To restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS, run your encoder as a supervised Linux service and configure YouTube’s broadcast settings for the way you stream. A service restart brings back the encoder process; it does not, by itself, guarantee that the YouTube broadcast starts or resumes. Check both the VPS service and YouTube’s ingest or broadcast state after recovery.
How do I restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS?
Use a process supervisor such as systemd to relaunch a long-running encoder when it exits. The VPS runs the encoder and sends video to YouTube’s ingest address using a stream key. YouTube separately manages the broadcast event and whether encoder activity starts or stops it. YouTube explains the role of the stream key in its live stream settings guide; its API models broadcasts and streams as distinct resources that must be associated with each other (LiveBroadcasts, Understanding Broadcasts and Streams).
The example below is an implementation pattern, not an OVHcloud-endorsed configuration. Adapt it to your Linux distribution, systemd version, encoder command, executable path, user, and secrets handling. OVHcloud describes VPS administration as the customer’s responsibility, including service security and stability (OVHcloud VPS security guidance).
How do I make FFmpeg restart if it crashes?
1. Put the encoder command in a service
Create a unit file such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Replace the example paths and values with your own. This example assumes FFmpeg is installed at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, the media file is readable by the selected service user, and /etc/youtube-stream.env contains the encoder URL and stream key.

Description=YouTube live encoder

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/video/stream.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The command is only a template: -re reads a file at its native rate and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. Stream-copy options work only when the source codecs, container, and stream characteristics are accepted by YouTube. If they are not, configure appropriate encoding options rather than assuming the copy command is valid for every file. For a camera, playlist, or other input, replace the input and loop behavior accordingly.
2. Protect the stream key and validate the unit
Store the stream key in a root-readable environment file, not in a publicly readable script or a command you share. For example, set ownership and permissions so only root can read it, then ensure the service can receive the variables through systemd. The exact permissions and service-user arrangement depend on your host’s security policy. Treat the key like a credential: if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
After saving the unit, load it and start the service:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
enable configures the service to start at boot; --now starts it immediately. Confirm the service reports active, then inspect recent output with:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f
Restart=on-failure is intended to restart the process after a failure systemd detects; RestartSec=5 inserts a delay between attempts. Verify the exact semantics against the systemd documentation installed for your distribution. A command that exits successfully, a configuration error that repeatedly exits, an unavailable network, or invalid credentials may not produce the recovery you expect. Test the unit deliberately before relying on it.
Make sure YouTube will accept the reconnect
Use the intended stream key and broadcast
In YouTube Studio, check the selected stream’s encoder settings and confirm that the URL and key in the VPS configuration belong to the intended stream. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Resetting a compromised key means updating the encoder configuration as well. YouTube’s stream settings guide also notes that reuse settings carry forward selections such as auto-start and auto-stop.

Check auto-start and auto-stop
When auto-start is enabled, YouTube documents that a broadcast can start when video arrives on its bound stream. With auto-start disabled, sending video does not necessarily put the broadcast live; an API-managed workflow may need a liveBroadcasts.transition call. Auto-stop controls what happens when the encoder stops sending: YouTube’s API reference describes stopping the broadcast around one minute after the channel owner stops streaming (LiveBroadcasts API reference).
Do not assume every scheduled broadcast behaves like a continuously recurring stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions tell users of scheduled streams to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and click Go live when required (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Check the actual auto-start setting and the broadcast’s state for your workflow.
Recurring feed or scheduled event?
| Operating pattern | What the VPS does | YouTube lifecycle consideration | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Persistent or recurring encoder feed | Systemd supervises a long-running sender and relaunches it after a detected failure. | Auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether encoder activity starts or ends the broadcast. | Fewer manual actions for a continuing feed, but viewers may notice a disconnect while the sender recovers. |
| Scheduled or API-managed event | The encoder sends to the stream associated with the intended event. | The broadcast may require an explicit transition to live; a stream can be reused, while a broadcast is a distinct event bound to a stream. | More control over event lifecycle, with more setup and state management. |
Choose based on whether you are maintaining a recurring channel feed or managing distinct scheduled events. YouTube’s broadcast and stream model explains the relationship between those resources.

Verify recovery at both ends
- On the VPS: use
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceto check whether the process is running, andjournalctl -u youtube-stream.serviceto find FFmpeg errors or restart attempts. - At YouTube: inspect the Live Control Room preview and broadcast state. A running local service is not proof that YouTube is receiving usable video.
- For API workflows: Google’s lifecycle guidance identifies
liveStream.status.streamStatus=activeas a sign that YouTube’s servers are receiving encoder data. It says transitions typically take 5 to 10 seconds, though some may take up to one minute. These are documented workflow timings, not a guarantee of reconnect time or uninterrupted playback (Life of a Broadcast).
Troubleshooting automatic restarts
The service is inactive after FFmpeg exits
Check the unit for a missing or incorrect Restart=on-failure directive, reload systemd after edits, and inspect the journal for the exit status. Confirm that the process actually failed rather than exiting successfully, since the chosen restart policy matters.
FFmpeg restarts repeatedly but YouTube has no preview
Look for authentication, DNS, network, and input-file errors in the journal. Verify that the URL and stream key are current and belong to the intended YouTube stream. Check whether the VPS can reach the ingest service and whether FFmpeg can read and decode the source.
YouTube receives video but the broadcast is not live
Check the broadcast’s auto-start setting and whether the event requires a manual Go live action or an API transition. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream bound to that event, rather than to another reusable stream.

The service does not start after a reboot
Check that the unit is enabled, that its dependencies and environment file are available at boot, and that the service user can read the media and configuration. Review the journal for the failed boot attempt.
The VPS network or operating system is misconfigured
OVHcloud rescue mode can help diagnose network issues, repair a broken operating system, or fix a misconfigured software firewall. Booting into the rescue environment requires a VPS reboot and interrupts services, so use it as a recovery procedure rather than a live-stream failover (OVHcloud rescue mode guide).
