To show YouTube membership progress inside the video, use a third-party overlay such as Streamlabs’ Sub Goal widget and add its URL to OBS as a Browser Source. YouTube’s documented native goals cover Super Chats and eligible gifts on vertical streams—not a membership-count goal—so the native goal display is not a substitute for an on-screen member counter.
Choose where viewers should see the goal
YouTube’s native goals appear in live chat and Live Control Room after a stream begins. Its documentation describes Super Chat goals for horizontal livestreams and Premieres, and gift goals for eligible vertical livestreams; it does not list a native goal for channel memberships. Availability of gift goals can vary. YouTube permits one native goal at a time, and viewers see a celebration when it is reached. YouTube’s Goals help page explains the native options.
For progress that is visible in the broadcast picture, use a membership widget. Streamlabs’ Sub Goal widget can count YouTube Members and Gifted Members, and its saved widget URL can be displayed in OBS. Streamlabs’ Goals Widgets page lists the widget, while its setup guide describes the configuration.
Set up a Streamlabs membership goal in OBS

Configure the Sub Goal widget
Open the Sub Goal widget settings in Streamlabs. Enter a goal title, target amount, starting amount, and end date. Select YouTube as the platform, then choose whether the goal counts Members, Gifted Members, or both. Select a display style and save the widget.

Add the widget to the OBS scene
Copy the saved widget URL. In OBS, select the scene that will be live, then use Sources > + > Browser to add a Browser Source. Paste the URL and set the source’s width and height to suit your canvas. Position it where it will not cover subtitles, game information, or other important content.
OBS describes Browser Source as an embedded web page and documents its dimensions and refresh controls in the OBS Browser Source guide. The Streamlabs URL workflow is also intended for other software that supports browser sources.

Make the count clear at a glance
Use a short, literal label such as “Channel members: 240 / 300.” If gifted memberships count toward the target, make that clear in the label or nearby explanation. Viewers may join midway through a nonstop broadcast, so the goal should make sense without a host explaining it live. Check that it remains readable at mobile size.

Test the actual live scene
Before relying on the overlay, test the scene with an unlisted stream. Confirm the widget is visible in the public output and that its count is displayed as expected. Check the count again after restarting or changing the scene. Keep the widget in the scene that is actually live.

Keep the overlay maintained on a nonstop broadcast
OBS Browser Source offers controls for whether a source shuts down while hidden, whether it refreshes when its scene becomes active, and a manual cache refresh. These settings can help with recovery, but neither the OBS nor Streamlabs documentation promises that membership data will update without interruption through an indefinite broadcast.
- If the source is hidden in some scenes, review its shutdown and refresh behavior in the Browser Source properties.
- If the widget appears stale, use its available refresh controls or restart the source, then verify the public stream output.
- Decide who is responsible for changing the target or starting a new goal, and when to do it.
- Plan a manual reset or update when a goal is reached or its end date passes. The Streamlabs guide describes entering a target and end date, but does not establish automatic rollover or continuous persistence.
What native YouTube goals can—and cannot—do
Use YouTube’s native goal when the objective is a Super Chat goal or an eligible vertical-stream gift goal displayed through YouTube’s live interface. Use the membership widget when the objective is a member count printed over the video. These are different kinds of progress indicators: YouTube’s documented native goals are not membership counters, while the Streamlabs widget is the documented route here for counting YouTube Members and Gifted Members in an on-screen overlay.
