XSplit Broadcaster 4.3 introduced four headline changes: a Layout Wizard, a refreshed Sources menu, customizable lower thirds, and a customizable background source. It launched on March 1, 2022; XSplit’s release index shows the software continued to receive updates after 4.3, so treat the features below as a guide to that historical release, not a description of every current interface. See XSplit’s 4.3 announcement and current release notes before following version-specific instructions.
What was new in XSplit Broadcaster 4.3?
XSplit’s announcement highlighted four changes. It also mentioned bug fixes and improvements, but did not enumerate them.
- Layout Wizard: A guided way to put together a starting scene with a camera, another source, and a background.
- Refreshed Sources menu: The menu for adding scene sources received an overhaul.
- Customizable lower thirds: Users could start from templates and customize lower thirds with a few clicks.
- Customizable background source: Users could select an image or add their own. XSplit said this source prevents other sources from appearing behind the background.
Describing the background change, XSplit/SplitmediaLabs Limited wrote: “Using a background source now means you never have to worry about any other sources going behind your background!”
How do I build a first scene?
A scene is a collection of sources arranged in one layout. Use the wizard for a quick guided setup, or add and position sources yourself when you want more control. These are general Broadcaster workflows documented in XSplit’s getting-started guide; they should not be read as controls exclusive to version 4.3.

Guided setup with Layout Wizard
- Open Layout Wizard from the welcome screen, the top-bar button, or Tools > Layout Wizard.
- Choose a layout.
- Select sources from the source drop-downs.
- Finish the wizard to create the scene.
Manual setup with Add Source
- Click Add Source.
- Choose a source type.
- Resize and arrange the source on the canvas.
To manage scenes, use the Scene buttons to switch between them. Right-click a Scene button to rename it. A camera is optional; add one only if it suits the scene you are building.
Set the canvas
The getting-started guide says you can set the canvas resolution and frame rate before streaming or recording. Those canvas settings become the default basis for the stream or recording settings, so set them to suit your intended output before going live.

How do I use lower thirds and the background source?
In the 4.3 announcement, XSplit says lower thirds can be added from templates and customized, and that the background source can use an image or one you provide. The announcement does not give exact menu paths or controls for either feature. Avoid relying on guessed instructions: check the documentation or release notes for the exact Broadcaster version installed, because current menus may differ from 4.3.
How do I stream or record?
Start a stream
- Click Stream to open the Plugin Store dialog.
- Select a platform and follow its setup wizard to authenticate.
- Choose the desired channel in the Outputs drop-down.
- Click Stream again to start. Some platforms display a pre-stream dialog before broadcasting begins.
Record a video
- Confirm which canvas the Record button will capture.
- Click Record.
For current platform-specific setup details, use the version-matched documentation rather than assuming the 4.3 workflow has unchanged labels.

What should I know about compatibility and licensing?
XSplit’s FAQ is dated 2022, so its operating-system and license statements are historical guidance, not a guarantee of current requirements or terms. Check the current requirements and licensing information before installing or choosing a plan.
- The 2022 FAQ described Broadcaster as supporting Windows 7 and higher and said there were no plans for a macOS version on that page. It also warned that Boot Camp users might encounter issues. Verify current system requirements before relying on those statements.
- The same FAQ said the free license added a watermark, prohibited commercial use, limited presentations to four scenes, and did not allow simultaneous broadcasting to multiple platforms. It listed Audio Source, Local Streaming, Stream Delay, Source Transitions, Projector, Preview Editor, Audio Mix Preview, and Skype Video Camera among features omitted from the free license. It said a Premium or Premium Bundle license removed the watermark. These are dated terms; confirm current licensing details with XSplit.
- The FAQ said Broadcaster 4.2 and later supported VST3 plugins, while warning that compatibility varied. Its 2022 list of plugins reported to work included RoughRider3, BX CleanSweep V2, MJUCjr, SPL De-Verb Plus, TDR Nova, Valhalla Supermassive, and TAL-Reverb 4. Treat that list as historical, not a current compatibility promise.
