Choose OBS Studio if you want Linux support, an open-source app and deep control through plugins and scripts. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want built-in overlays, alerts, widgets and an integrated creator-tools workflow. Neither is the universal winner: the better fit depends on your operating system, preferred setup and whether Streamlabs’ bundled tools are worth paying for.
How OBS and Streamlabs Desktop differ
They share a technical foundation, but they are not the same application. Streamlabs says its Desktop app is built on the OBS engine. OBS Studio offers a configurable environment for scenes, sources, audio and extensions; Streamlabs Desktop packages that engine with Streamlabs’ interface and creator tools.
That distinction matters: compare the workflows and included tools, not just the underlying streaming engine. Neither vendor’s documentation establishes a universal performance or ease-of-use winner.

Which software should you use?
Choose OBS Studio for Linux or a modular setup
- You use Linux: OBS lists Linux support, while Streamlabs’ current FAQ download details list Windows and macOS.
- You want free, open-source software and are comfortable assembling a workflow with scenes, sources, plugins or scripts.
- You value control over the interface through configurable docks, hotkeys and Studio Mode.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop for bundled creator tools
- You want overlays, alerts and widgets available as part of an integrated workflow rather than building out the setup from separate extensions.
- You prefer Streamlabs’ onboarding and account ecosystem. Whether it feels easier is personal; the available documentation does not establish that it is faster for every user.
- You have a specific need for Ultra-only benefits, such as multistreaming or premium overlays, and have checked the current price and plan details.
Compare the free options before paying
Both products have a free route: OBS is described as free and open source, and Streamlabs offers free Desktop tools. Start with the free version that fits your operating system and workflow. Consider Ultra only if its current paid benefits solve a need that OBS or Streamlabs’ free tools do not.

Will one use less CPU or run better on your PC?
There is no established controlled head-to-head benchmark here that shows one application consistently uses less CPU or performs better. Load depends on the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, capture sources and computer configuration. A simple scene and a demanding scene can produce very different results in the same app.
OBS says its hardware needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity, and warns that compatibility does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. Streamlabs’ published recommendations are vendor guidance, not a promise of performance. Compare the same game, scene, output settings and encoder on your own PC if performance is decisive; watch for dropped frames, encoder overload and gameplay impact rather than relying on an unsupported general CPU ranking.

Check operating-system and hardware requirements
OBS Studio
The current OBS product page lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13+ and Linux. Its system-requirements article explains that actual capability depends on encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. Treat the product page as the current platform reference and the requirements article as a configuration caveat.
Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ FAQ download details list Windows 10+ and macOS 12+. Its requirements article recommends at least 8 GB RAM and gives a higher-end recommended configuration for demanding scenes: 16 GB or more RAM, an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, specified GPU families, a 512 GB SSD and Ethernet. These are Streamlabs’ recommendations, not guaranteed performance thresholds.

Streamlabs’ requirements page has inconsistent macOS wording: it lists macOS 12+ as a minimum but also says 10.15+ in a recommended macOS line. Use the more conservative macOS 12+ figure from the FAQ and check the live download page before installing. For either app, having a compatible system does not ensure that a particular game, scene and output setting will run smoothly.
A practical way to make the decision
- Check your operating system. If you use Linux, OBS is the documented fit among these two. On Windows or Mac, continue comparing workflow.
- List the tools you need. If you need overlays, alerts and widgets together, try Streamlabs’ free Desktop tools. If you want to choose and configure extensions yourself, start with OBS.
- Try a representative scene. Add the game or capture source, microphone, overlays and output settings you expect to use. Check stream stability and gameplay impact on your own hardware.
- Review paid requirements. If an Ultra benefit is the reason you lean toward Streamlabs, confirm the current plan price and inclusions. The FAQ’s $27/month or $189/year billed annually figure was listed when checked in 2026 and may change.
- Choose based on friction, not assumptions. Keep the app whose setup and ongoing controls suit you; documentation cannot determine which interface you will personally find easier.
