The desktop’s total depends on its purchase price, measured power use, local electricity tariff and maintenance; the VM’s total depends on compute, storage, network transfer and any extra encoding resources. Compare complete costs for the same stream settings and period—not a PC’s sticker price against a VM’s headline hourly rate.
What determines the cost of a 24/7 YouTube stream?
The largest recurring cost difference often comes down to where the work runs and how much data the stream sends. A home desktop uses electricity and depends on your power and internet connection. A cloud VM avoids running the encoder at home, but continuous outbound traffic can reach multiple terabytes per month and may be billed separately.
First choose the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not minimum hardware specifications. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Estimate continuous data use
At a constant bitrate, the approximate data sent in 30 days is bitrate in bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds, divided by 8. This gives about 0.97 decimal TB at 3 Mbps and 2.59 decimal TB at 8 Mbps. These are calculations, not published measurements, and exclude protocol overhead; actual usage may be higher.

For a VM, check the selected provider’s current transfer allowance and overage price for the specific India region. Confirm whether outbound traffic is included, metered, or subject to a regional allowance. A compute price alone is not the cloud bill.

Neither the desktop purchase price nor the VM’s advertised compute rate establishes which is cheaper. Google Cloud, for example, lists Mumbai and Delhi regions and prices by machine type and region; a complete stream-specific estimate still needs the VM configuration and network charges. Calculate the desktop’s monthly equivalent
Separate the first-month cash outlay from the ongoing cost. For an ownership-period comparison, estimate the desktop’s monthly equivalent as:

(Purchase price − expected resale value) ÷ planned ownership months + electricity + maintenance or replacement parts.
Estimate electricity from measured draw
- Measure average power in watts while the computer is doing the actual encoding and looping workload. A general idle reading may not represent continuous streaming.
- Calculate monthly energy: average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 = kWh per 30-day month.
- Apply your utility’s applicable marginal tariff and bill adjustments to those kWh. Add likely maintenance and replacement costs separately.
India does not have one household electricity rate applicable to every creator. Retail tariffs are set by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state subsidies can affect domestic bills. Rates may depend on the state, utility, consumer category and consumption slab. Use the current schedule for your own connection rather than an India-wide average. Estimate the actual running hours for your billing period, then add each charge that applies:

- Disk or other storage needed for the operating system, encoder and source files.
- Public IP charges, if applicable.
- Outbound transfer at the regional egress rate, after any included allowance.
- GPU, accelerator or managed media-processing costs if the workload requires them.
- Applicable taxes and the provider’s billing terms.
Use the stream bitrate to estimate data volume, then price that volume against the provider’s current regional network terms. Do not assume a generic transfer allowance applies to a Mumbai or Delhi configuration. Verify availability, quotas and current rates directly before committing.
Compare the same workload, not unlike headline prices
A fair comparison uses the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, source-loop behavior and uptime assumption. Set the same ownership horizon for the desktop and billing period for the VM. Include the desktop’s initial cash requirement separately from its amortized monthly figure; include all relevant VM transfer and ancillary charges in its total.

Also compare non-price factors that affect the value of the setup: encoding capacity, local electricity and internet reliability, recovery after interruptions, and how much administration you are willing to do. A machine that can play a file in a test is not thereby proven to encode your chosen feed continuously. Likewise, a VM description alone does not establish recovery from an encoder crash or network interruption. Test reconnect and recovery behavior on the actual setup.

Use a worksheet before choosing
- Stream: resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, loop or playlist behavior, and hours per month.
- Desktop: current purchase price, expected resale value, ownership months, measured average watts under the intended workload, local tariff and likely maintenance.
- Cloud: provider and India region, VM type and hourly rate, hours running, storage, public IP if charged, monthly data sent, included transfer, egress rate and any encoding add-ons.
- Operations: who monitors the stream, restarts the encoder or machine, and restores service after power, network or software failures.
Recalculate when a bitrate, provider, tariff or VM region changes. Without a current refurbished listing, a specified utility tariff and a dated all-in cloud quote, a numeric break-even would be misleading.
Keep YouTube’s stream requirements in view
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) in its encoder settings guidance. Test before going live and monitor stream health. These are ingestion settings; they do not specify which desktop or VM size will sustain a particular encode.
To connect an encoder, YouTube’s setup process uses the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a screenshot, log or public configuration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive note is not a guarantee that a 24-hour broadcast or encoder will remain healthy and available.
