, keyframes, and audio
YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds in its guidance). Its general advanced settings include progressive scan, square pixels, and two B-frames. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit; audio should be AAC, with 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1. Match these settings to the options available for your selected OBS encoder and mode; not every encoder exposes identical controls. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.

YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization option for 4K streams; 4K is set to normal latency. If low latency is essential, 4K may not fit that requirement.

OBS recommends using hardware encoding when it is available, since it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS documents NVENC on Windows and AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync on compatible hardware. Support and quality depend on the installed hardware, driver, OBS version, and encoder generation; earlier encoder generations may produce lower image quality at a given bitrate. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its baseline Windows requirements, but that baseline is not a 4K60 performance guarantee. Scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and encoder all affect load. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual game or scene you plan to stream. OBS system requirements do not establish one universal GPU model for 4K/60.

Add OBS to Windows startup
Use the Startup folder for ordinary sign-in
- Press Windows + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the current user’s Startup folder. To run an item for all users, useshell:common startupinstead. - Find the OBS shortcut. If needed, open the Start menu, locate OBS Studio, right-click it and choose Open file location, then copy its shortcut into the Startup folder.
- Sign out and sign back in to confirm OBS opens. You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps in Windows 10 or 11 if OBS appears there.

Make the shortcut start streaming
- Right-click the OBS shortcut and select Properties.
- In Target, keep the quoted path to
obs64.exe, add a space after the closing quotation mark, then add--startstreaming. The target will resemble"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming; use the actual path on your PC. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe, such asC:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitif that is where your installation is located. - Select Apply and OK, then test by launching the shortcut. Confirm the intended OBS profile and scene load and that YouTube receives the stream.
OBS’s launch-parameter guidance specifically calls for setting the working directory (“Start in”) to the folder containing obs64.exe when launching by scheduled or other automated means. See OBS launch parameters.

A Startup-folder shortcut is the simpler choice for launching OBS at normal user sign-in. Task Scheduler can be useful when you need a logon trigger plus conditions or a delay.

- Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task.
- On General, configure OBS to run in the user’s interactive session so its interface is available.
- On Triggers, add a trigger for At log on and select the appropriate user.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set the program to the full path of
obs64.exe, the arguments to--startstreamingif you want the broadcast to begin, and Start in to the containing folder. - Save the task and test it by signing in or using Task Scheduler’s run option. Verify the OBS window, stream health, and audio rather than treating task success as proof of a healthy broadcast.
Microsoft’s logon-trigger example documents launching an executable at user logon. A GUI streaming app should not be assumed usable when launched in a non-interactive session.

- Use a test scene and content with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast; YouTube advises testing before going live.
- Restart Windows, sign in, and confirm OBS opens the intended profile and scene.
- Check that YouTube receives 2160p60, audio is present, and the actual bitrate is stable. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- Verify the stream starts only when you want it to. A successful OBS launch alone does not confirm that YouTube has received a healthy stream.
- Supervise the first unattended run. A delayed sign-in, unavailable network, changed stream key, or update can interrupt the chain.
YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. See its encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
Troubleshoot common startup and 4K60 problems
OBS opens, but the broadcast does not start
Check that --startstreaming appears after the quoted executable path, with a space between them. Confirm OBS has the intended profile, YouTube stream URL, and current stream key. If you do not want the broadcast to start automatically, remove the argument. Review the stream’s auto-start behavior in YouTube Studio.

YouTube receives a lower resolution or frame rate
Recheck OBS Settings > Video for 3840×2160 and 60 fps, and confirm the output settings are applied to the active profile. Check YouTube’s received-stream status during a test. Do not infer actual 4K60 delivery solely from the resolution of your canvas or source.
The stream drops frames, stutters, or reports poor health
Determine whether the issue is encoding load or network stability by checking OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A complex scene, 4K60 encoding load, or upload connection without enough headroom can prevent a stable stream. Test with the real scene and lower-demand alternatives if necessary, such as reducing scene complexity or choosing a lower output setting. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation is not a substitute for a stable connection.
OBS fails to launch from Task Scheduler
Verify the program path, arguments, logon trigger, and Start in directory. OBS’s launch-parameter instructions require the working directory to point to the folder containing obs64.exe for automated launching. Ensure the task runs in the interactive user session if you need to see and manage the OBS window.
The stream key may be exposed or no longer works
Do not publish or share the key. If it may have been compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key before the next unattended run.
