Not necessarily. It depends on whether the cloud sends a stream to YouTube or delivers video directly to viewers. Google Cloud says transfer from a VM to YouTube has no charge under its named-product pricing rule. Direct-to-viewer traffic is different: cloud or CDN egress can be billed by volume, destination and plan. Compare the same work on both sides—cloud runtime and applicable delivery costs against a PC’s measured electricity use and local tariff—rather than assuming that every viewer’s playback data leaves your cloud VM.
First identify who delivers playback to viewers
A creator’s live feed sent to YouTube is not the same traffic path as a cloud server delivering a separate video copy to each viewer. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. As a result, the encoder’s upload bitrate is not a direct measure of YouTube’s per-viewer delivery volume.

Google’s rule is specific to the named Google Cloud transfer path. It does not mean all cloud egress is free, does not apply automatically to other providers, and does not make every cost of running a YouTube channel free. Google’s published public-internet egress rates are separately priced and vary by destination and monthly usage tier. See Google Cloud network pricing.
Use a like-for-like monthly comparison
For the PC, use its average power draw while doing the actual streaming work, not the stream bitrate. Measure it with a suitable power meter if possible, then apply your electricity tariff. For cloud, add VM or encoder runtime, storage or packaging where applicable, and any network or CDN delivery charges for the actual traffic path.

- PC electricity: average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.
- Direct-to-viewer data estimate: bitrate in Mbps × concurrent viewers × hours × 0.45 ≈ decimal GB. Treat this as an estimate; providers’ unit conventions and billable-byte rules can differ.
- Billing period: a 30-day month contains 720 hours; a 31-day month contains 744. Use the actual interval you are estimating.
Keep electricity separate from internet-plan charges and equipment purchase or depreciation. The result depends on your measured PC watts and tariff, stream bitrate, concurrent audience, cloud region, destination, selected plan and any included transfer allowance. There is no defensible universal PC power draw, electricity price or break-even figure for all setups.
What published network prices show—and what they do not
Google Cloud: VM-to-YouTube is not the same as internet egress
Google Cloud’s pricing page lists transfer from a VM to named Google products including YouTube as “No charge.” Separately, the pricing page lists Premium Tier internet transfer to North America at $0.12/GiB for the 1–1,024 GiB monthly tier, after the first 1 GiB/account free tier; higher listed monthly tiers show $0.11/GiB and $0.08/GiB. These are Google Cloud published rates on the page accessed in 2026, not universal cloud rates; destination and tier matter. Check Google Cloud’s current network pricing for the applicable path and current terms.

AWS: an illustrative direct-viewer example
Amazon Web Services’ live-streaming guide models 1,000 viewers at 1.8 Mbps each as 791 GB/hour of CloudFront viewer transfer. At its assumed $0.085/GB, that produces $67.24/hour. AWS says this scenario assumes every viewer receives the highest bitrate, so it is an upper-range illustration rather than a forecast for a particular channel. Actual delivery costs depend on audience bitrate mix, region, service, current pricing and allowances. Read AWS’s live-streaming example.
Flat-rate allowances still have terms
AWS separately documents CloudFront flat-rate plans. Its default Premium example lists a 50 TB monthly transfer allowance and a $1,000/month price, as shown on the page accessed in 2026. This is a plan example, not proof that every workload is eligible or covered at that price; check current availability and terms. Review CloudFront flat-rate pricing.

Do not confuse ingest recommendations with viewer bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 30 fps. Those are recommended ingest rates, not an estimate of the bytes YouTube sends to each viewer. YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats, so viewer delivery varies by playback rendition and viewing conditions. YouTube’s playback guidance recommends a sustained connection of 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD; those are connection recommendations for playback, not guaranteed encoded stream bitrates.
Use the actual delivered bitrate and number of concurrent viewers when estimating a service that serves playback directly. For a stream sent to YouTube, do not multiply the encoder’s upload bitrate by the audience and treat the result as cloud egress.
