Plan for archives before you run a 24/7 stream
A continuous broadcast is not necessarily a continuous YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a single automatic archive an unreliable sole record of a 24/7 feed.
Keep a local recording as a backup, as YouTube recommends. Choose storage according to your recording bitrate, how long you want to retain footage, and your backup plan; an external SSD is one possible option, not a YouTube requirement. Decide how you will divide or publish useful portions so viewers can find manageable sections even if the continuous broadcast cannot serve as one complete archive.
Keep a timestamp log
During the broadcast, note the times of useful moments and what happens there. This is an editorial practice, not a YouTube requirement. A concise log makes it easier to add accurate chapters later and identify clips worth editing into highlights.

Promote the live event
If you are treating a broadcast as an event, YouTube recommends sharing its live link at least 48 hours in advance. You can also use a Live section to display upcoming and live events. These are promotion options, not requirements, and neither guarantees an audience.
Add chapters to make the archive navigable
Chapters divide a video into named sections. Viewers can use the progress bar or select a chapter title to jump to a point that interests them. For manually added chapters, YouTube’s criteria are:

- The first timestamp must be 00:00.
- Include at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
Enter timestamps in the video description
- Open YouTube Studio and select the relevant video.
- In the video’s description, add the timestamp list, starting at 00:00, followed by a title for each chapter.
- Check that there are at least three timestamps, they appear in chronological order, and the time between each timestamp and the next is at least 10 seconds.
- Save the description and review the video to confirm the chapter labels and jump points make sense.
Use specific, viewer-oriented names such as the game, match, challenge, or activity taking place. YouTube’s chapter criteria specify timestamp formatting and spacing, not a required naming style. For a 24/7 feed, chapters are most useful on a published archive or segment that people can actually browse—not as a substitute for deciding what to preserve from the live broadcast.
Build a playlist that gives viewers a next step
After a stream, YouTube recommends putting the live archive and highlight clips into playlists. A playlist creates a browsable path from the full broadcast to more focused viewing. Make the archive public if that suits your channel and audience; YouTube says a public archive can increase the reach of future streams, but that is platform guidance, not a promised result.

Choose an order for the viewer
YouTube’s playlist tools let you reorder videos. Consider a sequence that reduces friction for a new viewer:
- Put an orientation or best starting point first, if you have one.
- Follow with the full archive for people who want the broadcast in context.
- Add shorter highlights for viewers looking for specific moments or a quicker introduction.
This is an editorial approach, not an official ranking rule. Give the playlist a clear title and a concise description explaining how its videos relate to the stream and which item to watch next. Descriptions help set expectations; they do not guarantee recommendation placement.

Choose between the full archive and highlights

Chapters can help viewers navigate an archive, but they do not shorten it. Highlights take editing work and may leave out context. For a 24/7 feed, YouTube’s guidance establishes a risk for automatic capture beyond 12 hours but does not prescribe how often to create segments. Choose a publishing rhythm that fits the material and makes the playlist understandable.

- The 24/7 broadcast has no complete archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically. Use a local recording backup and publish useful portions as appropriate.
- Chapters do not appear: Check that the first timestamp is 00:00, there are at least three ascending timestamps, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
- A chapter points to the wrong moment: Compare the timestamp with the recording and your event log, then correct the description.
- Viewers do not know what to watch next: Reorder the playlist to put a useful starting point first, then explain the relationship between the archive and highlights in its description.
