The best YouTube Live widgets are the few that make your stream easier to follow: alerts for stream events, a chat box when viewers should see comments, and labels or goals only when they add useful context. For a scene with several elements, StreamElements documents a way to combine them in one overlay and add it to OBS as a browser source; Streamlabs documents a customizable YouTube chat box. Pick by purpose, confirm YouTube support, and preview each element in your actual scene.
Choose widgets by what your stream needs
A widget is an on-screen element added to your broadcast scene. It might acknowledge an event, show audience messages, or present a small amount of stream information. More overlays are not automatically better: each one should help the audience follow what is happening.
- Alerts: Notifications for supported events, such as follows, donations, or subscriptions. OBS describes alerts as a way to thank viewers for these activities. OBS Project’s alerts tutorial explains the common setup.
- Chat boxes: A live display of chat messages, useful when comments are part of the on-stream conversation. Streamlabs documents YouTube support and settings for appearance, message timing, filtering, and optional sound notifications. See Streamlabs’ Chat Box guide.
- Labels and event lists: A label can show one detail, such as the latest follower; an event list can show several recent events. OBS covers labels and event lists in its alerts tutorial.
- Goals: Progress displays can make sense when the target is relevant to the stream and its viewers. StreamElements lists goals among its overlay types.
- Custom widgets: For behavior or design beyond built-in options, StreamElements documents custom widgets using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, stream events, and an API.
Leave out elements that compete with gameplay, obscure important information, or add clutter without helping viewers.
Which widget platform fits your setup?
These options have different documented strengths; the available documentation does not establish a universal winner or a performance ranking.

YouTube lists StreamElements and Streamlabs as third-party live-stream tools, while noting that these products are not made or endorsed by Google. Its Live Chat API enables external apps to read, send, and moderate messages in real time and build tools such as on-screen comments and interactive experiences. Add a widget to an OBS scene
- Configure the widget with its provider. Choose the platform and customize the element there. For a third-party alert or widget, locate its overlay or widget URL using the provider’s instructions.
- Open the scene in OBS where the widget should appear. Add a Browser source, paste the URL, and set dimensions appropriate to the overlay. The exact controls and recommended dimensions depend on the widget.
- Preview it in the real scene. Check legibility against the gameplay or other video, confirm that messages and names fit, and make sure the overlay does not cover important content. Adjust its size and position as needed.
- Check scene behavior. If the same Streamlabs Chat Box appears in multiple scenes, its guide recommends reusing the existing source to avoid duplicated notification sounds. It also recommends leaving Shutdown source when not visible unchecked when timed settings or chat continuity across scene changes matter.
- Test before relying on it live. Verify that the widget appears in the intended scene and that the provider is connected to the right YouTube account and stream. Do not assume a browser source alone resolves account permissions or provider-side requirements.
For alerts in OBS, the project’s tutorial states: “Note: you do NOT require any plugins to use alerts in your stream”. The workflow it describes uses a provider’s overlay URL in an OBS Browser source. OBS alert setup.

Check YouTube-specific chatbot requirements
Widget overlays and chatbots are related but not interchangeable: an overlay displays information in your scene, while a chatbot joins or interacts with chat. Before choosing a chatbot, check the provider’s current YouTube prerequisites and which features it supports for your account.
- StreamElements says its YouTube chatbot requires the stream to be public and live before the bot can join.
- The same StreamElements support page, updated in August 2024, says some loyalty-system features—including giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests—are not currently available for YouTube accounts. Because account behavior and service features can change, confirm the current status before planning a stream around them.
- StreamElements advises using Live chat rather than Top chat so bot messages are visible.
- For YouTube chat display, Streamlabs documents platform selection and appearance, timing, filtering, and sound options in its Chat Box instructions.
How to decide what to install
- Start with the stream format. A gameplay stream with live audience interaction may benefit from a chat box; an event-focused stream may need alerts. A quiet or tightly composed scene may work better with no overlay.
- Choose the fewest elements that do the job. StreamElements documents combining several overlay elements in one browser source. Streamlabs documents a configurable Chat Box and a browser-source workflow. Choose based on the elements and provider controls you need, not an assumed performance advantage.
- Confirm platform fit. Check YouTube support for the specific widget or chatbot feature, not only for the service in general.
- Preview in context and remove distractions. Make sure the widget is readable and does not cover game UI, captions, or other important content.
The official setup pages describe capabilities and workflows, not comparative visual quality, reliability, latency, or resource use. They do not support claims that one provider will perform better for every creator.
