Hetzner Cloud can avoid running a home computer, but its advertised compute price is not the whole bill: include the region, IPv4, VAT, data transfer, storage, and backups. For Germany or Finland, Hetzner’s June 15, 2026 price table lists a CX23 at €5.49 per month before IPv4 and VAT; that is an anchor, not an all-in 24/7 streaming cost. Check Hetzner’s current price details before choosing a server.
What a fair monthly comparison includes
Compare the same video, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, stream duration, and number of destinations on both setups. Otherwise, the bills may describe different workloads. A prerecorded loop and a live camera feed are not necessarily equivalent workloads: encoding method and simultaneous outputs affect resource demand, and there is no universal minimum Hetzner instance size established for every stream.
Separate monthly cash cost from operational effort. A cloud estimate should account for compute, applicable network transfer, IP, tax, storage, and backups. A desktop estimate should include electricity and any incremental networking or equipment costs, but not the purchase price of a computer you already own. Also weigh maintenance time, recovery from failures, and whether the stream depends on your household power and ISP. Those trade-offs matter, but they do not establish a universal reliability winner.
Hetzner Cloud: the server price is only one line
Hetzner’s official price adjustment page says new prices for new orders and cloud instance rescales took effect on June 15, 2026. Its English table lists these CX23 monthly prices before IPv4 and VAT:

These are region-specific listed prices, not guaranteed totals for a particular account or a complete streaming setup. Check the live configurator for current compute pricing, IPv4 treatment, tax, included transfer, and any storage or backup charges that apply to your location and configuration. Do not ignore continuous outbound traffic
A stream sends data continuously. Bitrate therefore drives outbound volume, so check the server’s current transfer allowance and overage terms rather than assuming transfer is free. YouTube publishes encoder guidance for resolution and bitrate and recommends RTMPS for Live ingestion. Use its current YouTube Live encoder settings to choose a profile, then estimate transfer against the actual bitrate and running hours.

For a 30-day month, use 720 operating hours. The electricity calculation is:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 hours × your electricity price per kWh = monthly energy cost

Substituting 120 W gives 0.12 kW × 720 hours = 86.4 kWh for the month, before multiplying by your tariff. Your desktop’s actual average draw may differ. A plug-in energy monitor can help measure it while the machine is running the intended stream setup.
Use the same measurement boundary each time: include the computer and any equipment that must remain on for streaming if you want to compare the household’s incremental electricity use. Your tariff and any additional internet or equipment expense are local inputs, not universal figures.

The available evidence does not establish that a CX23, or any single instance size, is sufficient for every 24/7 stream. The encoding workload depends on your content and chosen settings. Select the stream profile from YouTube’s published encoder guidance, configure the server or desktop for that profile, and test the real stream while monitoring encoder health. Check transfer usage and server resources over time rather than assuming a small compute quote proves the setup will handle the workload.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Keep the stream key private, use the correct key for the intended YouTube stream, and verify the stream is stable before relying on it continuously. For YouTube’s current rules and practical checks, review its Live encoder setup guidance rather than copying settings from a different resolution or bitrate.
Plan separately for a complete archive
A 24/7 live broadcast does not guarantee a complete YouTube replay. YouTube states: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need a full archive, plan for it separately—for example, keep a local recording or divide the broadcast into sessions—and include the required storage and backup costs in the comparison.
Which option is cheaper for you?
- A desktop may win on cash cost when it is already owned, its measured power draw and your electricity tariff are modest, and the connection and machine can stay available.
- Hetzner may suit you better when avoiding an always-on home PC and home-connection dependency is worth the server bill and the added configuration and maintenance.
- The result is location- and workload-specific: use the actual server region, current transfer and IP terms, tax, measured desktop watts, local tariff, stream profile, and archive needs. The listed CX23 price alone cannot settle the comparison.
