Check the Memberships-specific transaction and member reports, compare matching billing periods, and confirm whether you are looking at estimated Analytics revenue or finalized AdSense for YouTube earnings. Without the channel’s reports and dates, the specific cause cannot be determined.
First, identify which “membership revenue” figure changed
YouTube shows membership-related information in more than one place, and the figures may cover different measures or time windows. Before diagnosing a rise or drop, note the report, exact metric label, currency, date range, and whether the figure is estimated or finalized.
- Memberships tab: YouTube says this shows earnings for the last billing period, along with member information.
- Analytics membership revenue: This can show estimated membership revenue for a custom date range.
- Transactions: Sign-ups and recurring payments are activity counts, not the same thing as a revenue total.
- AdSense for YouTube: This is where finalized earnings appear; they may differ from estimated Analytics revenue.
These distinctions matter when, for example, a creator compares a recent Memberships-tab total with an Analytics range or a finalized AdSense amount. YouTube explains the reports and their definitions in its channel memberships guidance and revenue analytics guidance.
Compare matching billing periods and member activity
A membership billing period can be 28, 30, or 31 days depending on the month. A custom Analytics date range may not line up with the last billing period shown in the Memberships tab, so compare like-for-like windows before treating a difference as a change in underlying performance. YouTube documents the billing-period distinction in its membership reporting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn YouTube Studio, inspect the Memberships tab and the relevant Audience and Revenue reports. Look at members gained, cancellations, members lost, total and active members, membership levels, sign-ups, recurrences, and gifted memberships. Total members can include people who canceled but retain access until their paid period ends; active members exclude canceled members.
For a custom-range breakdown, open YouTube Studio → Analytics → Revenue → How you make money → Memberships. The Transactions Revenue card counts new sign-ups and recurrences. Compare those transactions with cancellations and members lost, then check whether the mix of membership levels changed. A raw member count does not tell the whole story if the level mix or timing of transactions differs.

Do not use RPM or live metrics to infer a membership change
RPM is an aggregate metric: it combines ads, memberships, YouTube Premium, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. A change in RPM therefore does not identify which revenue source moved. Use the membership-specific breakdown to answer a membership question, as described in YouTube’s revenue analytics documentation.
Live-stream reporting is a separate view. YouTube says revenue reports are unavailable when filtering for Live in the live-metrics workflow described in its live-stream metrics guidance. Analytics data is processed and based on video ID, so concurrent viewers, stream duration, or a Live-only report cannot establish a membership billing change. YouTube does list ads, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers as live monetization routes, but ad serving is not guaranteed for every slot. Those sources can affect an aggregate figure or RPM without being a change in membership revenue.

Reconcile estimated revenue with finalized earnings
Analytics revenue is estimated. Finalized earnings appear in AdSense for YouTube and may differ, including because of applicable tax withholding. Compare the same type of figure across periods: estimates with estimates, and finalized earnings with finalized earnings. See YouTube’s revenue reporting guidance and AdSense for YouTube earnings guidance.
Check YouTube’s share and any network arrangement
YouTube says creators receive 70% of membership revenue after applicable taxes and fees are deducted, and that YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including card fees. Creators in a multichannel network (MCN) should also check their network agreement, since the MCN may take an additional share. These terms affect what reaches a creator, but they do not by themselves identify why a particular period changed. See YouTube’s membership guidance.
A practical diagnosis checklist
- Write down the comparison: record both date ranges, report names, metric labels, currencies, and whether each number is estimated or finalized.
- Align the windows: compare equivalent billing periods, bearing in mind that membership periods can be 28, 30, or 31 days.
- Open the membership breakdown: in YouTube Studio, go to Analytics → Revenue → How you make money → Memberships and select a custom range where needed.
- Compare activity and composition: review transactions, sign-ups, recurrences, cancellations, members lost, active versus total members, membership levels, and gifted memberships.
- Keep other revenue separate: do not attribute a change in RPM or a Live-filtered metric to memberships without confirming it in the membership report.
- Reconcile final earnings: compare Analytics estimates with AdSense for YouTube finalized earnings separately, and account for applicable withholding or an MCN arrangement.
YouTube’s documentation explains what to inspect, but it cannot establish what happened on a particular channel. Pinpointing an individual change requires the actual compared date ranges, report values, membership-level mix, transaction and cancellation activity, and whether the figures are estimates or finalized earnings.
